Tyler, can you send me the VC link again. Apologies.
-
I am going to have to miss the draft. Please save me some scraps for the waiver wire. Thx. :)
-
Our draft is tomorrow. If you wish to join the VC and have NOT received an invite, DM me and I will send to your preferred email. Good luck in your final day of preparation.
-
One week until our draft!
-
We have two signed up for OPL. Stephen, Brandon, Bruce, Joe? want to throw away $50 but get the right to buy a cool shirt? Larry won his shirt (for making the final 32), but this year you can buy with a discount even if you don't make the final 32.
-
OPL entry is open for those who finished in top 6 last season.
-
I have sent a teams invite to all for a VC to be held during the draft. The purpose is to enhance the ability to smack talk over the chat box in the draft room. If you did not receive, check your spam. If you still can't find let me know by DM on this platform, and I can send to another address.

I will send a teams invite for our draft for those that prefer that to the chat box on the draft page. If you would like me to send the invite to an email different than the one you use for the league, send me a 1:1 message on this app.

Spring training starts for early birds today!
-
The first pitcher & catcher report date for spring training is this Friday (2/9). It's starting!

As the Commish was aware before I joined, I will be overseas on Draft Day and so unsure of whether I will be available for the draft with time differences and travel. As this is a rebuilding year, I am aware the leftovers may not be great, but it should shorten the auction time for you all. I will probably have to do accommodate trades/salary during the year .
-
Another good resource is Chad Young's annual Ottoneu player rankings. Chad is one of the original Ottoneu players from the very first league. He ranks players by position based on their Ottoneu value and gives ranges for what he thinks they are worth. Here is the link to this years pitcher rankings, the other positions are linked on the same page: https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/chads-2024-tiered-ottoneu-rankings-starting-pitchers/
-
For those interested a good draft prep resource is the average salaries page. Click players on the tool bar and then average salaries on the far right. Once on that page set for Fangraphs Points. This sortable page will show you median and average salaries for all players across all leagues plus the price paid in the previous 10 auctions. This can give you a rough idea how much you may want to bid for a particular player at auction.
-
Good job everyone! Another year without Commish intervention at the keeper deadline. There are 112 open roster spots and $876 in unallocated salary. Typically, we spend less than 1 minute/player in the draft...so the 2hr estimate is still valid. Good luck in your planning between now and the draft.
-
Based on open roster spots at this point, I expect our draft will take about 2 hrs.
-
Looks like Portland, Gtown and Beef are going to bully the rest of us at auction at the moment.
-
Thanks Larry! It looks like everyone is good to go for the keeper deadline (paid and legal rosters). There may be more drops by midnight ET but everyone is good to go.
-
I pinged Niv about the random Dubon on waivers. Apparently this is a glitch that has been periodically happening across leagues as there are no waivers until post auction.
-
I also have never had to apply my rules for roster legality....and hope to never have to.
-
Thanks Stephen and Larry....all good on the trade front. There is one owner who still has to adjust their roster, but all others are good to go at this point.
-
I was advised by those in the Ottoneu know that trades will clear through midnight tomorrow and only difference with regular season is you can't drop anyone you trade for because once the trade clears the rosters have been locked. To Steve's point, if the roster is illegal after the trade or the trade is vetoed I think the usual rules would apply--Tyler will apply his rules for making the roster legal or if vetoed (which has never happened in this league) Tyler would just void the trade.
-
My vote would be to consider the roster legal if, as of midnight on the deadline, a pending trade would result in the roster becoming legal. If the pending trade ends up being vetoed by the league by the standard vote, then the LM locks the team and drops players under the normal procedure.
-
Just checked on this and we can trade up until the deadline. So anything before Midnight EST tomorrow will go through.
-
Gentlemen, as we approach the keeper deadline, there is no longer time for trades to process within the 48 hr window. As we are still in discussion re: changing to 24 hrs, I want to propose the following for this keeper deadline. If any owner objects to a pending trade by 2100 ET tomorrow, I will veto the trade as LM. If there are no stated objections by 2100 ET, I will push the trade through. I will not take any action for trades initiated after 2100 (which I think means they will not process).
-
I think my roster is legal after this trade processes
-
Unofficially, it looks like Stephen and Paul S are the only owners with rosters that would be illegal as of midnight tomorrow. As a reminder, you are limited to a roster of 40, so if you have 40 players (even if you have available spend), you will not be able to draft anyone as the roster is capped at 40 for the draft.
-
JD and Paul S still need to renew before midnight ET tomorrow.
-
There is some interesting data out there on decline in player performance with age and tying that to specific skill sets and rate of decline. Speed obviously the first to go, power tends to persist. Pitchers with off speed stuff tend to last (Jamie Moyer), but then there is also the exception (Nolan Ryan). Lot of chatter in the Ottoverse this off season about JD Martinez value given his age, but still consistent performance. For example:https://blogs.fangraphs.com/checking-in-on-the-aging-curve/
-
With young pitchers, I have been accumulating data that may support an hypothesis that pitch rotation speed, curve balls, and pitch speed are linked to increased risk of TJ surgery. More to come.
-
Certainly performance appears one factor. But, in a multivariate analysis, age stands out as a major variable. Obviously I have not been able to go back over data from past years. But, if age is a driver of performance, and if it was unique to this year, what makes this past season so different? Clock?
-
Not sure it is their ages that is getting them cut as much as performance/Ottoneu inflation. $2 per MLB player plus arbitration each season adds up. Just a reminder you can check a player's average salary across all leagues on the player's individual page if you are on the fence about cutting someone. You may have a good reason to hold even if you are paying above average and the data is somewhat skewed by league type (FGPTS, 5x5, 4x4), but it does give you a rough sense of relative value.
-
I am fine with the smaller window of 24 hours to approve trades.
-
Interesting to see so many players being shed who are over 33 years old.
-
There are also several teams (including mine) that do not have legal rosters at this point (but they don't have to be legal until 1/31 midnight ET). Your roster cannot exceed $400 - $1 for each open roster spot. For example, if you have 35 players on your roster (5 open spots), your total salaries must be 395 (400-5) or less to be legal after the deadline.
-
We have three owners (Stephen, JD and Paul) who need to renew/pay before midnight on the 31st.
-
The system is that I will drop the least expensive player that will get your team into compliance. If one player will not get you into compliance, I will drop your most expensive one, the repeat the process. If there are two players who are tied for this "honor" I will drop the one who scored the least MLB points in 2023. If there are two minor league players who are tied, the one at the lowest level will be dropped, if still tied the one with the least points at that level in 2023.
-
Reminder to all owners that line ups lock on 1/31 at midnight ET. You will not be able to drop/add/trade after this date until our draft so you roster must be legal at this time, and the only money you will have for the draft will be determined then. If any owners have illegal lineups following the deadline, the Commisioner (me) will deal with any irregularities by systematic process (see the next message).

Here is link that may interest our new owners: https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/so-what-is-ottoneu-2024-update/#more-147481

It was posted on Ottoneu Slack by one of the guys who scrapes the site and analyzes the data. Any Ottoneu player can join Ottoneu slack by posting a request on the community page. There is a dedicated topic where you ask Niv to send you an invite. Lots of chatter on Slack, but also a lot of decent insight and debate on strategy, player pricing etc…… you can choose which channels to subscribe to modulate the signal to noise. I find the “keep or cut” and “trade review” channels most helpful.
-
Thanks Larry! Can you attach a link for everyone to read? If there is interest we can put it up for a vote. One disadvantage of the 24hr window is that it does require more vigilance than the 48hr window.
-
Throwing this out for consideration. I read today that 78% of Ottoneu leagues have a 24 hour window to process trades and remaining 22%, like ours, have a 48 hour window. Most of my other leagues, except this one and one other use 24 hours without an issue. In the offseason it really doesn't matter, but in season 24 hours seems like it might be a bit better. Not a big deal, just thought I would throw it out there.
-
We have a full set of owners. We need people to renew their teams (pay $20) and get rosters legal prior to midnight ET on 1/31. Some have paid and some have legal rosters....but just a reminder that rosters freeze at midnight 1/31 and new players will not be able to be acquired until the draft.
-
Welcome Paul.
-
Welcome Paul! Owners, we have a new colleague, Joe's friend Paul. Paul will take over Anna's team formerly known as the One Hit Wonders.

I have been asked how to renew. Click on Ottoneu at the top left of your homepage, then select dashboard. On the right of the dashboard is a link to renew.
-
5 have now renewed.
-
Geezer: yes, until the end of the month.....I just want to avoid last minute surprises.
-
Don’t we have until the end of the month?
-
Only Roca, Hudson and Portland have renewed their dues at this point. Please renew and if you have questions how, let me know.
-
9 owners still need to re-up and pay their $20.
