So we'll go through with arb stuff, then I believe either 12/1 or 12/31 (pretty sure it's 12/31) is the keeper deadline. It will show up at the top of the home page once arb is over, so once I know for sure I'll post here to remind everyone. So you CAN'T make cuts until after arb is over, but I believe you'll have between 11/15-12/31 to figure out who you want to keep. I'd recommend using the roster organizer to visualize what you want to do, then use all the time you can to actually choose.
-
So arbitration is now open through November 14th. Do rosters unlock then in order to make cuts or is another tool added to select keepers at that point?
-
The best example I have is from my other league, where I traded for $1 Josh Donaldson in 2013 (when he came with catcher eligibility!), and then he put up a 147 wRC+. He was raised to $3 before the next season (and lost his C eligibility), but obviously you want the owner of that player paying a lot more than that for the guy. Just about every team added arb dollars to Donaldson that year. I think he went from $1 to $44 in like 3 seasons. But you'll know final salaries before the keeper deadline
-
So you don't have to give $3 to each team in the league. (obviously, you don't have enough money to do that) So a lot of people tend to target the top teams (gulp) as the recipients of the full $3, and maybe you only put $1 on the teams you feel are less threatening. You can spread it around within each team too. (ie. giving $1 to 3 separate players, or any other combo that maxes out at $3). I tend to use the money mostly on making the bargain salaries a little closer to being fair.
-
Each team gets $25 that they can use to allocate to other teams' players across the league. The most you can assign to one player/team is $3. In general, you want to use this to hike up the prices of guys who are on bargains, but you can get strategic with it as well. You may think that a certain player is right on the expensive edge of the cut/keep line, but you want them to hit FA. Maybe you put your dollars there and make the keeper decision a little tougher.
-
Correct, rosters are now locked, outside of a "roster organizer" which is just for your own planning purposes. Looks like salaries have already gone through their usual $1/$2 increases, so that should be reflected on the planning page. Arbitration is basically a round of voting throughout the league. I'm running out of characters so I'll explain on the next post.
-
It appears rosters are locked, assuming we cannot cut players right now?
And I don't have time to read it all today and don't want to forget, but arbitration basically = players' salaries increase by $1 year over year?

In the name of fairness, even if you haven't decided on whether or not you'll be participating next season, please put forth a good faith effort in the arbitration session that's upcoming. Since it's a dynasty league, it's important that we keep everything consistent value-wise for future seasons, even if you're not planning on being part of those seasons. Thanks, y'all!

I'm in for year 2 as well.
-
Yeah I made a couple really careless "go for it" trades right before the deadline. Ramos was meh, but still mostly better than my other catching options. And I also traded for a fairly expensive Aaron Nola and I think I only started him once after the trade. I've come up just short a couple times in my other league, I just wasn't going to let it happen. Even though I mostly sabotaged myself.
-
I want to note that I did everything I could to sabotage our eventual winner. I took $1 DJ LeMahieu off his hands (for Osuna, who wasn't bad) and traded him Wilson Ramos in a separate trade late in the season, who was a complete albatross after the trade. And he still beat us.

That's a good idea, Ivan. I tried to do something like that, but more based on the format itself rather than the relationship between actual baseball and ottoneu. (I'm not quite as qualified to do that) I can also look into changing certain things scoring-wise, though I'm not exactly sure how flexible Ottoneu is with that. I'm guessing not very flexible, but maybe.
-
I'm in for next season for sure, money or no money. But I can tell you for sure that Punny Name Goes Here will need a new owner for next year.
-
I'm in, don't care about money or not money, though for my own certitude I'm going to write up a lessons learned thing and link it here, because there are certain things (that I've complained about before) between how baseball works and how this format works that don't align and make for some really basic cheat sheet-type things that the sleep-deprived among us (me) might benefit from putting down in explicit form.
-
I'm in for year 2, to see a full season through if nothing else. On the fence on the money side of things beyond league fees. Not a big gambler and when you look at the high cost guys who fell flat plus untimely injuries it really shows how much of a gamble fantasy is.
-
I’m in for year 2.
-
I'm in for season 2. Would be willing to throw money in, and would be willing to do for free again.
-
I'm definitely down to run it back and see if I can defend. I feel my victory is somewhat tainted by being the only one with experience, but I think I did just get lucky on a few gambles that paid off. Would be down for putting some money on it as well, especially now that everyone here has their feet wet. I'll plan on sending out some emails if I don't hear from everyone here on whether they're in or out for year 2.
-
I'm a hard maybe right now-- would definitely be more inclined to play with some money on the line, it became a hassle with my work schedule to set lineups everyday.

I'm in of course. I might even be willing to put something on the line now that I know how this stuff works.

So commish...I guess we need a roll call for who's in for season 2? If we have to look for a replacement or two, we would need to let them do their arbitration dollars. Otherwise we have a real mess on our hands.

That was a lot of fun, especially at the end. Losing 13 games by my middle infield really hurts! Congrats to DUF. Should be a fun offseason
-
Agreed. Good season all! I couldn't hang on at the end for a 3rd place finish. Now comes the part I'm looking forward to. :)
-
I was really sweating it out there these last few days! Definitely will have some good players coming off the roster, unfortunately.
-
I look forward to obtaining a third of each of your players should we continue. :)

Yeah, I mainly just scroll down to the IP projections for pitcher start/sit stuff, and I watch the GP projections for catchers just because they sit a lot and sometimes it makes sense to play two if you have the space. I didn't really start paying attention to the rest until it was too late, I guess.
-
Managing games played became a bigger headache than I thought it would earlier in the season. Certainly something I will have to watch better next year. Not every slot has to be filled with an active player each day Jobu! LOL.
-
I noticed that and thought that I might've been doing something wrong. It's going to be a tough climb in this last week
-
Well. I am suddenly out of OF games. Whoopsies. Hopefully 264 points is enough of a cushion!
-
I think it's probably 1) easier for the developer to leave it that way and 2) makes sure that the values already set by the league stay closer than they would by starting everything over. There will be MUCH less money to spend in the year 2 draft, so I think they want to avoid situations where the best/most expensive players in the format don't end up going for half their value because only a couple teams are bidding.
-
It's slightly weird to me that players would start at half their former price in the auction when nobody's still paying the other half, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Half of (their original salary plus $2 plus arb) should be a good price for any player that stayed on their owner's team all season.

And Jobu re: cuts. The only real "benefit" of reducing your cap penalties from this point through the rest of the season would be to clear up money for any in-season auctions the rest of the way. Reducing your cap penalty number now will have no effect on off-season cap. But if you are currently capped out, but reduce your penalty number now by re-auctioning/cutting, then maybe you add a 60-day guy or someone you want for next year with money you may not have had.
-
And regarding the auction starting costs: I'm almost positive that draft auctions for cut players will start at half their cut price, just like in-season auctions. So if someone makes a postseason cut of a $10 player, their bidding in the draft will start at $5.
-
KMDS, you're pretty spot on there with your first post. Regarding your question, the penalty-free cuts will happen before the draft. I'm not sure the exact date that your roster has to be legal/valid, but I'll check on that. Definitely before the draft though. I don't believe you can make your roster illegal/invalid DURING the draft. (ie. you can't roster more than 40 or exceed the cap and THEN make cuts) Anyone cut after the draft would be subject to the in-season penalties.
-
I second that auction and penalty question. It seems like the "re-auction and cut" process is kind of pointless at this point in the season, no? Or, should I still be bidding and cutting players that will save me $1 to $2?
-
Also, I assume that means all the cut players would start at $1 in the auction and nobody would have an advantage in getting them.

The rules aren't clear on this stuff, but I assume then that the process is: 1) The salaries go up by $1 or $2. 2) We assign arbitration dollars ($1 to $3 per team, $25 total. 3) Everyone's loans and penalties go to $0 and all cuts are penalty free until the draft. 4) The draft. So my remaining question is: do we have to make a bunch of roster cuts during step 3 so we have roster space during the draft? If we have 40 players, we can't draft and then cut?

5 HR in one inning? LMAOO, yikes.
-
Mike Fiers with -58 points in 1 IP might be the worst single game score of the season.
-
And I believe penalties and caps reset as soon as the season ends.
-
That's correct. And you'll be able to cut players without a penalty. Pretty sure the salaries will go up first ($1 for guys with no MLB svc time, $2 for guys w/ MLB svc time), then we'll do allocation (each team gets $25 to distribute across the league to tack onto other teams players), and then you go through cuts. So you'll know their final 2020 cost before you have to decide on cuts.
-
Cap penalties and loans both go to $0 before the next draft, right?

The salary of all my current players is $229, which is clearly too dang high. Time to make some shrewd trades. This statement endorsed by Derek Jeter.

$30 a month if you post your pick in a separate comment rather than a reply.
-
As someone who's never participated in the WPA game... Yes.
-
So you're saying I should start charging $20 a month for people to play WPA?
-
It's where the rawness of the format really shows, for sure. And it's even come a looooooong way from when I started like 5 years ago. I think the comment section WPA game has more structure to it than the ottoneu interface/UX used to have. It used to just be a thing that Niv Shah ran in his free time and there weren't too many users, but I think it's gained enough traction (especially now that they do a football version) that there's actually a team dedicated to making it better now.
-
Yeah, that's kind of my issue with it... I mean it's generally fine, especially for bigger-ticket ones, but given that (as I've noted before), so much of this hinges on "pick the reliever" and the real price to pay for those guys is $1 or maybe $2... yeah. Like, it's fine, I'm not indicting it as some kind of massive format flaw, it's just not something I like.
