One last thing to help us keep the draft efficient tomorrow: when your draft budget allows it, please nominate a player with an appropriate starting bid. For example, starting Manny Machado or Noah Syndergaard at $1 is only drawing out the process needlessly for all of us.
-
Finally, Niv has been working hard to improve the draft software this year, and the early reports are promising that the system will run much smoother this year. That said, Niv has asked leagues to report any bugs so he can continue to improve the experience for other leagues. If you run into any issues with the draft software, let me know and I will pass along word to Niv after the draft.
-
Hey all, hope you're excited for the draft this weekend. A few things to keep in mind that will help the draft run smoothly: 1) Do your best to minimize down time during the draft - be ready when it's your turn to nominate, don't wait until clock runs all the way down to up the bid, etc. 2) Please avoid missing nominations. It is an unfair advantage and wastes everybody's time. Tolerance for multiple missed nominations will be much lower this year than in past drafts.
-
Weird. I took care of the issue. It looks like Niv has been alerted, so I doubt this will happen again.
-
It's not...some weird glitch happening in a bunch of leagues. Commish just needs to remove.

I don't remember making a claim on Brett Anderson, nor did I think it was legal right now... Lol
-
It's all good I was just asking because other leagues use it. I don't really have an issue keeping up with the messaging system on here either.

If only Paxton had surgery last week...

We don't currently have anything on Slack set up. My knowledge of Slack is pretty limited since I don't use it. It seems like the Ottoneu communication structures have worked pretty well for the league, but I'm open to exploring a different avenue if there is demand from other owners.
-
Hey all, does this league have a Slack workspace set up?
-
I can make a 18:00 EST draft, not any earlier would be appreciated.
-
Happy cut day! It's been an excellent, active offseason so far, so kudos to everybody. Let the draft prep begin.
-
LOL. Guy joined one of my other leagues and named his team Astro's Trash Can. On a related topic, he has now asked me to find a new owner because he took on too many teams. If anyone is interested in grabbing another team in a moderately competitive, but active, league, shoot me a direct message here. Thanks.

I'd like to applaud the league for (1) your restraint in not re-naming your team "The Banging Scheme" and (2) the volume of trades. Keep it up. Remember that after next week's keeper deadline, you cannot trade or cut players until the draft.
-
I went ahead and moved the draft back to 6pm on March 7. Remember the keeper deadline coming up at the end of the month. Only 22 days until pitchers and catchers report!
-
As I said, earlier is better for me. Maybe 6 pm EST is a good compromise. Also, I agree with everyone else...no problem with Funky staying in the league. Good luck with the internship!

Congrats! No problem from me, so long as you give us a heads up which bottom half of innings Miller Park plans to crank the fans blowing out from behind homeplate.

congrats Funky -- awesome news. I will now bid on every player you start an auction on.

Funky, congrats. I have no objection to you remaining in the league.
-
No problem from me Funky, Congrats, that is awesome!
-
I don't have a problem with it as long as the Brewers don't. In past leagues I have been in, when someone has gotten a job with a team, they had to stop participating in Ottoneu. Congrats on the gig!
-
Thanks for letting us know, Funky, and congrats! Sounds like you're living the dream. I personally don't have a problem with your setup.

Our challenge is we have a couple of owners in east Asia and an owner in Europe (I think), making our time windows that work pretty small. We could do 6pm Eastern time, which equates to 7am for east Asia and midnight for Meat, or possibly even 5pm if the owners in Asia are morning people. Thoughts on this, foreign-based owners?
-
Small update: I have recently accepted a summer internship in the front office of the Milwaukee Brewers. I thought I should mention this to all of you since I will have access to perhaps more advanced and proprietary data that the Brewers have. I wanted to volunteer this info because, while I don't think I will have any time to use their data to succeed in this league, if enough owners had a problem with it, I would step away from my team.

If we can move the time back (i.e. earlier) I would definitely appreciate it. 7 pm EST is 1 am for me. Even an hour would help.

OK, draft has been set for March 7 at 7pm Eastern Time (US). The main goal in scheduling was making sure every owner could attend, and this was the only date that worked for everybody. If the 7pm start time is a major problem for anybody, let me know. We do have a bit of flexibility with the start time. Let me know if you have any other concerns.
-
Thanks everybody for completing the Doodle poll. There was no date that worked for everybody, but March 6, 7, and 21 all had 10 of 12 owners available. I'll be reaching out to people who indicated they couldn't make it on those days to see if something could be worked out. I'll be back shortly with a determination on the date. In the meantime, does a 7pm Eastern US draft start time work for people?
-
Looking to move a contract. Mookie Betts, Gary Sanchez, or Trea Turner. Interested in a small package of young, affordable players.

FYI, I'm only using the time ranges in the Doodle poll to get a general sense of availability. We can definitely tweak the start time once we find a date that works. In the past, the draft has taken 2-3 hours to complete.
-
Time for the annual logistics exercise of scheduling our draft. The goal is to find a time where everybody can attend the draft, which is no small feat given the range of locales in this league. In the past, Friday/Saturday evenings (US time) have tended to work best, so I have created a Doodle poll to gauge everybody's availability: https://doodle.com/poll/xxuxmb57m5xh3bvg. Please respond to the poll by January 19 so we can get this thing on the calendar. DM me ASAP if none of those times work.

I dig the Bauer/Maeda challenge trade.
-
I'm going to put in a request with Niv to allow owners change your approve/veto vote within the 48-hour window. It's pretty annoying that we can't change our vote within the window. I accidentally clicked the wrong button on that vote, so there were actually only three legit veto votes on the Cole trade.
-
Totally understood Matata and valid point. I did all the math and understood the values and surpluses I was playing with and had a clear idea of two players I wanted out of the trade. The value is in Guelph's favor right now and for this season, but once these young flowers bloom, I think the value will turn in my favor and that was my goal. It fits my team's competitive window and my budget.
-
getting someone undervalued by $10 or something would be understandable in terms of giving up more total value.

yeah, i was wiling to change my vote but there was no option to do that. But still, you gave up two players who were overvalued compared to the average by $6, and you got back 3 players who were overvalued by $1.8. In getting you salary flexibility you didn't exactly get a lot of value. It's a long off-season and you didn't try other players?

Hopefully we can all move on and this isn't a sign of managers trying to micromanage other managers team goals and decisions. Vetoes are to provide a check against collusion not to show disagreement with a trade.
-
Also not cool that some managers taking exception to my trade were also offering me prospect packages in exchange for Cole.
-
The trade was made with clear intent and if you look at my other trades they all fit same goal, spreading money out and looking to be competitive in a couple years. I always deal fairly with people and talk through trades extensively in private messages.
-
It is a little worrying to see 5 vetoes on a trade that was discussed, given valid rational on both sides of the ticket, and that by the numbers makes sense for the teams individual situations. This is not a redraft league, manager have to think of their teams futures, finances, and competitive windows.
-
I’d definitely prefer the cole side, but not to an egregious level. Also not a fan of the veto
-
I don't think you will get to 7 on this one. I will say that in my experience, it hurts a league more to veto a trade than to let a bad trade pass. Basically in four years of playing Otto (13 leagues total), I have seen several vetos that tore leagues apart, but only one trade that there was reason to veto and that was because one owner admitted he made the trade to make sure the guy then in 1st wouldn't win. I believe you have to give owners maximum space to run their teams as they see fit.

Can we not change our veto choice? Probably it won’t matter, as 7 seems a very high bar to meet.

The only way I regret this trade this season is if Cole signs with the Dodgers and I don't get to root for him in real life and in fantasy.
-
I also believe that a veto should be used incredibly rarely (if at all). When I saw this trade I did not really look at it twice. Of course I would rather have Cole than Flaherty, but would I rather have Cole than Flaherty +$27? I honestly don't know. The other part of the trade is purely a question of what you think about Kieboom, but it certainly is not egregiously unbalanced. I know which side of the trade I would prefer, but it seems perfectly reasonable to prefer the other.

whoops said "is completely unsettling" and meant "is not"
-
2. The previous manager left the economics of my team in shambles, this trade frees up cap space without taking a massive hit at SP with Flaherty, gives me depth from Keller, and long term outlook at a shallow position 2B.
-
I appreciate the depth mangers are looking into the trades here. This trade provides tow pieces of real value to my team: 1. Youth for a rebuilding Dynasty team in a manner that is completely unsettling. Cole is better than Flaherty right now and in alot of ways Flaherty isn't miles behind him at 24 years old compared to Cole's 30.
-
Taking off the commissioner hat for a moment, I feel similarly to Gonny Jomes. There are many valid ways to assess value. I am always very careful with vetoes (I think I have vetoed one trade in 10+ years as a fantasy baseball player) because I believe all owners are free to assess value and run their teams as they see fit. Once I dug into the numbers, I found it pretty easy make a case for how this trade could benefit both teams. To me, that is the hallmark of a "fair" trade.
-
Thanks for soliciting feedback, Funky, and thanks to those who have already provided some insight.
-
Specifically on this trade, I don’t think this trade out of line to be in the realm of “unfair”. From a surplus perspective, Flaherty alone has roughly the same amount of 2020 surplus as Suarez and Cole, using fangraphs projections. That doesn’t include the possibility of a manager being bullish on Carter Kieboom’s long-term outcome or salary cap concerns. I can think of quite a few more trades that have flown around in this league and other ottoneu leagues that feel less fair.
