PTBNL now has Trout, Yelich, Bellinger, Harper, Lindor, Rendon, JDM, and JTR. How are we supposed to compete with that?! (No, it wasn't me who vetoed the trade).

Agree completely on the marketing angle. Also, the "unwritten rules" need to disappear completely. We need bat flips, guys celebrating home runs and fist pumps on big strikeouts. Can you imagine the young fans a guy like Tatis could bring in with a little showboating that then is shared by young fans?
-
And with everyone in charge being age 50+, well...you can see why the game is getting older and not younger.

Wouldn't you think more homeruns = more younger fans? I think the problem is baseball is so (SO) bad at letting the fans market the game. Let fans share clips on social media. Let fans make their own videos using MLB IP. The NBA and NHL do a great job generating buzz because fans do the heavy lifting for them. MLB wants to control the message and monetize the content so we're stuck with whatever the league chooses to feed us.

This is a large problem that Baseball must fix. The minimum batter faced rule is a nice start. Quite honestly, managers demanding that their hitters hit away from the shift is another (especially with people on base). The game can not just be homerun derby despite the analytics. The data may be right, but, under 35 and kids are not the daily fans we are, and that is a huge problem the game must address. We need less than 3 hour games and we need more balls in play so there is action.

IMy Baseball opinions have evolved over the years. I see the game as lagging behind how the world has evolved. We have shorter attention spans and less time as a society. The average age of the true fans continue to go up and up. I still see the beauty of a pitchers duel over a homerun fest, but that is fewer of us each year. I watch every day, but over the years an iPad is in my hands and the tv is more background. I am not alone in this. Too much time goes by with no balls in play.

As for the universal DH, that is the one rule change I am fine with. I used to be a hardcore "NL baseball is the better form of baseball" guy, but over time (maybe because I became an Angels fan and maybe because pitchers became worse and worse hitters) I have come to appreciate the DH, and now think with all the inter-league games, both leagues should use it.
-
Maybe you guys are right, but it feels like a whole lot of compromises to the game are being made in the name of getting the season in. That leads to the playoffs. What happens if a team has an outbreak like STL during the playoffs? Will that team be forced to forfeit? Will they just let them play anyway? What if it is the World Series? Somehow I doubt that MLB has considered these possibilities in any detail.
-
I completely agree with Nippon. I like that the league has been flexible enough and has struck the right tune with balancing safety and getting games in. If they make the 7 inning doubleheader or runner starts on 2nd a permanent thing, I'm not a fan at all. But for this year, why the hell not? Also, not a fan of universal DH but if they kept it, oh well.

Well, when I say I’m „pleasantly surprised“ I mean it in the context of baseball in the middle of a disastrous pandemic. Imho this is basically not the best idea. When the season started my bet was that the experiment would fail within one or maybe two weeks. But it didn’t and I am pleasantly surprised...
-
Lol...Seriously, I wish it were that simple. Because, honestly, I feel like MLB is working on destroying the last sport that I really love. I have been a hard core baseball fan for over 40 years (scary), and played in my first fantasy league in 1992. My fandom survived the 1994 strike, but not sure if it will survive this.

I am a curmudgeon. The runner on second base is like a little league rule, and 7 inning games literally changes the basic structure of the game, which had been in place for over 120 years. 16 playoff teams out of 30 total teams is a joke. The whole thing is a naked money grab. They will literally do anything to get to that sweet, sweet playoff dough, even if not all teams play even 60 games. To me, it has become a joke. Ok, sorry, rant over.
-
Pleasantly surprised as well. Especially after the early team quarantines of the Marlins and Cardinals. I‘m just a little bit worried about the dense schedule of the Cards because in NL Central every game will count. What to think about the 7 inning DH I did not decide yet. But I know, what I like I’d never thought I would: the runner on 2nd in Extras is great and fun!
-
Now that we're about halfway through the season, how do we think it's going? I think we're actually going to get the full season in. I've been pleasantly surprised. How about the 7 inning DHs?

Can't say I'm a fan of the fantasy implications of 7-inning double headers. It's going to cost guys plate appearances (and starters some innings too).

I think this may be the first year of ottoneu that i try and hit all my game/ip limit as early as possible in case of another team outbreak.

most recent that I have heard is that there are 13 players/caoches on the Marlins who tested positive...Phillies/Yankees is also cancelled due to the Marlin's positive tests...also has anyone heard if games missed due to COVID are cancelled or postponned? I have heard both at this point and was wondering if anyone has any better information

Any reason why we still have last season's points totals showing? Seems like it should've reset to 0 at some point.

Yes, it looks like the season is going to at least start, so get those lineups set. I think with a 60-game season and the random impact of Covid 19 on players/teams literally anything is possible (ok, not the O's making the playoffs, but anything else).

Since apparently we're getting baseball this week, I set my lineup and rotation and I hate to say it, but my team is loaded and you're all playing for second
-
That said, given the state of things in the US, I continue to believe that the chance a full season is played is somewhere between slim and none. FL, TX, AZ and CA are all in bad shape right now and those states represent a full third of MLB teams.
-
I think if the full season is played (even if it only 60 games), we have to treat it as a season for league purposes and therefore things would be as normal. Unfortunately, guys who opt out do not get special consideration. Think of it as a season-ending injury with (fortunately) no carry-over to next season.
-
The other thing is, I know we were talking about how to do arbs and raises but did we decide on what to do if season is played and a player opts out? Do they stay the same or get raised?
-
I’d do a beer exchange. I’ve stopped chasing every release here in Stl, but I get some perennial rare beers here and there.
-
I'm having problems getting excited for baseball but I'm totally game for a beer exchange!
-
I would be very much interested in a beer exchange. Does anyone live in Austin? They have a beer down there I've been trying to get my hands on in Chicago that for the life of me I can't find.
-
We should start a beer exchange… Best local varieties… Anyone interested?

@rockies my thought is if they announced something like the world baseball classic or some form of tournament other than the World Series you would see players dropping out in droves. Honestly, I’m glad the NBA and NHL are going to give it a whirl… They are both taking different approaches and it might give us an opportunity to see what works best. I just hope that doesn’t occur at the safety expense of hundreds or maybe thousands of people associated with those leagues.

Personally already being in July I think NHL and NBA should just scrap the season and prepare more detailed plans to be ready for the 2021 season instead of starting late and then delaying next season.
-
MLB I think took too long and at this point if they do anything it shouldn't be something considered an actual season. Something like the World Baseball Classic with maybe a few more games. A big tournament that is regionalized in pods and then the winning teams from that pod goes to a final four in another location. We all know this is a weird year so why try and force an actual World Series.
-
I think it's anybody's guess as to what extent this season will proceed as designed. Here's my big question: what happens when 10 players on a team test positive? Don't know if y'all saw the headline on ESPN, but an MLS team, FC Dallas, had to drop out of the MLS restart tournament due to its number of positive tests. Do we see a similar occurrence in MLB? If so, where do we go from there?

I believe that they pull the plug on the season by July 20th. The plan to travel/stay/train was not well thought out and was made when conditions were more favorable. They have not even kept with the every other day testing and 24 hour hour testing results known and we are only a week into Summer camp. I think that the players force this decision.
-
I'm 50/50 on if it starts. 25/75 that there won't be some sort of delay.

If we do wish to implement rules to improve "roster flexibility", I think the best, and perhaps only, way to do this would be to reduce the games/IP caps. I'm not sure that's a route I'd like to go down - an even shorter season allows for even more randomness - but to address Taco's concern, I figured I'd toss out the idea.

I thrive in a luck based environment. I do like Tribe's proposal on if they complete the full 60 game season, then we arb as usual. But if there's a cancellation or shortening, then we do the normal offseason increases and that's it.
-
Niv has said something about treating guys who opt out entirely as if they were on the 60 day IL, which will open up a roster spot, but obviously money could be an issue. As for guys who test positive, I am not sure there is any way they can be treated differently than a normal IL stint. Unfortunately, this season is going to be even more luck-based than normal.
-
Is there a way for us to increase roster flexibility for this season? It would suck to have a bunch of guys out for 14 days (or more) with positive tests. Just brainstorming or workshopping ideas...

...will proceed as normal. 2) If a player opts-out at any point in the season OR if a player is placed on the new Covid-19 IL at any point in the season (reserved for players with symptoms and/or positive tests), then that player is ineligible for arbitration but still subject to the $1/$2 salary increases.

I have a proposal: 1) if the regular season is cancelled OR if fewer than 60 regular season games are played, then there are no offseason salary increases or arbitration. 60 games is 37% of a 162-game season, and I think anything less than 60 warrants no offseason adjustments (owners should not lose the benefit of owning players at a certain cost). If a 60-game regular season is completed but the postseason is cancelled, we'll still call it a completed season and offseason adjustmets (cont'd)...
