Yeah, you just might not know you won or lost until you either check the transactions or find that your roster is invalid. Would be nice to at least get something to show the results of auctions in which you've participated, win or lose.
-
That's right. You just need to enter an amount you're comfortable with spending and hope it's enough
-
Its a blind auction, no? I haven't gotten involved with many FA auctions because I forget to check this for days on end, but basically if you outbid the next-highest bidder by $x, then you get the player for $x-1. Is that right?

Haha, I hate the FA bidding/etc. process in this. I try only to do it when I'm otherwise in a great mood. I don't know if there's some kind of email notification thing I failed to check or what, but the fact that I can be outbid without knowing I'm outbid without checking the page every two minutes is monstrous.
-
Ivan, you okay? Looks like you didn't even make a bid for Kyle Seager. Getting a little worried.
-
I’m looking to sell ahead of the deadline. Donaldson, Turner, Pham, Hoskins all available. Would listen on Nola too. Willing to include loans to make the money work.

11 (and a couple days ago it was 13) of my players being injured really puts the exclamation point on this failure of a season.

In your position, I think your best bet would essentially be to move the big expensive good guys for prospects/young MLBers, and eat the salary difference going to the other team, which gives you a big advantage in next year's auction (and the other team is going to have to make a ton of cuts just to get under the cap, let alone have money to spend). If someone's salary is too high, then ask for another player on a good deal to balance it out.
-
Back to the trade discussion: I don't have a ton of auction experience but don't think this league is very indicative of balanced pricing. Typically what kind of valuation should I expect from a $60+ player at the deadline? I've started looking to shop JD, Ramirez, and RPs but am struggling to even find a starting point given some of the prices. Any thoughts? I only ask because I don't want my lack of experience in these leagues to influence payouts for some.
-
Yeah that's basically why I lost interest in this format. Like, it's 100% on me for signing up for something where I didn't read the rules closely and that's my bad, but just a resounding meh from me. Woo, relievers. (And before anyone lobbies a sour grapes claim, I had the same feeling back when I was around fourth and before my entire roster less four guys got hurt.)
-
5.67 points in 0.1 innings from my latest cheap acquisition. Sure do love relievers.
-
I'm not offended. Andujar, Mikolas, Pollock, Cain, Freeland, and Hicks all looked like strong candidates for 3+ WAR to me. Most of my "expensive" guys sucked. It happens. The incredible deals I got besides them are the reason I've sort of kept up on a rate basis.
-
Also, if someone sent me a compelling deal for Wander Franco that would push me over the hump, I'd be all for it. Scherzer's balky back is making me concerned I won't get there.

I always found your strategy interesting...on one hand, yes, you came away with awesome flexibility (and I wish I'd saved to get some of the bullpen deals you got late), but I remember looking at your roster in March and thinking (don't take this as me being an asshole, which I'm not) "does he have a 3+ WAR guy on this team?" Thinking next year you'll definitely be able to afford one!
As we're mostly all new to this, I'm sure I'll have some tough decisions to make in the offseason.

By the way, there is more to it than opportunity cost for not using the whole cap space. When every player's salary goes up in the offseason and there are some good players available for auction, the teams that have a good core for cheap will be better off than the teams that have a better roster for the maximum price.
-
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make by asking "why would we care about money?" other than exactly the point I was making: that nobody cares about money. As far as how far back I am... it's 950. Considering the huge gap in innings, I'm still in the competition. Not with a good chance at 1st, but with a good chance to finish well.
-
Trades aren't so difficult to make, as long as needs and surpluses match up. That's not going to happen a whole lot in a 12-person fantasy league. And why would we care about money? As long as our teams are cap-compliant, there is only opportunity cost in not using the full allotment. If I was 10k points out, I'd be looking for ways to add players that'd help me in the future, but that's just me.

Thanks for the reminder, but I don't think it matters. Getting a trade done mid-season has proven to be basically impossible. As I mentioned before, nobody cares about money, so all that's left are points. Why trade points for points? I have money, I want points, but nobody's going to give those up now.
-
Also guys, keep in mind that the trade deadline is 8/31, a month after real life trade deadline.
-
He's also going to have to start leaving pitchers on the bench or just forfeit pitching points at the end of the season. Currently on pace for 160 IP too many. That's basically like 3/5 of a month of no pitching once it runs out. I do think it's wise to try and squeeze more innings on the front end of the season just because pitchers wear down and weird things happen. But at some point the IP will go away.
-
Don't worry fellas. I have a feeling I'm about to tumble into the lower spots. My team is running out of gas, especially my pitchers. Who we all need to worry about is "Snitker Sets My lineups". He's been flying up the rankings.

I feel more akin to the Phillies-- treading water but will ultimately disappoint.

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing the banner at the top of the ottoneu page that says "Need help with McKay or Lorenzen?" might have something useful.
-
What am I supposed to do with Brendan McKay? He's listed as a 1B/SP, and he's making starts as a pitcher. But the game won't let me start him as a pitcher and carries him in my player section.
-
No, not TLS...flip...
-
If you insist. Should you change your mind, just let me know.
-
Eh, don't bother (unless as a symbolic gesture, I guess). I'm not going anywhere for multiple reasons and I'm not planning on cutting him as the same symbolic gesture.
-
Someone brought this up in another league, but would you guys be cool making Skaggs a penalty free cut? Feel like the situation kinda warrants it.
-
Roy Williams has an old adage of "don't look at the score before halftime," and I finally broke down and took a look today. Few things:
(1) There are 102 points separating 1st and 5th now
(2) Snitker Sets My Lineups is hard-chargin'-- ranking 1st in 7 and 30 day points!
(3) We'll Probably Suck is the best team in rate basis points for batting and pitching, Bartolo's Colon is second in each. Get them innings up, Suck!

Yeah, I was reading that just now. Insane stuff. Scary when a 27 year old athlete dies suddenly. I'm sitting here as an overweight 38 year old and thinking I need to hit the gym...
-
Holy shit, Tyler Skaggs just died...
-
Considering the massive number of innings you've already used, do you really want to start 6 pitchers in one day, even if you could?
-
lol, of course I've managed to amass 6 starting pitchers that all start on the same day. I guess I'll be going feast or famine for pitching points.
-
8 P/IP for 170 innings seems like something that is both worth quite a bit of money and impossible to find on the FA page. That's what I got for spending money on relievers. No regrets there.
-
Yay, picking up Mike Leake so he can give up 5 homers in his next start.
-
From my personal experience in both of the leagues, it's far better to spend money on non pitchers, especially non relievers. High performing relievers can almost always be found on the FA page, but that's true for almost no other position. Because I'm still picking up guys of some value now as free agents, but only at pitcher.
-
I agree. The offseason forces people to care about such things. If we had 12 players who we knew would care about 2 seasons from now, maybe having good salaries would mean something. At the moment, only production matters, which should effectively shut down the season for me. I'll go into the offseason with more than $50 free, guaranteed. Could even get to $100. All my "expensive" guys sucked. Mikolas, Hicks, Andujar, Cain, etc.
-
I'm guessing it will start to balance out in subsequent years, just because you eventually have to cut those guys. Everyone's roster is going to cost AT LEAST $80 more, so those top tier guys will start to get re-distributed and when the entire league has less to spend, the salaries will start to come down. That first day of the draft was just insane.
-
DUF, that last way to use money is the only one that means anything. There are almost endless players just above replacement level, so having the money to win in-season auctions is meaningless past about $10. I can't send money to other teams in trades, because again, they don't care what they're spending. They just want production. The offseason auction, in which I have to outbid the previous owner significantly, is the only way to use the money.
-
For example, Ronald McDonaldson has several objectively overpriced players. Bryce Harper has not been worth $55 (few players are, since that's 5.5 times the average salary, or about the price for 11 WAR, maybe a little less). But only one of those overpriced players is doing actually badly (Chris Archer). So his team is good. Does it have much flexibility? No. And he doesn't care because that doesn't matter when nobody in the league cares what they're spending.
-
The cap space will be helpful for the teams if/when they decide to "rebuild". You can send money in trades to contending teams for young players/prospects and then you'll be in a better position to pounce on the waiver/auction guys in season, and you'll also have the best shot at picking up the cap casualties for next season.
-
I mean sure, you need a good $10 free to pick up a FA every now and then. But having an average team for less-than-average payroll just means you have an average team. There's no advantage to having a super cheap competitive team as opposed to adding Mike Trout for a bazillion dollars.
-
One thing I didn't fully realize during the draft was that ensuring you are not saddled with terrible prices for decent/good players is not a very effective strategy like it is in real baseball. I made sure I would have several cheap, very good players mixed with some cheap, terrible players and I figured I'd just cut the ones who turned out badly. This suddenly didn't make sense when I realized that having $50 of cap free halfway through the season doesn't help.
-

Eh my team is so injured that the last two guys I picked up as injury replacements got injured the next game so just ride it out and who knows. Shrug.
