…suit, he just seems to be trying to, um, make a little money off it). Anyway, I can’t really tell if it’s a big problem (though if something *doesnt* look like a big problem on Twitter, it probably isn’t), but not wanting to do business with PayPal is an understandable position. In that case the LeagueSafe option seems better to me than checks. I think Chuck moved to Colorado awhile ago. You could try to call it business Income (and deduct expenses) but that seems asking for IRS attention.

…same few reports, especially one involving Chris Moneymaker. These reports go back several years—Moneymaker’s is from May 2021, I saw others mentioned as far back as 2019. This month a Moneymaker backed class action suit was filed against PayPal for confiscating funds (not for freezing accounts, no one says Paypal can’t do that in response to TOS violations); only 1 of the named aims anything related to fantasy sports (Moneymaker actually got his money back from Paypal so he’s not part of the…

Thanks Mikey. Some boring football this weekend meant any number of Twitter (etc) rabbit holes could be visited. What I think I’ve learned: it’s not the IRS. It’s PayPal freezing accounts (and in a few cases confiscating funds) over TOS/AUP violations. It seems pretty clear that (without PayPal’s approval; that’s how Niv can use if for ottoneu) fantasy sports are a violation of their terms of service and acceptable use policy. How widespread this is isn’t clear—most references are to the same…

…for this kind of thing, but I think they’re trying to make a point about gambling now that it’s become so widespread. (3) I’m not sure if it’s officially “hobby income, but last I looked, the form instructions actually used fantasy sports as an example. (4) where did Charles move to?

Sorry, I’ve been offline for a couple of days (I forgot how much this group can talk once they get engaged). (1) regarding a “citation “ (I really thought that part of my life was behind me), I didn’t have a source I can send you. Lots of rumor and hearsay from my other league, plus a Fox News story (granted, not a great source) identifying situations where accounts have been frozen and citing the $600 trigger level. (2) I agree that it seems unlikely the IRS would take the time…
-
Thanks John that’s good to hear. Fred I’m a little surprised Idaho isn’t ineligible. Henry, yeah, report your winnings to the IRS as hobby income—they’d probably be annoyed at most of us if we tried to report it as business income (some of you might meet the “profit in 3 out of 5 years” rule but not me).

Move back to.idaho

I've lived in an ineligible state since 2016. It has not effected the delivery of any winnings. I tried to ask Niv about it when I moved here and he never responded. I suspect that was intentional.
-
Of course, Capped also has illegal beer shipping built into its charter. LOL.

I thought the way to report Ottoneu winnings was as "Hobby Income". I guess Paypal transactions provide a paper trail, independent of whether it's friends or family or goods and services. And I guess if an account had a lot of unspecified transactions might look like actual gambling or something. But I can't see how the IRS would care about this unless the person making the distributions was taking a cut.

I just renewed my team (via PayPal!). I was surprised this was still $50. I’m probably just confusing the 2 leagues in my head…but what do we do here if someone who lives in an ineligible state (includes Arizona, Virginia, and Washington) wins a prize? I suspect we’ve worked this out (Charles solved it by movingJ but I can’t remember how.

If we are really worried, I'd recommend moving to LeagueSafe (www.leaguesafe.com). I imagine it's only an issue with big money leagues though.
-
Yeah, I misunderstood your suggestion—I thought you meant we each split up our payments so we pay over 3 months (but really you just meant that for winnings), but really you just suggested we split the group up. Seriously this time, I don’t really see the point of that. PayPal processes more than 12 million transactions every day. If the algorithm is so good it sees and cares about 11 $100 transaction in a month it’s not going to be fooled by spreading them out.

But all Mikey’s payments out are different amounts and to different people. And all his in payments are from different folks in multiple states. Maybe the IRS suspects he is an online therapist and solves our problems in one session? I don’t see how repeated amounts is an issue. I’m willing to toss in a few extra cents if 50.17 is preferred over a round number. I think this is much ado about nothing myself.
-
Winnings? Dream on BBB. And if I was a transaction monitoring algorithm I’d be a lot more suspicious of repeated payments. One $300 payment is, who knows? Repeated monthly $100 payments looks like paying your yard guy and pretending it’s friends and family.

And I’m happy to take my winnings dispersed slowly at the end of the year. First paid in October, second November, etc. that seems easier than each player paying each winner.
-
Could we just have two or three folks a month pay so it’s not so compressed? If we start now and assign each person a pay date of 1, 10, & 20 we could be done by early in the season.
-
I’m for whatever is easiest. Have you got a link or citation explaining this issue? The IRS does have new rules this year that lower the threshold for when PayPal/Venmo/etc have to send a 1099K (down to $600 for this year), but I think that applies to “goods and services” payments, not “family and friends” payments. I’d be pretty surprised if the IRS has the manpower to monitor PayPal transactions

…that instead of collecting entry fees up front, we move to the honor system. I can keep a spreadsheet on who owes what, then at the end of the season I can send out instructions to each person on who they should pay how much. This should keep the transactions relatively small and dispersed, hopefully avoiding triggering the IRS’ limits. Thoughts?
-
Speaking of Capped, we have a potential issue that’s come up in my fantasy football league. Apparently the IRS is cracking down on fantasy sports and freezing PayPal accounts when they see what they consider suspicious groups of transactions. The example that was pointed out happened when the person did the payout at the end of the year. This has caused my football league of 30 years to revert to sending checks. Since we’ve now been playing long enough to know each other, I’d like to propose…
-
Hitch and Mikey generally handle that stuff in Capped.

and what about in Capped?

and what about in Capped?

Thanks for the heads up. The draft is on Selection Sunday, as always. This year that's March 13.

Two things, they extended keeper deadline to 2/15. Also I will be unable to draft 3/21 through 3/24

Felt compelled to cut someone after Mikey did. Wisdom really sucks , fill in for injury guy , worth 2$

I must admit I know much to nothing about Noelvi Marte.

Here is another one from December which I give much weight to, please note Brennen Davis is ranked 5th . https://www.fantraxhq.com/top-fantasy-baseball-prospects/

I'm feeling pretty good about my catcher stashes now. Moreno #9 & Melendez #47. My other minor leaguers are looking good too: Lowe #45, Pages #62, and Miranda #76.
Prior to 2021, Melendez was top 50 and Moreno was a best-of-the-rest. But then Moreno absolutely crushed AA pitching last season.

Here is one of the later prospects lists from the fall. Please think long and hard before trading top prospects pre-draft and taking on salary . Close to majors/top prospects are platinum chips in here . You can always trade them , no advantage to taking on someone's high contract throw backs now . https://www.justbaseball.com/prospects/2021-mlb-top-100-prospects/

So much for the " year round " aspect to this. With lockout, no hot stove , no player movement or signings to spur activity . mlb network is airing 1970s WS games

It seems like its a foregone conclusion . CBA expires Dec. 1 and players union really wants it in next agreement .

Is there talk of the universal DH again?
-
I've been thinking how the universal DH will effect things . Will not be just for old or clumsy guys, but will benefit those prospects that are either blocked or don't seem to have a position . Also seems guys like Schwarber will benefit by getting more overall at bats playing in NL parks now, but may lose position eligibility and be U only the following year.
