FIP, I think you are exactly correct. The mechanics are fine the way they are. glad I am taking the time to really dive deeper into the mechanics to improve. You just have to wrestle with it a little, at least for me. I think what JD shows was good but as I think about it, the way it is is fine. Thanks for all the help because I understand it so much more now.

I think the game mechanics and rules are pretty clear. The offseason runs from arbitration to the keeper deadline, and the salary cap and roster limits are intentionally lifted to allow for team building. Once the keeper deadline comes, the expectation is that everyone has a legal roster in terms of salary and roster spots.

@JDeP&A That was a good read, thanks! I indeed started a bunch of prospect auctions at the end of the season assuming and planning that I'd have to drop to 40 players to participate in arbitration, but was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to make those decisions until the keeper deadline. If others assumed the same and this is against the spirit of the rule for us, I'll refrain from this in the future.

That’s an interesting read but one thing no one pointed out was the possibility of making arbitration less useful. What if other owners put money on guys you can’t keep anyway. That’s a big advantage over someone who has 42 roster spots as apposed to 61 say, for arbitration absorption. Just the fact you have more players to trade before keeper deadline. You just have to be down to at least 40 at that time. I don’t know but I am happy I figured out the part I was looking for, that’s a good quest

https://community.ottoneu.com/t/going-over-roster-cap-limits-towards-the-end-of-the-season/2271 The community has had some discussion about the topic - basically agreeing that carrying a clearly over roster and over budget team is against the spirit of the rule. That being said, Niv recommends the league set the expectation. Chipper this year is the first time I recall anyone going overboard with late season adds, so we should clarify the league standard on owning 60 players off-season.

"Teams must always be able to field a 40 man roster for $400; therefore following the keeper deadline, a team salary must never exceed $360 + the number of players on the roster. However, there is no salary cap from the end of the MLB season until the keeper deadline."

Said blurb doesn't give a fun caveat or being "in season" like some of the other mentions of roster limits, so, like what are we talking about? This seems like a strategy to go over roster limits for a certain period of time just for funsies (or I guess genius strategy?). It doesn't even matter because I don't think it would help, but it's not allowed.
