yep, those are the scenarios.

works for me. so presumably you win him at $55, putting you $54 over. You cut him and save $27 putting you $27 over. if someone starts an auction after the 24 hour waiver period, you'd then have two more days until he was cleared. or if people wait, you are locked out for ~4 weeks, unless you find at least another $28 to clear.
-
I think I've decided I'll just sit on an illegal roster until someone forces me to actively manage my team.

you could cut no one else...you would still be $25 over the cap and unable to set rosters until august
-
pretty much everyone except Wiers and Hulet. Ironically, you probably benefit the most from an immediate resolution.

why would I cut anyone other than Stanton? This is all moot. My original point was that I'm opposed to Stanton going at a steep discount. Several of you can roster him for $56 which is still a $20 bargain.

so my question is this - which owner in the league has more to gain by getting stanton auctioned this week than they do from punishing you for close to a month?
-
i am going to cut heyward if i win stanton, penidng some ongoing trade talks. but who benefits from seeing heyward get cut tomorrow instead of 20 days from now? teams trying to win do better by forcing you to be locked out. teams that are rebuilding are in no rush and want to see your cuts as much as mine...maybe more since you have to cut good players.
-
Also, I just did some math. I'm fairly confident I can win without ever changing my lineup again this season. It's just a matter of my guys staying healthy. If you're all committed to screwing me, I'll just keep my roster in an invalid state.

you're understating the benefits. If anybody could roster him without making cuts, then you might be right. But the secondary cuts to get him are bound to be interesting. Anybody with cash in hand should be eager to find out who's available. For instance, you're probably going to cut Heyward if you win Stanton.

if someone acts quickly...everyone else gets to bid anyway, so you get no advantage or benefit from being the one to start the auction. at least not for about 25 or so days, at which point someone has to act to keep you and cody out of the bidding.
-
the 30 days thing is tougher, for sure. but i am still just spelling out the truth, which is that everyone gains more by punishing you and making you wait. and unlike most prisoner's dilemma/tragedy of the commons type situations, no one gains that much by acting quickly in this case.
-
However, I fail to believe there's a scenario where 11 owners would all decide not to put Stanton up for auction. There's just too much to be gained for everybody to wait 30 days.

Once Brad released the $55-bid info, I assume that everyone who cared to could have done the same math and followed the same logic as Chad did to get to the same conclusion. If someone knows all this, and still thinks it would be better for them to win Jonk at $56, then cool, that's their prerogative. Even before Chad's posts here, it was obvious to me that it would benefit me if Brad did win him at $55.
-
As soon as Brad posted that he planned to bid $55 on Jonk (everyone please start calling him this), anyone could have looked at Brad's roster, and knowing the rules, realized very quickly that Brad would have been in some kind of real pickle if he won. Chad just took the time to detail those options, and did so for everyone to see.
-
I think so. And, for what it is worth, if anyone really has an issue with what I have proposed, I can back off and act in my own best interest (which may not change what I do, but I will stop talking about it).
-
Doesn't collusion have to be done in secret?
-
Errrrrr he has MORE to gain
-
Dr has way not to gain by hoarding that cash for the post-Stanton auctions
-
Which reminds me... I'm out on Stanton, because I'd have to make a gajillion cuts (or cut Moncada + a few others, which isn't worth it because I probably wouldn't keep Stanton at 55+). But I do have $24 of cap space and an extra roster spot. So if anyone wants to add cash, like a lot, all you have to do is send me a player.

one other note on the cuts - you have to have $1 in cap space for every roster spot open below 40. So if you cut down to 36 to clear $56 for stanton, you have to have at lest $4 free, or you won't be legal and will have to keep making cuts.
-
i assumed he would go for something in the $50's already. now I see an opportunity to punish Brad AND have an auction on stanton or stanton-like guys without Brad's participation.
-
And to Chad's point about discussing this publicly, that's the whole point. I don't want to win Stanton, but he's a $75-80 player. I shouldn't be at any risk of winning him for$55. Chad just wants to win him for $35 since he's the only owner who doesn't have to make a cut to afford him.

Yes. You can. If you win an auction (or make a trade) that leaves you over the cap, you are immediately blocked from a) editing your lineup, b) bidding in auctions, c) proposing or responding to trades...basically, you can't do anything but make cuts. Once you make the cuts to get your roster legal again, you can do those things again.
-
Correct.

Rules clarification: you can bid more than you have, right? You just have to cut ASAP if you win the bid.

FWIW, you could have bid $55 with no announcement and had the same impact. by announcing it, you have given the rest of us time to react. And discuss.
-
i am not asking the league to collude. I am explaining that the owner who has dominated this league for two straight years has made a potential tactical error and that, since he publicly discussed his strategy, others should publicly discuss theirs.
-
Why is the commissioner asking the league to collude?

also, if he DOES win and cut him, and we don't agree to wait close to 30 days to punish him, we get to start this over with brad not involved. I am happy to price enforce at $54. I can make that work if Brad backs off. And if he doesn't, we get to see him squirm.
-
BTW, his other option would be to just cut stanton again, and then wait for us to re-auction him, but he would be unable to start that auction for 30 days. and if we choose to make him wait, he goes 30 days unable to bid in auctions, make trades or set his lineup.
-
Bard's paths to $55 in cap room: Two of the four I mentioned before. One of those four, two of Kluber, Arrieta, Kipnis and Carpenter, and maybe one other guy. None of the four mentioned before, with all of Kluber, Arrieta, Carpenter, and Kipnis, plus at least one other guy. Everyone in this league is better off making him do that than they are owning a $56 stanton. Remember, you can use the $56 you would have cleared to bid on those guys.
-
That's incorrect.

I highly recommend we call Brad's bluff. If he wins Stanton at $55 (none of us bid over $54) he basically has to cut two of Stanton, trout, goldy and Kershaw. There are other paths for him but they're ugly.
-
even though nobody has the money, I'm placing a bid on Stanton for $55. You have a couple days to find a 56th dollar. Chad has an easy path to it. A couple others could match.
