Yes, I did get the sense from my 'research' that it was pretty hard to game the system. Seems like there are ways though (ex. bid on multiple open auctions at the end of the year and end up way over $400 into the offseason)? Wouldn't that be sort of outside the spirit, to enter the offseason with an illegal roster?
Sidenote - gonna miss ya', Yermin! :)
-
The offseason is pretty tamper proof from my experience. From October to November, arbitration takes place where every team can allocate dollars to other teams players. Plus yearly price increases of $2 for each player ($1 for milb) is added. Then teams can trade up until the keeper deadline of Jan. 31. All budget caps are reset to $400. So in my case, I have a $424 budget, it will end up ~$534 after arb and price increases, but I will still have to get it under $400 before the draft.
-
Also - have heard from a few that there is support to shorten the trade veto/acceptance window from 48-hr to 24-hr. I am supportive of this, so plan on taking a vote after the season is over to apply the rule to 2022. Any other items that folks would like to add for consideration re: rules changes, just send me a note and we can work through the idea before formalizing any proposals.
-
Hey gang - been a while since I checked in. Hope all of you are doing well! I wanted to just tease something that I'll have more thoughts on soon, but want to invite any other POVs (especially if you're a veteran player) regarding end of year/offseason and anything we can do to mitigate any 'gaming' of roster sizes or salary cap. I don't even quite understand how this exactly would manifest - hence the 'more thoughts soon' - but sounds like this is something to potentially plan/manage for. Thx!

(2 of 2) The loan is there to help teams trade high contract players who have little value on a bad team to winning teams who value that player more. My trade return would slow my rebuild if I had to match or be close on money in a trade. For example if I asked for $30 Bregman, he's now $32 next season, plus all the arb money he'll get because I have no other good players so his contact is no longer valuable to me.
-
(1 of 2) I appreciate all the public and private feedback, it helps me learn this league a lot quicker. Value is a relative term when it comes to player contacts and also trade returns. The loan doesn't reduce Soto's salary to $13, but it allows a $62 Soto to be rostered for just the remainder of the season. A $62 Soto is probably cut or can have arb $ applied if you feel his contact is low. My focus is a trade package that will provide me value for the next several years so I can compete.
-
I don't really have a problem with it, but a $13 Juan Soto is worth...... a lot.
-
Likewise, happy to talk through any issues with the trade if anyone feels like they'd like to have a chat.

I can assure you there is no collusion between Glaus and myself as should be evident by the other trade I have made so I don't understand the reason for 2 vetoes. Please direct message me with concerns and/or help me understand the reason for the veto and I am happy to discuss this with you.

Thanks Dan! I want to be fully transparent with my cuts and the reason I want to wait is that I want to make sure to have close to a full lineup so I continue accruing stats and be fair to all teams. Each point counts for the standing and I don't want to give any unfair advantage by rolling over and not having a lineup.
-
Morning everyone - Salvy (Derrick) has asked me to make his PF Cuts tomorrow AM as he'll be away from his devices, so I'll be doing that at some point before noon tomorrow. Once I have the list of names, I'll post publicly so that there's no semblance of me sitting on such valuable information :) But yea, still will honor his request and make the cuts tomorrow (5/15 AM).
Carry on...
Dan

Welcome, Derrick!
-
Welcome mr.derrick!!
-
Hello all, I'm Derrick and excited to join the league. I'm looking forward to evaluating the team but in the mean time I'm open for business. Doesn't look like I'll compete this year so consider me in sell-mode.
-
And with that, please welcome 'derelict30' - the new proprietor of the likely soon-to-be renamed Salvy (always liked that name; love the show). Hoping that the reference to dereliction will be more ironic than coincidental... Another round of PF cuts on their way. And welcome to our new leaguemate!
-
Had a guy reach out on the message boards saying he was interested in taking it over. Looks to have history playing the game; still in sort of first-come first-served mode with the abandoned teams (sorry to your co-worker FCW!), but might be good to codify a bit the process in filling vacancies in the future.
-
aww that's too bad. I asked one of my co-workers if he'd be interested in taking it on. I sent him the roster so he can see what he'd be getting into. I'll keep y'all posted.
-
Morning everyone! Better Call Salvy has let me know that they'll be abandoning their team - so the hunt is now on for a new manager. I'm going to cast a line and vet via the community forums for the next day or so, and then may open it up as a truly abandoned team to the public. Also open to anyone suggesting a friend/family/etc. - just send me a message.
Thanks!
-
Welcome- Thanks for the intro, and good luck building up the squad!

I actually considered starting a latecomers Otto league and have a few players interested, but I’m not sure when to hold the draft.
With all that said, I appreciate the considering in allowing me to join and I look forward to getting to know you and to have a fun 2021 season.
I forgot one of the most important things about me. I have been a HUGE Dodgers fan for 50 years.
Go Blue Crew!
-
I started playing in Otto around six years ago played in a few FGs Points leagues with this being my first 5x5 on Otto. I also play in two Scoresheet leagues and two hometown leagues where I co manage with my best friend since first grade.
I took a break from Otto at the end of last season, but realized how much I missed this format, so I’m back. I wish I had never left, but I can’t change that.
I’m looking to join another Otto league so keep me in mind if you know if an opening.
-
Thank again for the Welcome messages. Since I’m the newbie, I should probably let you know a little bit about who I am. My name is Tim and I live I Southern California. I may be the oldest or one of the oldest in the league (born in the 60s). I’ve been active in playing fantasy baseball and football since around 1993, which based on my overall records, doesn’t mean much.
-
So everyone is aware of latest; Choir Boys cuts are all in the penalty-free spirit, and will bypass waivers and are $0 FA (per Rules). When cutting initially, I don't think any of us realized it needed to be one press of the "Cut" button, though obviously with timing we see that was the intent. So Allen, Pham, Lucchesi, and potentially others will enter the FA pool without cap penalty, and without minimum required bid (other than $1, regardless).
-
Welcome sir choir boys!
-
Hey everyone. I appreciate the welcome. Looking forward to evaluating my ream and getting started. Thanks!
-
What's up, Blue Crew! Welcome aboard!
-
Welcome! :D
-
Additionally, Blue Crew (team name TBD) will have 48hrs to make their round of penalty free cuts as a new manager as the official Ottoneu rules allow.
-
Alright everyone, please welcome the "New Sonders," Blue Crew! Blue Crew reached out to me after I had some questions about the manager replacement process, and had a keen interest towards taking over the Sonders squad. Blue Crew is a veteran player looking to get back in the game after some time off. Welcome!
-
No objections from me. I would like give a shout-out to the comish for his oversight to ensure we have an active league.

^^ This is informing how I'll approach the situation with Sonders (Sonders let me know if you see this!). I sent the first email to them on Apr. 30 - will follow-up later this week, and then will post for replacement manager the following week if still MIA. Any objections (or other ideas), please let me know.
-
Niv just replied on the Ottoneu Forums: "Oh yeah you can get a replacement manager. Search the forums for “replacement owner” to get an idea on how to do this."
On it!

Is there any messaging in the rukesfor in-season takeovers?
-
Don't think there is much you can do, since they paid for the year. More than likely they won't re-up in the offseason and it will be an available team to the public.
-
Sonders hasn't checked since 4/2; I sent an email to check-in, but no word yet. Anyone have any past exp w/ an owner who ducks? Obviously want to get in touch first - they paid the fee and all - but I think everyone would appreciate a more active player. Got some attractive pieces too... alas. Have a nice weekend, everyone!
-
Appreciate the added perspective Krang and LB. All salient points made... as Krang said, will always prefer some rigor behind any decision than blind or unthoughtful decision-making, regardless of leaning!
-
I respect your opinion & appreciate that you would raise concerns with a trade rather than just blindly approving it
-
Good evening gentlemen. Just to give an insiders perspective, I just lost Morejon for the season due to TJ surgery, and I was approached about the possibility of trading Yermin. Being as I had 4 catchers, & all of them I’m very confident in. I felt that trading Yermin for a RP who has been having a comeback season & also wouldn’t break the bank, would be a mutually beneficial transaction. And if I end up being wrong then so be it, but IMO it’s a very low risk transaction for both
-
Suppose it's only fair I make my case after stirring this up. if I don't see how anyone can consider $2 Yermin's current market value anywhere close to that of Alvarado. Multiple owners bid on him when his auction ended on April 5th and he has done nothing but rake and solidify his role since then- if he were cut right now, how many teams would be immediately bidding $9+ for him?

Even if we differ in our opinions of Alvarado's value (IMO none: only PHI LH RP, bad last 2 years, no throne), I'm guessing the range of potential values owners would currently bid on him at auction would be $0-2, and I would assume that no other owner in the league is interested in giving anything of substance for him.

I'm fully aware of small samples and that players can fall off, but Yermin has absolutely mashed in every sample of substance/at every level and was only a lower ranked prospect because he has no defensive value whatsoever. For us, he's a c-eligible DH that's likely to exceed the starts of anyone other than Kiner-Falefa and might actually be top 3 in per game production as well. He won't hit .400...but he’s also probably twice as valuable as an actually closing Alvarado if he hits .250 with pop?

People don't have to make optimal decisions, and every trade will have a winner and loser, but I don't see how a Mercedes owner shouldn't expect MUCH more in trade - like at least half of the actual closers in the league at their existing valuations.

Granted, this looks bad to me because it seems like trading huge upside and current stats for nothing, and if other's opinion is that Alvarado is the new hotness, Yermin the old + busted...fair enough. But to me, all this trade does is incentivize me to spam you all with bad offers for my Hunter Harvey.

Totally agree with the commish here, I've got no problem with the trade. Yermin's hot start could easily crash just as Alvarado could stumble into the closers role. Although I do tend to only velo in truly exceptional circumstances and this trade definitely doesn't fit that for me.

Last point I'll make is that it can be easier to evaluate if you take a step back from the short samples. This is a trade of the White Sox preseason #20 prospect for a committee closer who just entered COVID protocol. Sounds to me like a couple of fliers.
-
...I can't tell which side either of you find this unreasonable for, and that just solidifies the case in my mind. Happy to hear objections, and I suppose the vote is entirely up to you (I run no caucus but my own), but I'll always go into a trade with a prior that there is a reason behind each trade and that it may not be YOUR strategy, who are we to muddle with someone else's (obviously true outlier cases excused).
-
Suppose I should weigh in as commish here! I have no problem with the deal. IMO it's reasonable because there's not a whole lot of YTG guarantee here. Yermin is off to a tremendous start; but also has no pedigree. I've seen Jake Fox, Shane Spencer, et al. Alvarado could return and rack up 30 saves. Or Yermin could continue at this pace and Alvarado could get one of those long cases. Who knows. And that's ultimately why I side on this being A-OK. I think the telling thing from my POV is that...
-
don't see it either, personally.
