Honestly, do we need to make any adjustments? I bet if baseball is canceled we will all be so bored out of our minds that we wouldn’t be objected to spending a little time looking at baseball players and increasing their values through arbitration… Honestly, I don’t think it’s really going to matter in the long run. But, saying that I am not against not doing arbitration either. I hope everyone is safe and doing well.

However, we still have to consider the possibilities that for health-related reasons, (1) the season never actually starts or (2) the season starts, but cannot be completed. So, we still need a discussion around these possibilities. Obviously, there is no rush, but as people start to think about fantasy baseball again, think about how we should deal with a season that does not happen or that is not completed.
-
Ok, now that we know what baseball is going to try to do, we can make some decisions. I think that if MLB completes its planned 60 game season, we have to count it as a season although it will likely be the weirdest season in living memory with players possibly opting out or getting sick, and small sample sizes making results and standings a bit of a dice throw. In this case, all the regular rules (increases and arb) will apply.
-
Baseball is back?
-
I would lean towards skipping arb this year. If MLB Owners wont't pay the players a full salary should we? We crafted our rosters for this season and will never get to see how they really performed. With that said I am ok with letting it ride and not changing anything as all teams will be impacted equally.

I just read that five Phillies players tested positive for Covid, with 20 more awaiting test results. What happens when this occurs mid-season? Are players heading to the DL for 2+ weeks? What if a third of a team tests positive? What if a third of a team tests positive during the World Series? Just keep throwing players on to the field, until there is nobody left to play? I envision this being a giant mess...

I am pretty sure we can do whatever we want with regard to arbitration because using commissioners' tools, I can change players' salaries which would mean, at worst, I would have to go back and reverse all of the automatic increases, and then we would just not do arbitration. So, it is just a matter of deciding how we as a league want to handle whatever situation arises.
-
Hi all. Thanks for getting this discussion started. I think we need to consider how to deal with three scenarios, which seem to me most likely at this point: (1) season cancelled; (2) season limited to around 50 games; and (3) season starts with a plan for around 50 games, but cannot be completed because of health reasons and season thereafter cancelled.
-
Honestly, I’m fine with whatever direction we go… Everyone will be equally affected by the rules. I do completely see your point of not doing arbitration if the season is completely canceled. Actually, the more I am sitting here thinking about it the more I think that would be something that we should seriously consider.

Even if we agreed that the offseason needs to be changed a little bit... do we have the ability to make those changes?

I've thought about it a bit. I'm of the position that it's business as usual in terms of cuts, but not for salary increases or arbitration. Increasing salaries through arbitration effectively serves as a double whammy; players' costs are increased twice without the benefit of being able to score points. I think the same concept applies to the $1/$2 increases. These rules are in place for competitive balance, but they shouldn't be applied twice without the chance to compete. What do others think?

Not to be the negative guy, but if the MLB season is not played this year, would our league continue on as usual in terms of arbitration, cuts, offseason, etc? Are there are rules we'd want to alter due to no games being played?

The MLB Draft is tonight. Totally caught me off guard. The only prospect I could name is Ed Howard from Jackie Robinson West. We have a few draft buffs in the league, right?
-
I’m our first real offseason going into our second actual season. Simming 2 days every night though free agent signing period, because we want to be able to negotiate and counter offer the top free agents.
-
Dude it’s so much fun. 26 team league, every team is owned and on Slack and very active. We had a computer automated initial draft, and we simmed one week every night at 8pm. Next year we are simming one week every other night to slow it down. We’re in the offseason right now.

When the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in the lockout shortened season of 2013, I didn't feel like it was compromised or asterisk worthy. If they play 80 games and have a playoff, whoever wins I think will have earned it. Dr. Boom - how does an OOTP online league work? I play OOTP 20 by myself (nerd) and enjoy it immensely.

Anyone else feel the same?

Let's say we do have a season, maybe best case scenario 80 games with an expanded postseason. Would you want your team to win the World Series? I mean, I've never seen my Cleveland Indians win the World Series. Neither has any Clevelander under the age of 72, for that matter. Could you imagine this year being the year? All this time, all this suffering, and it ends with a championship in some sort of make-shift season with a 14-team playoff? I don't think I would want it, not this year.

As of today - what are people's predictions for when/if the season returns? I'd say there's a 60% chance we get a season at all. Just too much money at stake. Sucks what's happening to the minor leaguers.

The region I live in (population 2.1 million) is seeing about 15 new cases a day, while the sub-region (population 725,000) has not seen a new case in 5 or 6 days. So, not totally wiped out, but clearly getting under control. Not sure how baseball is going to proceed with case counts not significantly declining in the US (not to mention the potential financial fight), and I continue to be pessimistic on a 2020 season happening. Stay safe all.
-
Hi all. Thought I would send a sports-related update from Spain. Today, the government announced that La Liga (the nation's top soccer league) can resume play on June 8, and it looks like they will start up on June 12, exactly 3 months after play was suspended on March 12. I don't really know many of the details on how they are handling the coronavirus in this process, but I will say the number of cases in Spain have dropped from over 7,500 a day at peak to around 500-600 now.
-
Personally, I am looking forward to eating food cooked by someone other than my wife or myself. It has been 8 weeks. Stay safe all.
-
For example, next week only 50% of the country will enter level 1, which will permit (among other things) restaurants to open only for service outside, and only at 50% capacity. As for the US, as far as I can tell they are doing things completely wrong (this is not a political statement, they are literally reopening businesses with cases still increasing, which will lead to many more cases). That said, I have to agree with Dr. Boom (Dr. Doom?) on baseball...there will not be a season in 2020.
-
Hi all...ask and ye shall receive. Things in Spain have definitely improved. Increases in new cases and deaths have slowed significantly, and last week we started on a five step process to lift the lockdown (for example, last week people were able to go outside to exercise for the first time since March 15). The government seems to have a solid plan for returning things to what they call the new normal, and regions that do not meet stringent criteria cannot advance to each new level.

Be safe man

Also very curious to hear the latest scoop out of Spain. Here in Chicago, we're seeing what I would call undesirable levels of cooperation on shelter in place orders. We're actually going to head out of town this weekend and spend the summer in Colorado. I guess you could say we're guilty of violating the shelter in place orders too, ha.

I think the biggest question is what happens when a player tests positive? What if it's 3-4 guys on a team that test positive? Are we going to have to test our players weekly, if not daily? Health and safety is #1 priority, and it's going to be a huge challenge to build a season while preserving health and safety.

This is purely speculation (I haven't been paying attention to reports), but I'm guessing we see something - at the earliest - similar to the Arizona Fall League. Season starts mid-September and lasts until just before Christmas (including playoffs). Maybe instead of Arizona it's Texas or Florida, but I wouldn't be surprised to see teams concentrated in one geographic location. But that's a total guess on a very fluid and distant situation.

I think the Packers did a fantastic job. Anytime you have a team with a HOF QB that went to the NFC Championship Game last year and you can add backups with your first two picks, you have to make those moves. The shareholders are going to be very happy

Of course, our so-called representatives are supposed to prevent that, and the courts are supposed to be a backstop against a failure of representative branches, but since at least 9/11, all branches of government have been in on the idea that we are in some kind of permanent emergency that requires a permanent taking of individual rights. That is a problem that really needs to be addressed.
-
Dr. Boom: I think you are right, unless people fight back. The thing is that too many people fight at the wrong time (e.g. people now claiming the Constitution gives them the right to leave their house despite a stay at home order). During an emergency, we have to give up rights for the good of the society. What we should not do (and unfortunately did do after 9/11) is allow what should be a short-term reduction in civil liberties to become permanent.
-
Not sure what life will be like but I have a feeling that we just lost a lot of rights.

I think directionally I was thinking "This is how things were" compared to "This is how they're now". I think your LA to San Jose story of leaving your house one hour before takeoff I think is a pretty good example of how things have changed and most likely will never go back. I'm curious as to what the new normal will be like if/when we get on the other side of this pandemic. Like open seating in an office setting? Probably not happening again anytime soon.

I am not sure they are comparable, but here is my favorite pre-9/11 flying story. I had a job where I flew from LA to San Jose pretty often. I used to take a 6 am Southwest flight. I could leave my house at 5 am, arrive at the parking lot at 5:20, walk in the terminal at 5:30, be through security by 5:35 and board the plane at 5:40. Did it at least 20 times in 2000-2001; never had a problem. When I told my nephews (born 1999) that story, they thought I was making it up.
-
Ok so for some of our veterans in the league who maybe remember flying before 9/11 and after 9/11. What were some of the differences? I feel like 9/11 and CoVid are the two events in my lifetime so far where "things will never be the same". I do think sports will come back but things won't be back to normal until a vaccine is developed and even after that, like Dr Boom said, will there be a similar reaction (shutting everything down) when the next widespread sickness hits?
-
Sorry, I just hate when people compare this to the flu. From what I understand, other than the fact that they are both caused by coronaviruses (as is the common cold), they are nothing alike. As for baseball (and other sports), I think people have to adjust to the fact that the world is going to be massively disrupted for at least the next 6-12 month, and trying to do anything "normal" in that time is going to be fraught with difficulty; and maybe, ultimately, not worth it.

Another stat on this: on December 28, 2019 the NY Post ran an article about the bad flu season this year. It noted that 1,800 people had died (nationwide) of the seasonal flu in 2019. That compares to over 22,000 deaths so far from Covid-19 in an outbreak that is far from over. Also, apropos of nothing, when the stats are all totaled, the death toll from Covid-19 will be much higher than what is currently being reported. Maybe as much as five-to-six times as high.
