Reminder to discuss salary cap ideas. Hard cap? Soft cap? What are the penalties? Senor Smoke has presented one idea, but now is the time to discuss what type of cap rules we want.
Thanks
-
I hadn’t thought it through that far, but that does sound like the cleanest, most simple way to do it.
-
This isn’t me endorsing the idea, I’ll do what league wants, but this idea can work logistically at least for draft period. I can control what every team’s salary cap is in Couchmanagers.
I’m assuming in this example, you can only draft $375, but after than can acquire players to increase cap? But would have those penalties if you end season over cap?
-
On the cap, I agree that the changes to the MiLB rosters/draft make it so using picks as penalties doesn't make as much sense anymore. This might be an extreme idea, but how penalties that impact a team's starting salary the next season? So maybe like 25% of your overage gets reduced from the standard $400 starting point. Basically, if you end 2025 with a $500 salary, you're starting 2026 with only $375 to spend instead of $400. Not sure how that would be implemented/what's possible.
-
Fine by me!
-
I think that’s a good compromise. It’s just easier to keep everything on MiLB unable to be drafted, but if teams agree that they’ll trade/acquire a player that will be on MLB team with a salary rather than MiLB team. That’s fine. I think! Haha
-
I vote for no trading of guys on minor league rosters, but we could leave open the possibility to promote a guy to your main roster, even if he hasn't debuted, and then deal him. The acquiring team has to be willing to add that player directly to their active roster. I'm thinking this would benefit rebuilding teams trying to acquire more younger/cheaper talent (as opposed to completely "locking" these MiLB guys up from trades), but perhaps I haven't thought it all the way through.
-
To be fair, in defense of Abe's point, in this example, if both owners have room on their MiLB roster to do that, why is that not clean? If in that instance, I'm giving him someone I don't value as much, but he does and he has room for it and wants to trade me an MLB asset in return, isn't that the point of a lot of our trades, that is to get younger/cheaper or a more established/known commodity?

At this point I'll leave it as no trades - picks or players - to keep it clean and also avoid any exposing of loopholes (draft this guy for me and I'll trade you someone). I'm open to discussing it, but that is my thought as of now.
-
I think people should be able to trade MiLB players if they have/make space on their 5 man roster. I don't think people should be able to trade picks though.
-
CONFIRMING - no trading of draft picks OR players
-
It was my thought that MiLB rosters would then be static/untradeable if picks are also untradeable. Would want to clarify that among the league.
-
Now we can move on to salary cap. And because we have a MiLB Draft in place still, we can consider a "soft cap" in which penalty is draft picks.
My only question with that wrinkle, if I have a full 5-man roster, and don't intend on promoting/cutting any, if the punishment is losing draft picks, I wouldn't have any open draft picks to begin with.
Let's discuss!
-
Let's consider the MiLB proposal complete.
5 man rosters
No trades of picks (players ok?)
2025 draft as-is. Must cut down to 5 players via trades/promotions/cuts before MLB draft. All those cut will be available to be drafted during MLB draft and auctioned during season
2026 draft and beyond will remain as-is. 2026 with trades as they are, but no more trading of picks.
MLB DRAFTEES ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BE AUCTIONED DURING SEASON, WILL BE FIRST AVAILBLE DURIN
-
No qualms on my end!
-
That timeline would make sense to me.

Proposed timeline would look like this then:
1/31 - Keeper deadline for MLB and MiLB. We'd abide by old rules that you can draft up to 15.
Late February - MiLB 5 round draft
Post MiLB Draft - MiLB Roster cut down to 5 players. You can promote, keep or cut but before MLB draft begins, all MiLB rosters must have no more than 5 players on team.
MLB Draft - Regular slow draft, but the recently cut MiLB players would now be a part of the pool
Thoughts? Obje

My initial thought was to hold the draft as planned in 2025. You can make cuts before the draft to clear room, if need be. Then after the draft, and before the MLB draft, we will cut down our MiLB rosters to 5 by either promoting to Ottoneu MLB rosters or releasing to free agency.
We could cut down BEFORE the 2025 MiLB draft to have more MiLB players eligible. But either way, I see two different periods to make cuts, with the final cuts to 5 required after MiLB, before MLB
-
I would support lowering MiLB to 5, with a freeze on all pick/player trading, while still honoring all moves that involved any '26 picks. I think the biggest remaining question is then, when is the deadline for lowering the minors back to 5 per team
-
Open to keeping these if no one objects. But yes, no more draft picks
-
I think we will still need to honor trades that already happened with 2026 draft picks but have no more trading going forward.
-
I will leave the MiLB proposal up for debate the rest of this week. If you have any objections to that rule, please speak up. This rule is fluid, so I'll take ideas into consideration. But end of day Sunday the MiLB portion will be complete and we will move to the salary cap rule next week.
Thanks all
-
I will also get tallying the results of the prediction contest this week!
-
That makes it 6 votes to keep.
From what I've read, the easiest solution is to decrease rosters to a max of 5 and no trading picks.
My proposal would be to conduct the 2025 draft as it is with trades. 2026 and beyond will have no pick trading.
At the end of the 2025 draft, you will be required to reduce your roster to 5. You can either cut or promote. If you cut, they will go to Ottoneu Free agency and available to be drafted during MLB draft or auctioned d
-
Sorry for the late vote here, but I vote to KEEP the MiLB. I think reducing it to 5 players is key. Ideally no trading of draft picks. I think the MiLB does introduce unique/tough economics into ottoneu. Having such a large MiLB also makes it more difficult to get decent guys off the waiver wire in season. But I do like a simple MiLB system. Also downsizing MiLB would make it much easier to track in an excel spreadsheet than the current system.
-
If we're counting Ford's answer as a "Keep" then we are at 5-4 Keep, waiting on Zach and Abe.
But maybe the compromise is 2025 is last draft. And we run the course with the players we have until they are all promoted and don't replenish.
Or would people rather do the elimination in one fell swoop? I don't really want ANOTHER vote on this, so let's see how Zach and Abe vote and proceed from there.
Thanks for listening to my inner monologue.
-
That would need to be addressed for sure, because one option I’ve heard/thought of is eliminating it after 2025 draft. Hold the draft, promote who you want to MLB, and whoever is not promoted is a FA.
If we did it where you hold on to MiLB until they are promoted, that’s different than I was initially thinking.
-
To be clear, you’d still get to keep your present MiLB rosters. We just would cease drafting, adding in further years. So it would come to a natural end with everyone called up. Prospects would then be FA’s moving forward like all other players
-
I lean towards revising, but wouldn’t mind eliminating it if that’s done in phases or something
-
Vote to keep MiLB squads, with no trading of picks.
-
I'd vote to scrap it
-
I vote to scrap it
-
Waiting on a few more responses on the MiLB proposal
Completely Scrap
Keep with revisions
Thanks!
-
I’d also sunset any rule changes so they take effect after the 2025 season as trades and rosters have been constructed with other rules to allow time for adjustments needed with new rules
-
Keep system with changes. Super simplified, 5-man rosters, no trading picks or prospects would be my preference.
-
I vote to adjust in some way. Perhaps MiLB only transaction or no trading MiLB players or picks.
-
I would vote to tweak, and reduce the rosters down to 5 players.

I also understand drafts are super fun! So while scrapping the system is my preference, I’m good either way
-
Scrap the system. My rationale is that this is the way traditional ottoneu functions. Every team has the same access to prospects but there’s an obvious opportunity cost to acquiring them as a contending team. Might make it easier to rebuild/compete quicker from year to year.
-
I would vote to scrap the milb teams
-
Happy Black Friday- hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving and is deal shopping today!
Reminder to please vote on the fate of the MiLB system
Vote either to scrap the system in it’s entirety after 2025 draft (you’d be able to promote players, all others would be FA and we’d only have an MLB draft and roster)
Vote to keep the system, but with changes. And those changes would be discussed if this gets majority of votes.
6 votes wins.

Sorry y'all, I've been traveling all over.
I vote yes to a cap and like the tiered idea as well. I also vote yes to changing MiLB format because there are definitely some things I think we could clean up.

Regarding the cap, since we seem to be going that route, I think it should be set pretty high, like at least $550. Maybe it's a soft cap where if you go over it, then it becomes a hard cap the next year? idk just spitballing on possible variations
-
Of course, he's got good players to deal b/c he has a good team. Not trying to say you shouldn't take a deal that makes sense for your team. After all, the goal is for your team to win, not to prevent someone else from winning
YMMV, but Fangraphs' fantasy section posts Ottoneu specific articles fairly frequently. Doesn't deal with MiLB adjustments, but a lot of the lessons still apply
-
But what issues are we really trying to solve here? Maybe making a leap here, but if it's "Bryce keeps winning" and other managers want to break that cycle, then IMO the answer feels more like "be better" than "change the rules". Not trying to collude against him or encourage that, but if every year he trades for top picks and uses them to add salary early in the year, then it seems like maybe we should recognize that. He's figured out a strategy that works, so we n

While we wait for Zach to chime in, it's clear changes are wanted and will happen. So now it's just a matter of agreeing on those changes.
Once Zach has responded and we've all eaten our turkey dinner, we can come back on Friday to discuss the next steps on refining our bylaws.
Thank you all for participating. Enjoy the holiday with friends and family!

Late to voting so this is for the discussion.
I'm fine with reducing the size of MiLB rosters. The most anyone currently has is 12 and everyone could get down to 10. Reducing the size helps counteract some of the wonky economics introduced by MiLB rosters. Lukewarm on making picks untradeable
Pretty opposed to a hard cap. Soft cap only makes sense if there's a way to punish managers for going over. Can you go over it during the season but escape penalty as long as you'r
-
Just to throw my two cents in - I think a harder cap is intended to still allow teams to expand the cap but after reaching a certain threshold not being able to give and take loans. The idea is to still allow teams to trade once that threshold is reached but the money on both sides needs to be even.

Sorry! Missed that. Thanks!
