Both teams did give up something -- I gave up a player and the other team gave up a roster spot and $6 in cap space. Now, if I had included a loan and taken an utterly useless player back in return, then I think you'd have a valid argument.

@GF Chaunceys - I agree with that point as well. Even less of a potential issue given the circumstances and the fact that it’s preseason.

I’m ok that everyone doesn’t agree with that, and again, I don’t think anyone got hosed in this situation. My opinion is just that the general rule of thumb shouldn’t allow it. But that’s just my opinion, and if the rest of the league doesn’t agree I think that’s ok. It sounds like it doesn’t usually create any issues in other leagues, which is great. I trust people will be fair and it likely won’t happen often anyway.

While I don't agree in general, I certainly think it's even less of an issue at this point in the season when the waiver wire is via random selection, as there is no "worse" teams as of now.

I get what you’re saying. But the waiver rules are intended to keep things more fair in general. It gives every team 24 hours to bid, which teams didn’t have in this case (not saying anyone else would have). It also ensures the team giving up the player can’t just pick a team to give him to (not saying you would have, but someone could). Also, IMO, all trades should involve both sides giving up something. Even if the other side only gives up $1 to skip the waiver line, at least it’s something.

@Name TBD - Those "worse" teams had the same opportunity to send me a trade request. Had I received more than one request to trade Kirk for "nothing," I likely would have just cut him and let those teams duke it out on waivers. As I only received one offer...

Cool
-
I get why you would trade a player for nothing, and I see the benefit to both sides. My main thing is exactly how you advertised it… jump the waiver line to get him. I’m not sure that’s in the spirit of the trade/waiver process. But I totally get I’m in the minority on that one. Not accusing anyone of anything bad, just that if it becomes common it could circumvent the waiver process that helps worse teams. As a one-off it’s not a big deal and I’m good. Excited for the season!

is this a sewing circle?

PCE was here last year, and understands the system of waiving players. Also possible that he wants to open up cap space to claim Cole.
GF Chaunceys on
March 19, 2024 2:38 PM
-
For about the same reasons, I vetoed the trade also
-
For that reason, and because it looks to me like PCE is new to ottoneu (account created in January), I vetoed the trade. If anyting, it will give the PCE owner a chance to reconsider. It was actually the first trade I've ever vetoed in my fantasy career.
-
I could neve accuse anyone of collusion, just think maybe the PCE owner didn't realize he can get pretty close to that money ($10) right away without having to give away Skubal. And they'll get the other $10 if someone picks up Javier or another $5 if Javier is still on the wire in 30 days and they reauction and cut. The cash that Full Throttle gave up can be easily recovered through the same mechanism - they can actually make a nice profit if they now cut Javier and someone picks him up at $20!
-
Exactly, I gave you 6$ more on your cap and an open spot on roster, you saved the 3$ cap penalty if you would of cut, these trades don't happen often in Ottoneu, maybe tht's why it caused questions marks, but I really don,t see the fuss about it. I'm much more concerned about the other trade of Skubal and Valdez for Bello and Singer
-
That's where I'm at, too, W&B. It's not up to me to negotiate trades for owners. If there's no reason to believe collusion, and there's not, I vote "approve" on every trade.

IRL, dozens of players per season are traded for nothing but cash considerations, which is basically what happened here. Had I waved Kirk, I would’ve been running the risk that he would go unclaimed, which would have left me with a $3 cap penalty.

I didn’t trade Kirk for “nothing.” I traded him for a guaranteed $6 in cap space plus an open roster spot.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, including these two owners. If we're the trading deadline and these guys were friends or something, then that would be curious. But preseason? Who knows the value of these guys right now? All based upon projections. And picking up $13 in cap room is legit.
-
Most people don't vote on trades, so unlikely anything will happen - but it's an option if you feel strongly about it.
GF Chaunceys on

Yeah that's a weird one. Javier would get him back $10 right away plus $5 in a month, and Skubal went over $30 in most auctions where he was available this offseason, tons of value to give up for Bello.
-
My guess is having to pay to get off of Javier's salary. $20 for a guy worth maybe $5 (at most). It's a lot to give up, but if you believe in Bello, it's justifiable. The option is there to vote against it, though.

Skubal and Valdez for Singer and Bello, hmmm very odd deal which I don't understand
-
Ok cool. Last year was my first time playing ottoneu so I hadn’t seen it before. I’m good with teams just using the trade voting option to veto something at any point if enough people think it starts to become unfair. Thanks for the context and the discussion!

It would, obviously, be very different if it was the player + the cash to cover the player for nothing.

I also see no issue with it. It happens in other leagues I'm in, as well. It'd be weird if it was the same two teams over and over, but PNW wrote that it was available to the whole league and someone took it. Gave him the $6 free space, and the other team a player they wanted.

In MLB, I’m pretty sure you can’t trade players for nothing, and I’m assuming there’s good reason for that because of the incentives it potentially creates. I don’t have a problem with this trade specifically or think anyone did anything wrong here. I was just thinking that it bypasses the waiver process that already exists to reward lower ranked teams, and instead allows teams to skip that with a first come first served offer.

That’s good context that it’s never led to issues in other leagues you’ve been in. I’m glad to hear that. My main point was that in waivers, there is 24 hours where anyone can bid, and the lowest ranked team gets priority. In this case, there was less than 24 hours, and if there had been multiple offers the receiving team could have picked which team they wanted to “give” the player to. To be clear, I’m not saying anything shady happened at all. And I see the trade-off for both sides.

I don't understand what you mean by skipping the wire. One team is taking on cap which is as much if an asset as players are in this system (eg, loans), so they'll just have to make corresponding moves (or not be able to make moves) and other teams may benefit from that. For example, Wham Bam is now over the cap and will have to drop a player. I've seen it happen in a few leagues I'm in and it's never led to any issues.
-
Yeah I get that. But they are also getting to skip the waiver line in the process, right? I get that anyone could’ve offered the same trade and probably didn’t, it just seems it could create some strange incentives if it becomes common practice.

One said is getting a player, the other side is getting a full $6 (no cap penalty) and a roster spot, which is definitely not nothing. I'm totally fine with these trades
-
I’m not sure that trades for nothing should be allowed. Am I wrong on that? Seems like that completely bypasses the whole concept of it being a “trade” if both sides don’t give up something of value.

Looking to trade Pena and Javier if anyone is interested. Mainly looking for pitching or outfield

Alright guys,
Everything transferred over well, with the exception of Bauer and Uwasawa, who I added manually. Please check your roster and the salary assigned to each player. I'm sure it's fine, but it will take you all less time to do your own team than it will take me to do 12. I have screenshots of every team from the draft saved for reference if you see a discrepancy.

Thank you
-
For the same reason we can't do live (time zones), we can't fairly do a daily start/end as it's different for everyone. All players have 16 hours from when their first nominated, which should allow everyone to see players are nominated. After a new high bid is placed, the timer for that player sets back to 8 hours.
GF Chaunceys on

Is there a start and end everyday or is this going for 24 hours?
-
To try to allow people better team planning - I have everyone set up with 1 nomination to start - meaning we should have 12 auctions going at once, if everyone is on the ball. The original nominator gets a new bid when their previous auction ends.

We're set-up in Couch Managers. Please double check your players/costs, but everything seemed good.
Also, please notice that player positions on CM do not necessarily match Ottoneu (several who are UTIL only here, have a position there based on "most common position expected"). Make sure to check back with Ottoneu BEFORE bidding on players. I won't dial back picks because of position errors/mismatches.
We'll get started tomorrow afternoon. Happy drafti

I will do Step 3, as soon as everyone is set up (Step 2). Please do this as soon as possible. It takes about 5 minutes, even if you don't have a CM account, and they're free (to join/participate).
