I do have similar concerns about Bregman, part of why I'm glad it's a short term deal with high AAV instead of a 6-year deal. I still think he can be good enough to make it not a stupid signing.
-
Yet you don't have similar concerns for Bregman whose xwOBA has slid to just a tick over major league average? (.319 vs .315) which puts him at 12th among 3B last year.

Not saying Judge should be paid over $100 million; $11 million is about what it costs to buy 1 WAR from the free agent market. RE Burnes: I said showed red flags, not bad results. His strikeout rate declined to 23.1%, still not terrible but down 2.4% from 2024, 7.4% from 2023, and 12.5% from 2022. I still think he will most likely be great for at least the next couple seasons. Again, not a knock on Burnes just saying that contract has plenty of risk of being bad as well.
-
$11 million per 1 WAR??? So Judge should be paid over $100m/yr?

"I mean is signing Burnes (a 30 year-old pitcher who showed some real red flags last season)" You mean Burnes 191 IP and 2.91 ERA?

I have to agree with Racob, the contracts are getting bigger and bigger and they are getting handed to everyone it feels like, Players are going to start expecting a very large check even if they are just mediocre. Also moving Devers to DH seems like a no brainer let the Gold Glover play third and let the silver slugger hit!
-
So was Trevor Story before he signed the 6 year deal with Boston! I do like that the contract is short term, but I dont understand the 2 years of player options. If Bregman lives up to the contract, he will just exit after a year and resign for more or elsewhere. The player option limits the ceiling
-
Bregman is probably still around a 3-4 WAR player for the next couple of years. Right now the market value for 1 WAR is considered about $11 million. I just don't think this signing is nearly as stupid as you think it is, Winnetka.
-
I think there is a money laundering, insider trading, or real estate explanation for Steve Cohen's 8 figure yearly loss on the Mets. Afterall, he is the inspiration for Billions Bobby Axelrod. I don't believe someone that is worth 20 billion dollars from trading would be so reckless financially stupid
-
I mean is signing Burnes (a 30 year-old pitcher who showed some real red flags last season) to a 6-year $210 million deal really that much smarter? Pete would've likely required a large contract as well (I'm not sure he would've gone elsewhere for the contract the Mets gave him) and is also 30 and likely won't age well. This is less me defending the Bregman contract and more that I don't think those guys would've necessarily been money better spent.
-
Btw, Pecota projected standings still has the Red Sox finishing in last place. I don't agree with it, as I think the Red Sox are definitely better than the Blue Jays but I'm not sure they are better than the Rays. Bregman benefited from the whole trash can cheating scandal as evidenced by his plummeting production since. Stupid, stupid move.

Steve Cohen is worth over $20 billion, I don't think he cares if the Mets don't make him money. The Mets losing $400 Million for Cohen is pretty much equivalent to the amount I spend playing fantasy baseball comparatively.
-
I was just starting to like the Red Sox as I felt they were building a franchise the right way with great scouting, player development and shrewd free agent signings. Don't these executives learn their lessons? Arenado was much more highly regarded than Bregman and look what happened. Yes it is only for three years, but why not spend that money on Burnes. Heck Pete Alonso would have made more sense for the Red Sox.

So, most sports teams aren't actually designed to make money. It's frequently better for these billionaires if they "lose" money, which is what JPM will see reported. Also, players are severely underpaid earlier in their careers, so it has to get made up later by these kind of contracts.
-
I think contracts like this are terrible for baseball. $40m/yr for an average hitting major league qualifier. In addition, his numbers are trending downward and he is on the wrong side of 30. Why are these owners so willing to blow money like this. I just read a comprehensive report by JPM, these teams don't make that much. Some lose quite a bit. The Mets lost $400m in 2022-2023 which is about what I predicted. In 2022 their payroll alone nearly equaled all of the Mets operating revenues.

I also agree that Devers should be moved to DH, let Bregman (a gold glove last year) stay at 3rd and leave 2nd open for Kampbell. They need to just trade Yoshida even if it means eating most of his contract. Also one injury (looking at you Story) and suddenly all these problems are mostly solved.
-
I don't disagree. $40 million a year is too much, however I am much happier with that deal than if it was long term. I wouldn't like the deal as much if it was what the Tigers offered of 6 years and $171.5 million. I mostly care that the Red Sox are finally showing a willingness to spend but the short term helps mitigate risk.
-
Winnetka Twins, I interpreted that as the diplomatic public-facing response for now, but there's gotta be more moves coming. Anthony is ready too! They need to do a 3-for-1 package deal or something.
-
So I just read that Bregman might be playing 2B??? WTH?? Devers is a lousy 3B, I expected either Devers or Casas would move to DH. I'm very disappointed in the Red Sox with this move. I was excited to see Campbell and Anthony play this year.

I like Chipmunks more measured response. Bregman is a "good" but not "great" bad. I'll add that he is also a good but not great fielding 3B. Bregman is trending towards average and I can't help but think of Nolan Arenado. $40m/yr is one of the most absurd salaries relative to a player's value yet. I was literally praying for the Cubs don't sign him. The guy who I'm on the phone with all day is a big Tiger's fan, he was doing the same.

I also was surprised but very excited when i got the Notification! Like my brother said he comes with a good bat and will definitely help the team so no complaints from me. Going to be allot of fun watching my Red Sox this year!
-
It surprised me, but I love it. Bregman is still a great bat and will definitely improve the team that should be able to compete. It's a huge AAV, but I prefer that than if they had given him a 5+ year contract. The main thing I don't like is it blocking the path to Kristian Campbell more.
-
Alright Squirrels and Chipmunks, tell us how you feel about Bregman's contract 3yrs $120m.

Also everyone welcome to the league the new owner for Exeter Velos (now the Angry Chipmunks) my brother Eli! This is his first Ottoneu league, though he is a much better real life baseball player than I have ever been!
-
Looking for offers for Soto if anyone is interested
-
Sorry to see you go Exeter. Feel free to come back next year if you can find the time.

I have someone that can take over the team once it's abandoned.
-
Hey everybody, I'm sorry that I did not make this decision earlier, but I need to bow out of this league. I've had a lot of fun, but I've struggled to find the time or motivation this month to even set up my cuts and engage in trade talks, and my year ahead is only getting busier. Hopefully, I've left the team in a solid starting point for the next owner. Winnetka, please abandon my team. Thanks all for the good times and competition.
-
That is 7pm cst. Should have notated pst.
-
I just reread the comments and saw that Exeter suggested Wednesday, February 26. That seems to work based from the comments thus far. Iβm going to set it for 7p.m., the time and date is not set in stone and obviously can be easily changed.
-
Sorry to be late with this one. Tuesdays are the weekday I'm almost never free for. I can do any other weekday night in February but the 14th or the 28th.
-
Either is good for me

Thanks! Personally, I'm not available the evenings of March 16th or March 20th. March 11th and March 23rd are rough but I can do it on the later side (after 9 EST).
-
Can you guys start posting on what dates and times that DON'T work for you on a draft date?
-
I'm in need of starting pitching if anyone wants to talk trades!
-
We did late February last year, and that seemed to work well. Not so early that trade momentum runs crazy but not too late that it overlaps with other drafts in March. We did it on a Wednesday night last year, so I'll suggest Feb. 26.
-
Yeah that'll sneak up on us.
-
Cubs Dodgers play March 18 so we should schedule an auction soon.
-
Ryan Helsey is available for a good pitcher or starting bat.
