To be clear, is it a no illegal roster at any time, or 48 hour grace period rule?
-
Very fair. Thanks for working through it. It's really good for the league to be on the same page.

Understood. I made my cuts, and this rule will be enforced as such going forward

The grace period in the Champs League was because some owners brought up things like illness, wife having a baby, international travel, stuff like that. So it's fine to have a grace period, but in that league the grace period was not at all intended to allow an owner to knowingly sit on an illegal roster.

I agree there needs to be a grace period. It would be silly to require every owner to make pre-cuts in anticipation of winning an auction. 48 hours seems reasonable to me. And it's not like he gets a "free pass" during that time. He can't make last minute lineup changes.
-
In this situation, SABR has made two cuts already and knows he's over the limit, so in my opinion it would be better to avoid controversy and just make whatever additional cuts are needed to get your team legal. This issue caused a lot of frustration in the Champs League and it will here as well. It's good for the league to talk about a rule, but it doesn't seem very good for the commish to be the one pushing the boundaries.

In Champs there was a strong sentiment toward requiring rosters to be legal at all times, but the commish settled on 48 hour grace period in case an owner had things going on in life where they were away from Ottoneu or unaware that their team was over the limit. There was definitely the intent to not allow a team to gain an advantage by going over the limit and then waiting to see what happens.

c. At no time should a team willingly go over roster and salary cap limits. If a team knowingly does this, they will face penalties at the discretion of their league's commissioner.
So I guess we should have a rule in place to satisfy everyone, right? Whatever that rule may be.
-
@YoungAndHopeless, you were not the only team I contacted about Rule 1a, and it was actually brought to my attention by another member in this league. What we discussed was whether or not having 5 RP satisfies Rule 1a. After some debate on Slack, I decided to let it pass.

Guys, I'm not evil and I'm not trying to cheat. If we could get some more activity on Slack, we could take votes on these issues and set precedence for our league charter. To my knowledge, in the champs league you are allowed 48 hours to make your roster right again. I typically like to use their rules as a general guideline.

What is this conversation? I've been at Ottonue a long time and always go over budget and make cuts. Basically he chose to have choo over Ellsbury and wainwright. What's the big deal? Everyone needs to take a chill in this league. Goodness! Dee Gordon just got suspended for 80 games and you all are getting your panties in a bunch over choo? 😜

And you guys locked me out of the draft for leaving for 30 minutes...throwing stones in glass houses, man.
-
The thing is, I think I would have had to cut a player to get under cap as well.
-
And what's the 4 RP controversy?
-
Is that a rule? I've definitely been guilty of that then. So in theory, we should cut before we bid?
-
Bidding such an amount that not only requires you to cut players, but for the players to need to be either claimed or re-auctioned is pretty clearly violating Rule 1c.
-
The right move is probably to award Choo to Crooklyn for $17 (WTF's bid + $1) and add back Waino and Jacoby

Yeah he called me out for having only 4 RPs, but now he does crap as the 1st place team? #whoyoucrapping? I'll post a convo image on slack
-
Incorrect. He gets points but can't do anything (set lineups, trade) until he cuts to get valid
-
You can't accumulate points until your roster valid, correct?
-
Negative Cap Space... thats cheating

I'd be just as willing to use my space to buy a bad contract, but I doubt anyone would give me anything additional for creating space for them
-
I've only been operating that way in these leagues because that's what everyone else has done (1st yr in Otto) it does seem silly as people don't gain anything from saving cap space. I'm curious why it was ever allowed in the first place. Having a hard cap restricts player movement during the year if everyone is already at 370+ spent
-
Thanks Eli. Those are great examples. So we could think of a year of Stanton's salary in Ottoneu as analagous to several of years of a 1/3 of Arod. If anything, it would be less of a cash transfer in the Stanton case. Interesting. I think I'm convinced.

If Votto, Cano, or Miggy were moved today, surely those deals would be accompanied by cash, even though the players are still good
-
@Crooklyn--the A-Rod to NYY deal involved TEX agreeing to pay ~1/3 of the remaining deal. Other recent deals that involved big $ accompanying the players were Adrian Gonzalez to LAD and Fielder to TEX.
-
No. For the reasons in my previous answer, I'm not saying it's the same as Ottoneu. I'm just saying that's the analogy I see with salaries in MLB. Big market teams in contention take on contracts from smaller market teams who don't want to pay them.

Like I said, I'm not saying I wouldn't consider being on either side of this trade. It just occurred to me that this type of deal is a particular quirk of Ottoneu and was curious if there was a real life example.

The Yankees trade their best players and pay a year of their salary when doing so?

The Yankees take on good players at the deadline every year. Part of the difference in Ottoneu is the combination of a salary cap and a greater ability to rebuild a lot more quickly than MLB teams can.

It's one thing for the Phillies let's say to consider paying another team to take Howard, but paying another team to take your best player (regardless of the return) seems weird to me. I'm curious what others' perspectives are on this.
-
Out of curiosity, is there a real life equivalent of MLB teams taking on parts of contracts for *good* players?
-
I can't say I'm a fan of trades with huge loans. That said, for whatever reason that's how Ottoneu is set up and I'd be lying if I said I didn't see the appeal on both sides of the deal.
-
can't we at least get to may before bullshit trades
