Anyone want Scherzer before I cut him?
-
If I were a Mets fan, my worry would be when (or if) Degrom and Scherzer will be back. There is nothing substantial in the news about Degrom, and we don’t have anything firm on Scherzer. Meanwhile, Carasco is 35 and Bassit is 33, and both have serious injury histories.
-
I think they'll be fine. Bassitt, Carrasco, Williams, Walker isn't a great rotation, but I think it's good enough to keep them at around .500 ball until they get the big guys back.
-
One would think their pitching staff is in shambles, but their lineup is so much more deep and balanced this year. Even if they play .400 ball over the next 6 weeks they still might hold on to the division lead, or close to it.
-
Now Scherzer! Mets have started so strongly, but without Scherzer, Megill or Degrom, they could be in a bind.
-
E-Rod… another example of why teams shouldn’t throw long-term $$$ at pitchers. I remember Sox fans bitching about getting out-spent by Detroit for E-Rod, but that $77M contract looks risky now.
-
At least he didn't walk any batters??

That’s like a video game pitching line. 1.2 IP and 5 HRs! I hope Chaim Bloom is gearing up to sell and start prepping for 2024.
-
Bonus fun fact: Detmers had less positive points in his no hitter than Eovaldi just got negative.
-
I am in 5 fantasy leagues. I have Eovaldi in 4 of them.
-
I had to go look figuring I'd get to say my record was worse. Seth Lugo hung a -57 on me one time. I don't think Lugo completed an inning so ppg was worse (if memory serves) but you win the total negative points. Congratulations ??
-
In all my years of Ottoneu thats the most negative points I've ever gotten from a pitcher in one start... yikes.
-
That was the most Reds thing they could possibly do.
-
Reds threw a no hitter, but still managed to lose. Cincinnati is a train wreck.
-
Haha, you are right!
-
Phillies are suffering from Dombrowski already. They signed 2 DHes (Castellanos and Schwarber) with 2 DHes already there (Bohm and Hoskins), and now they need to use Harper at DH all year. I’ll predict DD will trade the farm for Nelson Cruz and Josh Bell… maybe an entire roster of DHes. Phillies…
-
Who wants to act first to add pieces for your title run? I have Muncy, Bellinger, Bullpen, and other options available.
-
Yeah it's been a good tight race the first month here. Offense is down a good bit so far, wonder how much it is the balls or how much it is the miserable weather. Probably numerous factors.

Personally, I have No comprehension of how you did this but my rates are in need of marked improvement so end result seems about right
-
I adjusted standings by equalizing games and innings using 5ppg and 5.5ppi. The format looked much better typed, but I think you can see the results correctly.

We also have finally had some nice weather in Chicago yesterday. April and the first part of May has sucked. High 70's through Friday, definite Tennis weather.
-
Today was the first day this year that has actually felt warm. It has been freezing, wet and windy up here all year. Finally in the 70s!

MLB offered Bauer up to the mob because of his political views and outspokenness. I’ll not believe otherwise unless new information comes out that justifies the extreme difference between how MLB treated Bauer and how they treated Chapman, German, Urias, Mateo, Russell, Familia, Osuna, Herrera, Torres, Olivera, Cordero.
-
In DV situations, the victim often has financial motives to refuse to cooperate with police. If Chapman’s wife pushed for prosecution, she would have hurt her own bank account. But they could have charged Chapman with firearms crimes. If I shoot up my garage, I guarantee I’ll be in prison - even if I don’t choke my wife first. But MLB ignored the massive firearms problem and was lenient on Chapman because… reasons. They could have banned him for life, or imposed a 2 year suspension. But nope.
-
Yeah, ideally things would be more objective. Like the drug policy, players aren’t suspended over mere allegations of PED’s. There has to be compelling evidence (failed tests) to suspend someone under that policy. Which would again make me think there could be good evidence we don’t yet know about. Which could also beg the question why no charges in court then? I wouldn’t think MLB has evidence law enforcement doesn’t. Unfortunately the nature of domestic issues is just different and more messy.
-
I agree. And I also think MLB has been so inconsistent that they should be prevented from this kind of arbitrary treatment. Aroldis choked his wife and shot 8 rounds into his wall to scare the hell out of her, and MLB decided he isnt even 25% as bad as Bauer. It’s not like Chapman was a 19th century case - it was recent. What really changed since then? Nothing.
-
I’d personally prefer they not get involved in that. Not a big fan of cancel culture and don’t think someone should be destroyed and their livelihood severely hindered over mere allegations. To Onk’s point I would hope an employer would have very compelling evidence of wrongdoing or a violation of the agreement before firing someone or suspending them for years. Could be a slippery slope if they’re not consistent with their process.
-
Should employers investigate all allegations of non-work activity, or just when females allege players abused them?
-
But whether or not they SHOULD be involved in that or whether or not it's a good agreement/policy is definitely a good question. It does seem like something the legal system is designed to handle so not sure there needs to be some sort of "supplemental" punishment by employers on top of handling it through the courts and justice system. It probably is more for optics than anything I would think. Not sure how many would be offenders stopped short of abuse because they thought about the
-
Yeah my employment is at will and am not nor have I ever been part of a union so I'm really not sure how that typically works. But am pretty sure the MLB's domestic violence policy was part of the CBA that MLB and MLBPA agreed upon (2015 I think) and is why they are handling it the way they are. So if I was employed by someone and had a union representing me negotiating such a policy I guess I would be subject to it and expect it to be enforced in that sense.
-
Is a person’s employer responsible for punishing allegations of domestic abuse? Especially when there is no civil or criminal finding he did anything that is either a crime or a tort? How many of our employers would conduct their own investigation of allegations against us from outside our jobs, even when no court is taking any action? And if your employer decided you were a domestic abuser, would they suspend you but NOT fire you? They want you back in 2 years, because why?
-
Has the MLBPA defended Bauer? I haven’t heard much about that and it seems he’s been left to fight this on his own.
-
You might be right Spa. There's a lot here that doesn't add up which makes it a frustrating situation to try and make sense of.
-
Let’s go Yankees!!! Totally not a problem to have Domingo German and Aroldis Chapman back in action! Let’s cheer them on and root for a title! Trevor Bauer? He is a disgusting abuser - he needs to be suspended for 2 seasons after his 1 season paid suspension. That guy is somehow worse than German and Chapman, at least according to MLB. Of course they won’t say why, but you know MLB would never be full of shit, so we can totally trust them. Go Yanks!
-
Apparently the alleged assault was NOT bad enough for a lifetime ban. I wonder how bad an assault needs to be to merit a total ban. If MLB truly believes the allegations, they must have decided a player can beat a woman up and still return to the game - just a matter how how long a timeout is needed.
-
I think there is likely some damning evidence against Bauer that MLB has but isn’t available for public consumption, and they’re not waiting for TMZ to get a hold of it and release it creating a shit storm like the NFL had with Ray Rice after they only suspended him for 2 games (iirc?) though having possession of the footage. Isn’t that botch job basically the reason Goodell still gets booed at the draft?
-
But again we really have no idea what went down or what he said/she said or what he actually did so I guess it really doesn't matter much. I could be contending about a situation that didn't actually happen at all, just what she had claimed happened. I doubt we're changing any minds and think it's ok if we simply disagree and I can appreciate having a discussion about things that are disagreeable and yet still keep things civil.
-
I've trained some with a very skilled kickboxer and consented to sparring but always would tell him if I was overwhelmed or it got to be too much and he would tone it down a bit or back off. My opinion is if I consent to that and he knocks me out he doesn't just have the right to keep doing what he wants with my body (even though he has the ability to, doesn't mean he should) because I initially consented to something that had risks.
-
I agree MMA is far bigger than UFC events, just like baseball is bigger than MLB. But I still maintain even in a training environment if a stronger and more skilled opponent overwhelms and knocks out or chokes someone unconscious they don't necessarily have the right to keep doing what they want to their body just because they initially consented to the training. The harsh reality is that could be a consequence in mutually consenting to combat but doesn't necessarily make right.
-
And Buxton, I think you are wrong about MMA being a “false equivalency”. MMA is far, far bigger than state-sanctioned UFC events. I know a LOT of people who go to MMA gyms just for personal training. They constantly fight each other - no state-sanctioning, no doctors around, just guys in local gyms all over the country. MMA isn’t just a public sport, it is a daily part of life for many people. They consent to being hit, and they sometimes get injured. But they have consented to it.
-
Why is an MMA match not an assault? The only reason is consent. Why is having sex with your wife not a sexual assault? Consent. I know the world does not care what any of us thinks…. But I hate what MLB is doing. And I don’t believe for a damn minute they really care at all about the alleged “victim”. MLB is sacrificing Bauer to the mob, largely because he is an awkward personality who people enjoy hating.
-
I'm not even talking about his suspension or whether he deserves all this from MLB, I guess I'm just more concerned with the ethics/moral side of the issue & don't think an invitation or initial consent to do certain things to another person justifies you doing all of those things to them just because you claim "they asked for it". I personally am surprised they handed out 2 years when there were no criminal charges & when other players have also allegedly done some pre
-
In my analogy of a teenager requesting to be hit, I would argue it doesn't make it ok for me to do it and to continue to do it simply because he initially consented to it. There are still laws against that type of behavior. But like I did clearly mention he wasn't criminally charged and we do not know it happened like she said it did, these are just "what ifs" and speculation. I'm simply contending if what she said is all true I do think he should have consequences, but we likely won't
-
If someone says they would gain more pleasure from being stabbed or shot would that be ok? I assume we would agree not. We likely recognize a line is to be drawn somewhere and the disagreement and varying opinions likely revolve on where that is. But someone simply consenting to or requesting a behavior or action be done to them does not mean it is ok for the other person to do it necessarily.
-
I disagree that I'm brushing anything off. I don't see how someone can consent to something and even though it would generally be assault that makes it ok. That is a false equivalency to compare it to an MMA fight, their bedroom behavior was likely not sanctioned by the California state athletic commission. Also not sure how you can continue to consent to something once you are unconscious? Sometimes I like to argue a point to absurdity to show the logical conclusion of the thought process.
-
But you are brushing off the main point… the “something” is NOT illegal on it’s own, as you said. Consent is the key point on the question whether Bauer did anything wrong. MMA fights involve violence, but the fighters have accepted it and consented to being brutally hit. There was no crime, and the punishment is so far out of line with the allegations it can’t be allowed to stand. Bauer is losing tens of millions of $, and I can’t even see a misdemeanor!
-
But again this all seems like it has to be hypothetical since we don't know what's true & what the lies are. It's also of note he wasn't criminally charged which is interesting. She could have been injured in a different way or by herself & tried to capitalize on the situation, who really knows? I think it was an Athletic article last year that laid things out pretty well, had sources stating what was in some of the texts back and forth between them and definitely seemed like a w
-
Even if someone initially consents to something but that something is illegal there probably should be some consequence for it. Like just because she may like it rough doesn't necessarily mean it's ok to hit her in the face. Just because someone says to do it doesn't mean you should do it or that it's ok to do. If a 15 year old smart-mouth challenges me to hit him that doesn't mean it's ok for me to hit him since there's laws against that. I couldn't just claimed he consented if I continued to.
-
I think it's very likely we as the public will never know what truly happened and can only speculate with the info we hear from all sides, which is often the case with these types of allegations/issues. IF it's true what she said that he choked her unconscious with her own hair and hit her in the face several times and continued to have his way with her unconscious body I definitely think that is wrong, but that's a big "IF" since we really don't know if it happened that way.
