I'm very much against the last week of the NBA being part of the season- in my Fantrax league the top two teams were scrambling to get Lakers backups and players that haven't played more than 5 minutes a game all season. It all came down to who could pick up players the quickest that wouldn't be anywhere near a roster in the championship. I'm hoping Niv does something to address that and the weeks surrounding the All Star break, but even if they are not addressed I would be adamantly against any revision in which the last week of the NBA season comes into play and really even the second to last week if that's an option.
Rick Fox's Perm at Apr 12, 2022 8:20 AM -
With 4 teams, it allows for playing each team twice and ending before the final week. Although the two short weeks around the all star break were necessary to make that work, and I didn't really like that part.
I absolutely don't think the final NBA week should be played, especially for the championship. It's total garbage.
I would be down for 6 if it meant the all star break was one slightly longer matchup (not sure this is even on the table), we played all but two teams twice, and we end a week prior to the NBA's final week of shenanigans. Otherwise I vote to keep it the same.
Bob Loblaw at Apr 12, 2022 7:57 AM -
I’d like to see 6. With Yahoo you can set your final week to be the second-to-last week. Is that not possible here?
All Shooters at Apr 12, 2022 5:46 AM -
I would lean towards 4 teams (to avoid the last week) - based on what I’ve heard about other leagues, the last week was a mess.
While I understand that injuries and depth are a part of the game, the last week is more unpredictable than typical injuries, especially when players sit out with little advance notice (which is particularly problematic for late games where substitutes might not be available).
I do agree that there are benefits to 6 teams too, as you’ve set out Kazaam, and I agree that the last week problems would affect all teams equally. If the league wants to move to 6 I’m fine with that, but my personal preference would be for 4.
Melon Ballerz at Apr 12, 2022 2:21 AM -
Also, I wanted to take everyone’s temperature on whether you prefer 4 or 6 playoff teams. I enjoyed 4, but think a case can be made for 6.
With 6, more teams will be involved in the playoff chase. I think that’s good for the league if more teams are competing: it’s more fun, and it maintains a more even competitive balance. At the trade deadline, there will be more buyers and relatively few sellers, which again I think is positive. And 6 incentivizes teams to push for one of the top two seeds, since they then receive a bye in the first round. I’ve been in Ottoneu leagues where after a couple years the top players are so concentrated on a few teams that all the other owners cycle in and out without much success. 6 playoff teams helps to ensure anyone can feel like they have a shot in a given year, which is good for the league as a whole.
The major downside for 6 is it would extend the playoffs into the very last week of the NBA season. As we saw, a lot of NBA teams sit their top guys for at least a game during the last week. That’s unfortunate, but it’s also a challenge that theoretically would affect both fantasy teams equally, and will reward teams that have built a deep enough bench to withstand top players being sat.
I lean toward 6 teams, but it’s not a strong preference. I only would change if we get a majority - at least seven owners - voting to increase the number of playoff teams. But I figured now was a good time to start the discussion - let me know what you think!
Kazaam at Apr 11, 2022 11:59 PM -
Hey everyone, congrats again on a fun first season. Wanted to cover a couple things. First, per the Ottoneu message boards it looks like there will be an additional UTIL spot in the lineup next year. Looks like this will be implemented across all leagues so just fyi.

Sorry, been away all day. Totally down with that solution.
All Shooters at Apr 9, 2022 3:53 PM -
You're right - it would be $1 more than second valid bid price. Treat it same way as regular auction
Kazaam at Apr 9, 2022 1:54 PM -
Would it be the first valid bid price, or $1 more than the second valid bid price? Hopefully not something we have to deal with.
Brandon Clay All Stars at Apr 9, 2022 1:53 PM -
That's an interesting solution, thanks.
Brandon Clay All Stars at Apr 9, 2022 1:50 PM -
I like that
Bob Loblaw at Apr 9, 2022 1:49 PM -
Gotcha. I see. Hopefully we don't have to deal with something like that but I think the easiest thing to do in that case would be go down the Auction results, and deliver the player to the first team who bid at a price that they could make legal
Kazaam at Apr 9, 2022 1:48 PM -
I wasn't referring to starting auctions after our playoffs end. I was referring to going way over your cap right before the season ends and carrying an illegal roster into the offseason. Those are two different issues (although I don't think the former is a big issue).
Brandon Clay All Stars at Apr 9, 2022 1:45 PM -
Not sure I follow... If we make a rule going forward that you can't add a player after the season is over, my assumption is anyone who started an auction for one would be doing so accidentally, or forgetfully. What's the situation where it would be "preventing other teams from getting a good end of season deal"?
Kazaam at Apr 9, 2022 1:42 PM -
It's too late this season to agree on harsher penalties, but in the future I might like to see a penalty harsher than simply removing the addition from the roster. It's not really a penalty at all if your only goal is preventing other teams from getting a good end-of season deal.
Brandon Clay All Stars at Apr 9, 2022 1:38 PM -
Yes Rick, I think we're all in agreement that when the season ends midnight on April 10, every team's roster has to be legal according to their salary cap. If not, I'll remove the additions from their roster
Kazaam at Apr 9, 2022 1:31 PM -
Perfectly said. Hoping everyone else agrees.
Bob Loblaw at Apr 9, 2022 1:29 PM -
I believe what is fair is that your team should be legal as of April 10 midnight regardless of loans and what not. Otherwise what’s to stop someone from blowing past their cap right now? I could bid whatever on Harden and Capella and not worry about cap since the season is over.
Rick Fox's Perm at Apr 9, 2022 1:00 PM -
Hey everyone, if we want to make a rule that stops roster moves after the last day of the playoffs next year that’s fine with me.
I’m not going to reverse any moves - as Ehlo says, we’ve all seen the season’s end date posted at the top of the league page all year. If teams had raised their concerns within a day or two of the season ending it’s something we could’ve discussed, but too many teams have made too many moves by now - it won’t be fair to reverse unless it’s something we have a clear majority of teams chiming in to agree to.
My preference as commissioner is always going to be to not make a bunch of unilateral rules or impose extra restrictions on top of Niv’s rulebook. But if it’s a rule being suggested on the message board and supported by the majority of the league, obviously I’m happy to enforce. Sorry if some folks feel burned by how this last week has played out, but it’s a simple process for us to work out rules that fix issues going forward. I enjoy this league’s activity level and message board participation, and I’m sure we can continue to solve any problems as they crop up.
Kazaam at Apr 9, 2022 12:08 PM -
Loans are by definition a tool to facilitate swaps of present value for future value. When present value goes to zero for everyone (because the season is over), it makes no sense for loans to exist, whether or not their continued existence promotes an outcome you prefer (i.e., making sellers think twice about doing big loan deals at the deadline).
Trust the Process at Apr 9, 2022 11:55 AM -
Yeah, to reiterate your point, Bob, I think people should bid on these auctions in such a way that they can make their rosters legal before the season ends, even though there is functionally no penalty at this point for carrying an illegal roster.
As far as next year, y'all can ask Niv for a change, but i don't think it's critical. The current system should inform the trade decisions that are made during the season. I thought the selling was a little heavy, personally. The playoff teams were stacked.
Brandon Clay All Stars at Apr 9, 2022 11:25 AM -
Wow, my math was off earlier. I had those most recent auctions ending on the 11th rather than late on the 10th. My bad. Niv did confirm how it works, and you indeed cannot start a new auction today.
I was thinking there was a loophole that allowed me to bid more than I have but then be okay because the rosters would've reset before the auction ended. This is not the case.
However, on the shady front, are we all agreed that it would not be cool for people to bid on players they can't afford in anticipation of the roster reset freeing up the cap space? In other words, I should NOT go for Capella knowing I'm about to get $81 back, right? Just trying to be fair and transparent. I'd he pissed if I held off on doing that in the spirit of the game just to find someone else doing it because they technically could.
Bob Loblaw at Apr 9, 2022 11:07 AM -
I think there are two questions, one about what should be done this year and one about what should be done going forward. As far as this year, I would love to reverse all moves that happened post Sunday 4/3 but I agree with Ehlo's point that the 4/10 season end date has been displayed for a while. It's possible at least some people have been making roster decisions with this in mind, so I'd be inclined to let these moves play out. However, I think we should all agree that nobody can start any new auctions from this point, because they would not be completed until after the season end date of 4/10. I also think nobody should be allowed to make a waiver claim that would process after Sun 4/10 11:59pm ET.
As far as the system / implications for next year, I completely agree with CG's points. I don't see how anyone can say this is not a massive advantage for teams that took on big loans to compete this year. In a properly functioning league, there is a trade-off involved in employing this strategy: you're sacrificing future value in exchange for present value. If auctions are still happening after the playoffs are over, all the teams that were buyers at the deadline now have huge team salaries and plenty of high-cost non-keepers they can cut (since they no longer have to worry about winning games) in exchange for lower-cost stars who have just been cut. In this system, there is effectively no trade-off for going all-in at the deadline - if you take on a big loan at the deadline, you win now AND you win later. I think next season, if there is no fix from Niv, we definitely need to have a rule that all transactions end on the final day of the playoffs.
Trust the Process at Apr 9, 2022 11:02 AM -
The season end date has been displayed on the league page for a while now. I would have been slightly annoyed if the commish had locked rosters before this date, although it wouldn't be much of a functional difference for my roster. I don't think anyone is at a disadvantage here. I think Niv originally had the 4-team playoff leagues finishing playoffs at the same time as the 8-team playoff leagues, but he moved it forward a week for the sake of having a much-more-desirable 22-week regular season.
Also, what "loophole" are people talking about?
Brandon Clay All Stars at Apr 9, 2022 10:13 AM -
good point, i agree the system is clearly broken, and i know other leagues are still going on. this is an oversight by niv i would hope.
and yes, can't really blame teams for participating in it when you are at a disadvantage if you don't. however the commish can reverse any moves that are made. we could have agreed as a league no pickups / cuts after last sunday and if anyone accidentally or intentionally broke the rule it would not be hard for the commish to reverse the transactions. a good commissioner i think would have realized this and implemented something to oppose these transactions (that i think we can all agree are ridiculous and ruin / make the league worse not better).
anyway, that is for you guys to decide. it just really sucks for the teams who tried to rebuild and traded their stars along with huge loans for mediocre prospects. who would have been much better just cutting their star players, getting the cap space and then take advantage of all these stupid post season discount deals on top players. the system seems so obviously broken to me.
Fox Force Five at Apr 9, 2022 9:51 AM -
Nothing wrong with the commish participating in the transactions. He’s in the same spot as every other owner - either you participate, or you choose not to participate and watch everyone else grab the discounts. The problem is the one-size-fits-all season end date that applies even to leagues that finish earlier. It’s unfortunate but I trust it can be fixed for next season. I don’t think blaming the commish helps. I agree that locking rosters after last Sunday would have been a good idea, but I don’t know that that’s even possible.
Trust the Process at Apr 9, 2022 9:42 AM -
this is crazy that people are making pickups and cuts after our league effectively ended a week ago, and now there's a loophole with the cap. can't blame managers for taking advantage of this but it's ridiculous not only that the commissioner hasn't locked all transactions since last sunday but that he's actually participating in these transactions.
after all this is the same guy that tried to impose a rule saying that teams can have infinite cap, players and illegal rosters heading into the off season lol. sorry guys but this league is broken. i know it was nivs first year doing basketball but there are a lot of things that need to be cleaned up in this format. GL everyone, thanks for a for a mostly fun first season of ottoneu basketball.
Fox Force Five at Apr 9, 2022 9:27 AM -
The season ends at the end of April 10th. Looks like all current auctions were started more than 48 hours before this. The system will block you from starting an auction now that we are within 48 hours of the season's end. If it does not, it's an error. As of now, it looks like everything is operating normally, although I agree that teams should try to maintain legal rosters. I should note that auctions were blocked for a time yesterday, but Niv pushed a fix for this. There was a forum post.
Brandon Clay All Stars at Apr 9, 2022 8:45 AM -
There seems to be a loophole with acquiring players at the end of the season. For any players having an auction start as of 4/9, the auction will end after roster penalties and loans get removed on 4/11, thus freeing up space a team wouldn't normally have.
I emailed Niv about this but haven't heard back yet. I suggested that players should remain at full price even after waivers once the playoffs start. I also think auctions shouldn't be allowed to start if they won't finish before the rosters reset. As discussed before, I think we all agree a team should be required to be in a legal state after any pickups, and I think that should be within a team's current budget. But this loophole allows otherwise, and I certainly don't want to miss out if others are taking advantage.
I don't think anything can change for this year, and I'm interested to see what happens with all the current auctions. It is what it is, good or bad. Curious to hear other thoughts from the league.
