I think Angels are a tire fire. If I ran LAA I would trade Ohtani and Trout this winter and I would see what I could get for anyone else on the team. Maybe see if I could ditch Rendon’s contract with Ohtani. I would only sign low-$ free agents to try to flip them at the deadline (like the Pirates do every year with guys like Anderson, Quintana). Angels need a total reset. They need a new ballpark, a new identity, a new GM, and a new farm system.
-
Ever since they built New Comiskey I thought it was ugly, poorly designed, in a terrible location (yes I know Old Comiskey was across the street but that’s not a great reason to build there). White Sox would benefit from new ownership, new ballpark, and a focus on rebuilding their farm system. Comiskey has gotten cosmetic face lifts but it’s not a nice ballpark.
-
this. The Chicago Bulls part of the equation can only feed the White Sox so much. As soon as the old man is gone, the White Sox will be pinching pennies because the kids who will take (if they don’t sell) over don’t give a crap about the White Sox. The Sox will never draw that well given the location of their stadium. It is very near the most dangerous part of Chicago.

The Angels are starting to look like a big mess, even the Trout contract is beginning to look bad. The White Sox might be on that list if they don’t make a deep run this year. They have no farm system and their young studs are oft injured and underperforming. Keep in mind, the White Sox are not really a large market team, their payroll is too high for their revenues, especially with no deep playoff run. I know 2/9 sons of the ownership group, it will be tough for them to keep spending like t

Angels I wouldn’t say a big mess right now but a ton of disappointment and some bad decisions in the past (Hamilton, Pujols contracts). Rendon is off to a bad start with them as well. It’s hard to imagine how you could have had Trout for a decade and Ohtani for half a decade and have so little to show for it.

Definitely the Rockies
-
Biggest mess in MLB right now: Nationals, Angels, Rockies, or other?
-
The Nats did several things right along the way as well, obviously signing Soto is one of them. Their team is an absolute mess right now.
-
I believe the Lehrner family has financial issues. I think their wealth was always overestimated and was based on leveraged real estate holdings. That is why so many of the large contracts they doled out were deferred. The Nats got real lucky they won a title with all the financial incompetence. It helps to really suck at the right time and having the #1 pick when Harper and Strasburg in the draft.
-
The Corbin contract was idiotic but at least they got a title before he declined. Strasburg’s contract was filed out to him after the title, and he immediately got hurt, then got hurt again, and again. Dumb contracts both. Without those dumb deals, they could have afforded Soto. But whatever. They got a better deal than I expected them to get.
-
Nats got a title with Soto, and they turned him into a bunch of good young players before he got expensive. I know their fans will whine but I don’t think they were crazy. Part of the problem was throwing insane $ at Strasburg knowing his injury history.
-
I’m also interested to see how much better it makes Soto hitting in a killer lineup. He’ll be much better protected and I expect he might walk less but get more to hit overall. He hasn’t really had much protection the past couple years in DC.

Yeah I agree on the Soto/Bell deal. I think the Nats did ok if they “had” to trade him but prefer the Padres side with the superstar there for sure. I too wouldn’t be surprised if they were able to retain him longer. Studs as good and young as him rarely get traded and those deals seem to almost always work out well for the team getting the established star rather than the prospects. It’s hard to imagine peak Abrams, Gore and Hassell providing the same value as a 25 year old Juan Soto.

Imagine pitching to the Padres’ lineup when Tatis is back!
-
I was thinking the same thing about the Mahle trade…. Most sportswriters say the Twins didn’t give up much, but I think they totally under-estimate what the Twins paid for Mahle.
-
players that will outperform a monster contract.
-
I feel I'm relatively balanced when it comes to favoring prospects or major leaguers. But I really like the Padres deal for Soto, I'm not a huge Hassell fan, I like Gore a lot but his arm problems are a big concern and while Abrams is Ty Cobb in the minors, he has looked overwhelmed in the majors so are, albeit he is very young. I look upon Soto as favorably as a healthy Trout. I'm confident that the Padres will have a great opportunity to sign Soto long term and he will be one of the few
-
Back to Montas, I thought the Reds haul for Mahle was much, much better. Granted they were bats instead of pitchers, but still I liked the Reds haul over the A's.

Yeah that's a big one! Also saw Hosmer was supposed to be part of it but rejected the trade so will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Initially looks like Abrams, Gore, Bobby Barrels, etc are part of the return.

Soto and Bell to SD! That should shake things up going in to the playoffs.
-
I don't think it is weak. I think they got 3 MLB ready arms, 2 of them with pretty significant upside. I don't know much about Bowman, but I think the deal seems pretty fair to me.
-
I don't know I'd say very weak but do think it seems like a lighter return. He's under control for the rest of this year and next year so not just a rental. Waldichuk is a nice prospect but I personally would've wanted more if I'm trading Montas. Maybe the A's just don't have a lot of leverage because everyone knows when they need to cut payroll?

Anyone else think that was a very weak return for Montas?

Wow, wonder how many people had Hader going to San Diego before this weekend?

Yeah it definitely hinges on what you think of Noelvi Marte, but there is risk for sure. Part of why I kinda like it, I enjoy teams going for it and giving their fans a chance at an exciting playoff run or two. I imagine Cincinnati and their fans are happy with their return though.

Nice little pick up in value for Buxton Wonders though, moving from Cincinnati to Seattle is pretty big.
-
That's a hefty price for 1.4 years of Castillo on a team that might not be quite ready. Keeping in mind that Castillo is not G Cole.
-
Mariners have been “rebuilding” for so many years, their fans must be excited to see a deal like that.
-
I like Castillo to the Mariners. Will be good to not have to pitch half his games in Cincinnati. Maybe will be energized by a playoff push too.

What a kick in the gut to see the Mike Trout news. I know it’s my age showing, but I still think of him as a young superstar. It’s weird realizing he is 30. I hope he still has a decade or more of elite baseball, but the injury news sounds ominous.
-
I'm a Sox fan and I want them to sell off. They've got a unique chance to do a super quick retool to really set themselves up for the next couple of years. They would be stupid to not sell right now.
-
The great thing about trading Boegarts and JDM is they can be signed back next year. The other (hidden) best part is they can be traded to teams to help them beat Yankees! Sox fans might not want a sell-off, but imagine the fun if JDM goes to Astros and knocks the Yankees out!🤣
-
I really wish they would. They have a great chance to sell now and do a super fast rebuild to be competitive as early as next year still, but it's Boston and they "Have to compete" every year so they won't sell and just leave themselves in a more average position in 2023 after barely missing the playoffs this year.
-
Damn I never proof read and I suck at typing. I also had a few beers. Sorry for my horrible typing. “Would have SOME value.” I don’t know how I managed to type “aomori”.
-
Red Sox are in last place, below .500, and have quite a few players on expiring contracts who would be valuable to contenders: JDM, Boegarts, Eovaldi, Kiké, even players like Vasquez, JBJ, Brasier, Sawamura, Diekman and Pivetta would have Aomori value. They should have a ton of cap space for 2023, so why not trade all these guys? Make it interesting.

If anyone wants to carry Meyer as a stash on the IL through next year, he is available cheap. I’m only focusing on 2023, and he won’t help me.
-
Yeah that’s a real downer for a guy like Meyer, he’s probably out until 2024 now. Also disappointing to hear Trout has some rare spine/back condition he’ll have to manage carefully the rest of his career.

I feel sorry for Max Meyer. Top prospect gets 2 starts in the majors and immediately gets TJS. I hope he heals fully. Pitchers get hurt so often it’s frustrating.
-
I’m in Rhode Island this weekend which is pretty much Red Sox country. Been drinking since 11am, look up at the TV in the bar and I thought I saw the score was 27-4 in the 6th. I had to ask my buddy next to me if I was hallucinating.

If anyone wants to pick up another team LaRussa’s Bombers in League 234 is available. It’s been a pretty good league this past year. Figured I’d mention it here since this is my favorite league with the best owners 😉

I just re-read my message and realized my typo. The Troy Haymakers were the NA team and wore light blue. The Troy TROJANS were the NL team and wore green and orange.
-
The Troy Haymakers were a National Association team, they wore light blue. The Haymakers were a National League team, they wore green and orange. Sadly Troy was once a viable MLB city, but these days all the factories are gone and it’s a shadow of its past.
-
That’s actually even better than a Harper jersey! I love baseball and love history and definitely “baseball history“. I like learning about local baseball history and all the obscure teams and players most people will never know.

HR hitters in an 1870s league get a Lipman Pike jersey. Pike played for my hometown Troy Haymakers. Unfortunately even in Troy few people have any idea we had a National Association team in the 1870s, or a National League team (the Trojans) in the 1880s. But apparently Pike was the top HR hitter of the 1870s.
-
I hit a home run in my 1870's league at Living History Farms here Spa! I will settle for a jersey shirt as well :)

I had similar experiences at Philly and Camden recently. I just walked in to the ballpark, barely even noticed security. Just scanned my e-ticket (I miss real tickets) and no problem. Good crowds. The only problem was my daughter bought a Harper jersey. Since she had hit a HR at her tournament that day I allowed it. HR hitters get Bryce Harper jerseys. If she had not hit the HR, she would have settled for a t-shirt.
-
True. A 15 year contract is a very different analysis than a shorter deal. It’s probably my world view being somewhat more risk-averse than average, but I couldn’t turn down a deal that large when my future is tied to the health of ligaments, nerves, bones, etc that can be so fragile. One bad day and your value as an athlete can get crushed. But I hope Soto makes it work.
-
I went to the Cubs game on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised at the crowd size, there were also very few Mets fans. The crowd was very engaged. Another pleasant surprise was that security was much less than it was three years ago. It was about as tough to get into Wrigley than it was to get into O'Hare. No bag checks, a simple walk through the gate and phone scan.
