Looking to move Arenado for Solid pitching
-
Why would a guy go for $7 when they could’ve been claimed for $5 two days earlier?

I’d move Kjerstad for a solid OF or RP

Looking for a solid outfielder and I have some cap space so I could take a larger contract if needed

It seems reasonable to me that the commissioner reach out to players who have an illegal roster for more than 24 hours, which is the length of our trade waiting period.

@4 days -- I wasn't concerned about the state of anyone's roster at the moment. I was just raising a general question as to what we want our league policy to be. The Ottoneu policy, as I cited, is overly strict, IMO. Under that policy, you would need to have an open roster spot even to re-auction your players, which seems unreasonable.

Oh no
-
Correct. That is what you're doing. The other people are discussing things. Just because you don't like those discussions doesn't mean they shouldn't happen. So again, either add to the conversation or stfu. Otherwise, you'll be blocked from the board.

There's is no conversation. It's just bitching about nothing

The board is there for people to discuss things. Not to bitch about people discussing things. If you don't like it, turn off notifications. Otherwise, quietly read and move on. Whining about it does nothing to further any conversations.

Please, and I say this with the utmost respect, shut up. You're adding nothing to the conversation.

And just like that there is nothing to bitch about. What's next?

I’ve also got Luis Garcia who should be on 60 day, but hasn’t been placed on anything yet. He is expected back in the second half of the season, so I’m waiting on his designation as well. Should I wait to bid on auctions until I have clarity on that? Nothing I’ve read gives any detail other than “is on track to return in the second half of the 2024 season”
-
Sorry about going over roster limit. I won an auction yesterday afternoon and was waiting to see what IL Walker Beuhler would go on. Dodgers had been vague if it was delayed start ie August or June on Beuhler. They put him on 15 day, so I’ve got my answer.
-
If we choose to do so at our discretion, that is.

Very well — Rule I.c states, “At no time shall a team willingly go over roster and salary cap limits. If a team knowingly does this, they will face penalties at the discretion of their league's commissioner.” There is no mention of a grace period, so it sounds like you are suggesting that the other commissioner and I devise some arbitrary punishment and impose said punishment on the two teams that are currently in violation of this rule?

Thinking to yourself is a good thing. As co commissioner why don't you remind the league of the rules. Cut and paste. The rules aren't going to change. So don't ask how we are going to handle that situation when the rules are pretty clear about exactly how it's handled.
-
@Whine — there is a penalty, but there is also a platform-wide guideline/policy which recommends that players try not to have an illegal roster any longer than is absolutely necessary.

When I see an illegal roster, I think to myself, “Hey, have we adequately ensured that everyone is familiar with how the league handles illegal rosters?” and, perhaps more importantly, “Do we have a clear policy on how to handle illegal rosters?“

I’m not being critical of anyone in particular, I’m just trying to establish rules/norms that we can apply to the upcoming season. That is, after all, kind of the commissioner’s job (co-commissioner, in this case) — to facilitate the development, dissemination, and enforcement of league policies.

The other 'illegal' roster is waiting for a trade to be processed. There is penalty for having an illegal roster, right? That owner can't make any roster moves until it's cleared up. So...let's just follow the rules instead of seeing aliens. Deep breaths.
-
I don’t remember if we had a formal rule last year, but I remember thinking about reaching out to folks after maybe 48 hours of having an illegal roster unless they had a pending trade which was going to bring their roster back within the rules.

What happened to you guys over the winter? No one is breaking any rules. You guys are looking for ghosts. Disagree with something? Send a message to Niv. Otherwise.... Just play the game. It's unreal. Some of you have sent me the most insane trade proposals but are now whining because someone actually accepted one. Now we're talking about illegal rosters. The move that made his roster illegal happened two hours ago and it's the middle of the night.
-
Normally I might agree, but this year there is like a week between opening “opening day” and Opening Day. It can happen during that time. Additionally, there are a lot of injured guys right now for whom it’s not clear if they will end up on the 15 or 60 day IL.

I would say "even if they're just waiting on a 60 day IL placement" is a little too far--if someone's an obvious preseason 60 day guy who just hasn't been put there yet, I don't think the owner should be punished for that MLB team's weirdness (i.e. no idea why Rangers haven't 60 day'd Tyler Mahle yet)
-
We currently have two teams over the roster limit (as of today, so nothing nefarious there) and could have a few more depending on how the current auctions shake out.

What do we want to do with illegal rosters in the layoff between the games in S. Korea and the full opening day? I don't think we want teams carrying extra players/salary even if they are just waiting for a player to be placed on the 60 day IL or something.

@PNW - I think in that case the argument would be that it’s a totally unfair trade that people would veto. That’s not what I’m saying here. My general point is it’s the principal of offering nothing for something to skip the waiver process. I’m not making a value judgment on whether the return was fair for either side, that’s a different argument. It’s a fairness question for the whole league. I’m happy to drop it though, I think it’s been settled. I’m looking forward to the season starting!

Both teams did give up something -- I gave up a player and the other team gave up a roster spot and $6 in cap space. Now, if I had included a loan and taken an utterly useless player back in return, then I think you'd have a valid argument.

@GF Chaunceys - I agree with that point as well. Even less of a potential issue given the circumstances and the fact that it’s preseason.

I’m ok that everyone doesn’t agree with that, and again, I don’t think anyone got hosed in this situation. My opinion is just that the general rule of thumb shouldn’t allow it. But that’s just my opinion, and if the rest of the league doesn’t agree I think that’s ok. It sounds like it doesn’t usually create any issues in other leagues, which is great. I trust people will be fair and it likely won’t happen often anyway.

While I don't agree in general, I certainly think it's even less of an issue at this point in the season when the waiver wire is via random selection, as there is no "worse" teams as of now.

I get what you’re saying. But the waiver rules are intended to keep things more fair in general. It gives every team 24 hours to bid, which teams didn’t have in this case (not saying anyone else would have). It also ensures the team giving up the player can’t just pick a team to give him to (not saying you would have, but someone could). Also, IMO, all trades should involve both sides giving up something. Even if the other side only gives up $1 to skip the waiver line, at least it’s something.

@Name TBD - Those "worse" teams had the same opportunity to send me a trade request. Had I received more than one request to trade Kirk for "nothing," I likely would have just cut him and let those teams duke it out on waivers. As I only received one offer...

Cool

I get why you would trade a player for nothing, and I see the benefit to both sides. My main thing is exactly how you advertised it… jump the waiver line to get him. I’m not sure that’s in the spirit of the trade/waiver process. But I totally get I’m in the minority on that one. Not accusing anyone of anything bad, just that if it becomes common it could circumvent the waiver process that helps worse teams. As a one-off it’s not a big deal and I’m good. Excited for the season!

is this a sewing circle?

PCE was here last year, and understands the system of waiving players. Also possible that he wants to open up cap space to claim Cole.
GF Chaunceys on

For about the same reasons, I vetoed the trade also
-
For that reason, and because it looks to me like PCE is new to ottoneu (account created in January), I vetoed the trade. If anyting, it will give the PCE owner a chance to reconsider. It was actually the first trade I've ever vetoed in my fantasy career.
-
I could neve accuse anyone of collusion, just think maybe the PCE owner didn't realize he can get pretty close to that money ($10) right away without having to give away Skubal. And they'll get the other $10 if someone picks up Javier or another $5 if Javier is still on the wire in 30 days and they reauction and cut. The cash that Full Throttle gave up can be easily recovered through the same mechanism - they can actually make a nice profit if they now cut Javier and someone picks him up at $20!
-
Exactly, I gave you 6$ more on your cap and an open spot on roster, you saved the 3$ cap penalty if you would of cut, these trades don't happen often in Ottoneu, maybe tht's why it caused questions marks, but I really don,t see the fuss about it. I'm much more concerned about the other trade of Skubal and Valdez for Bello and Singer
-
That's where I'm at, too, W&B. It's not up to me to negotiate trades for owners. If there's no reason to believe collusion, and there's not, I vote "approve" on every trade.

IRL, dozens of players per season are traded for nothing but cash considerations, which is basically what happened here. Had I waved Kirk, I would’ve been running the risk that he would go unclaimed, which would have left me with a $3 cap penalty.

I didn’t trade Kirk for “nothing.” I traded him for a guaranteed $6 in cap space plus an open roster spot.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, including these two owners. If we're the trading deadline and these guys were friends or something, then that would be curious. But preseason? Who knows the value of these guys right now? All based upon projections. And picking up $13 in cap room is legit.
-
Most people don't vote on trades, so unlikely anything will happen - but it's an option if you feel strongly about it.

Yeah that's a weird one. Javier would get him back $10 right away plus $5 in a month, and Skubal went over $30 in most auctions where he was available this offseason, tons of value to give up for Bello.
-
My guess is having to pay to get off of Javier's salary. $20 for a guy worth maybe $5 (at most). It's a lot to give up, but if you believe in Bello, it's justifiable. The option is there to vote against it, though.
