Sounds exhausting to me. With Hosmer’s career earnings, and another $39M coming with no requirement to even get out of bed, I’d much rather relax in a lakeside mansion, and only travel when and where I felt like it. No trips to Cleveland, Milwaukee, Baltimore… I’d never need to go anywhere I didn’t want to. But to each their own. Maybe Hosmer thinks he can pull a Matt Carpenter resurgence.
-
Travel i.e. hooking up with different women several times a week while dining like a king in 4 ⭐️ hotels. Yeah, that would suck.

Competing is a hell of a drug.
-
I read on mlbtr Orioles and Cubs are interested in signing Hosmer. My question - since Hosmer earns exactly the same amount the next 3 seasons whether he plays a game or not, why would he possibly agree to sign anywhere? He can go fishing, play golf, coach his kids’ little league teams (if he has any), and drink a beer at 9am everyday if he wants, and he still gets paid. Why would he go through the rigours of MLB - travel, late nights, hotels, etc?

Cohen is playing with other people’s money so he might not care if Correa stays healthy.
-
With $300M riding on his health, I’m not at all surprised. I’m surprised it doesn’t happen this way more often. What business does less “due diligence” on an expenditure that huge?
-
Just read "Carlos Correa’s physical with the Mets has “raised concerns”, according to a report from Ken Rosenthal and Dan Hayes of The Athletic. Per the report, the concern centers on Correa’s surgically repaired lower right leg." But have also read because of how much Cohen has publicly spoken about the deal he really couldn't back out now. I don't think Correa's leg has landed him on the IL or given him trouble for years has it? But it seems to be a big concern for both the Giants an

The Mets will pick him up and give him another $32M.

It will be interesting to see. Dodgers owe him $32M. Will they seriously pay him $32M to play against them? What does that accomplish? If you owe him the money, why not get innings from him? If Dodgers cut him, someone will take him.
-
Trevor Bauer reinstated. Will any team actually let him pitch?
-
Dodgers have Trevor Bauer back suddenly. $32M for 1 year actually seems cheap these days. Dodgers rotation got deeper all of a sudden. Bauer, Kershaw, Gonsolin, Urias, May, Syndergaard, Pepiot, Stone, Miller.
-
I’d love to see the Mets sign Kimbrel, Eovaldi, and maybe Segura, Myers and Belt for their bench. Why not a $600M payroll?
-
Red Sox signed Niko Goodrum. Not quite what they need to keep up with the big spenders in SD, NY, Philly, but at least they have Niko Goodrum on board now. 🤦♂️
-
My main opinion (which affects nothing, but I hope millions of fans have similar views) is MLB is not going to be sustainable with a handful of teams operating as if money is fake. It can’t keep going like this very long. Can it?
-
But for me, I think Lindor and Correa were so valuable largely based on défense at SS, and Correa moving to 3B probably waters his défense down a bit. Also, as their contracts take them to their careers’ ends, their défense probably only goes downhill. I think they will be very good for a few more years, but I doubt anybody given a choice would ever take Lindor or Correa over Judge.
-
An argument like that boils down to how you define “great”, and without a common frame of reference there is no point debating it. Keep in mind WAR is a counting stat, and WAR over 5 years is far from ideal - it excludes young players, players who were injured, etc. It is a subjective thing - everybody can have their own idea.
-
Agree with you that there is no guarantee to make the playoffs. Fully disagree that Lindor and Correa are not great. Over the last 5 years they are the 5th and 19th best position players by WAR, over the last two years 9th and 12th. WAR isn't everything but I am not sure how you can frame that as "not great".
-
What confuses me is why didn’t the Mets go hard after Judge? Seems like a better fit and much better value. What is interesting is the Mets are no guarantee to make playoffs. While Lindor and Correa are very good players, they are not that great. If Scherzer and Verlander were to miss significant time or start to show their age, I could easily see the Braves, Phillies and possibly the Marlins finish higher

Going by Sportrac, the Mets’ payroll exceeds the bottom 10 payrolls combined. But that is before luxury tax. With luxury tax, the Mets’ payroll seems to exceed the combined payrolls of (no joke) half the teams in MLB.

Can anyone remember the last time something like this happened? Where a big free agent was practically announced by his new team and then overnight switched positions and teams just like that??

How long until Mets trade their wealth of 3B and SS prospects for even more high-$ players? Baty, Mauricio, Vientos, Williams, Reimer. No open g at 3B or SS this decade. They are all expendable.

When Cohen inevitably gets outed as a fraud (which has happened multiple times in the past), Mets will be left with a devastating debt. Who would buy the team in this shape? It will go bankrupt, and get sold at a huge discount to someone who will run it like they are a small market team.
-
According to my calculations with an estimated $410m payroll, the luxury tax will be $147m.

This is messed up. The Mets do not have a TV deal like the Dodgers or Yankees, in fact it is quite ordinary. Cohen is spending money like it is not his own, like he didn't earn it. Extremely successful high finance guys do not spend money foolishly like this, in fact they are relative misers. I've been saying, this Cohen guy is the next Madoff/Epstein.

What a circus! Correa is NOT the Giants’ SS… he is the Mets’ 3B. And Eduardo Escobar is a $10M utility player who can only really play 3B/1B/DH? And the Mets now pay the full 90% penalty on all of Correa’s salary, putting them close to $500M. What the F_ck?!?!?!

Summer vacations will definitely be in the north direction! It stays hot and humid for better part of five months. Comfortable by the pool in the shade though!
-
“Great weather” in Orlando? Isn’t it too hot and humid? The Thoroughbreds fan base would hate the weather in Florida. Much nicer up in the Adirondacks where the cool air keeps T’breds fans comfortable (aside from 4 months a year of ice storms and heavy snows, but that is a small price to pay to avoid 96 degrees, 96% humidity, and year round insects).
-
The Rockers have announced the franchise has moved to Orlando, Florida. The owners says, “It was always my intention to move the team when I bought it. After a transitional time with headquarters in Delaware, we have finally settled in Orlando. The great weather, love of overpriced theme parks, and lack of income tax (so my players can keep more of the lavish $400 I’m paying them) are main reasons I picked Orlando. Hope to celebrate the move with a championship in our first year!”

I agree, in fact it is exactly what I said when I heard, after 🤮, Heyward part 2.

Dansby does remind me of Heyward around the time he signed his big deal. Primarily a glove first player with a good offensive season in his walk year which led to a nice sized payday. Hoping this one goes a lot better than the Heyward deal (which I was not a fan of).

“Regret” not “refer”. Sorry, auto correct and poor typing skills.
-
But as the last-man-standing among the big name free agents, he was definitely getting paid. I think Cubs will refer it like they regretted Heyward. But who knows?
-
I wonder if there will be a pendulum swing with salaries at some point. When Dansby Swanson (a fine player but far from a star) is worth $177M, things have gotten out of control.
-
Looks Swanson to the Cubs for 7 years $177 million.

According to Sportrac, the Yankees are “only” at $288M now for 2023 “competitive balance tax total” (whatever that means). Mets are at $353M. So the Yankees could still sign Swanson, Brantley and JDM, and trade for Bryan Reynolds, and STILL owe less than the Mets. What would stop the Yankees from doing that?
-
It is striking to see the disparity in spending. But what makes me feel uneasy about the sport’s future is my sense the mega-teams are not at their limits. Is there any reason to think Yankees couldn’t also sign Dansby Swanson, Michael Brantley, and a couple RPs?
-
The Cubs are at odds with all the streaming services as they just started their own network, obviously they are missing out on a ton of Ad revenue.

I'll be honest, I'm disgusted with the way free agency has gone this year. More so than any other. The economic disparity is clearly unfair. Fans on either coast may love it, but ultimately it will be bad for you as well.
