FIP, I think you are exactly correct. The mechanics are fine the way they are. glad I am taking the time to really dive deeper into the mechanics to improve. You just have to wrestle with it a little, at least for me. I think what JD shows was good but as I think about it, the way it is is fine. Thanks for all the help because I understand it so much more now.
-
To House: I don’t think you did anything intentional and you didn’t break any rules. I’m 6 players over. It’s an interesting question for sure
-
I think the game mechanics and rules are pretty clear. The offseason runs from arbitration to the keeper deadline, and the salary cap and roster limits are intentionally lifted to allow for team building. Once the keeper deadline comes, the expectation is that everyone has a legal roster in terms of salary and roster spots.
-
@JDeP&A That was a good read, thanks! I indeed started a bunch of prospect auctions at the end of the season assuming and planning that I'd have to drop to 40 players to participate in arbitration, but was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to make those decisions until the keeper deadline. If others assumed the same and this is against the spirit of the rule for us, I'll refrain from this in the future.
-
That’s an interesting read but one thing no one pointed out was the possibility of making arbitration less useful. What if other owners put money on guys you can’t keep anyway. That’s a big advantage over someone who has 42 roster spots as apposed to 61 say, for arbitration absorption. Just the fact you have more players to trade before keeper deadline. You just have to be down to at least 40 at that time. I don’t know but I am happy I figured out the part I was looking for, that’s a good quest

https://community.ottoneu.com/t/going-over-roster-cap-limits-towards-the-end-of-the-season/2271 The community has had some discussion about the topic - basically agreeing that carrying a clearly over roster and over budget team is against the spirit of the rule. That being said, Niv recommends the league set the expectation. Chipper this year is the first time I recall anyone going overboard with late season adds, so we should clarify the league standard on owning 60 players off-season.
-
Hey, 41 I think I have it now actually. I appreciate your help working through it.
-
"Teams must always be able to field a 40 man roster for $400; therefore following the keeper deadline, a team salary must never exceed $360 + the number of players on the roster. However, there is no salary cap from the end of the MLB season until the keeper deadline."
If you are genuinely, and I mean genuinely confused, I'd recommend sending a note to the Ottoneu creator. He is quite responsive. But I suspect you aren't actually confused in which case I don't think you'll

To 41 I’m confused about at no time because we all are pretty much right now
-
Said blurb doesn't give a fun caveat or being "in season" like some of the other mentions of roster limits, so, like what are we talking about? This seems like a strategy to go over roster limits for a certain period of time just for funsies (or I guess genius strategy?). It doesn't even matter because I don't think it would help, but it's not allowed.

At the risk of wading into these murky waters and being dragged under, it seems pretty clear. Aside from the obvious intent of the rules/game which are being asked about...
The rules have a section that explicitly says "At no time shall a team willingly go over roster and salary cap limits. If a team knowingly does this, they will face penalties at the discretion of their league's commissioner."

Yes House,
There has been some issues that were not handled well on my part and for my involvement I completely apologize to you and to all. There have been many changes in my life and I really don’t see that being a problem any more. It was behavior not indicative of my character. That being said, I am curious about this. The draft really means nothing to me. Last year I only needed one player and didn’t bother.
-
Also to House to clarify, the commissioner has THE RIGHT to remove players from teams to be eligible for the draft. Mmmm.. Makes me think that’s not clearly defined. Can he waive his rights? Or is he compelled to use them? Personally, in this situation I would let the player choose what he would rather do. I mean, he is already forgoing the draft. Also, with this strict salary cap, arbitration and roster limit rules in the game. Anything that gives players more freedom would be fun
-
The rules are the same for each owner. Everyone has the opportunity to make the same moves. Some moves/players come at a risk. If you don't want the risk, don't keep the player/ make the move. I love the risk, it is what makes ottoneu fun for me.
-
You get the spot back if/when they officially transfer him to the 60 day, which means it also depends on things like whether their 40 man is full. Since he was in the majors when he was injured, they can't send him to the minors for non-rehab purposes until he's been cleared as healthy. If a player is injured in the majors, he's entitled to MLB service time during his recovery.
-
@CH - Here's what I predict will happen: The system will consider us 'in-season' immediately after the Auction Draft. You will argue that the season doesn't actually start until opening day and ask the commissioner to make changes that aren't available without commissioner intervention. People will get upset that you are asking for special treatment because of this pre-identified gray area. You will get upset at the ensuing 'witch-hunt' when you're just trying to be competitive. Please don't.
-
To Uggla now, I get what you are saying and it makes sense. Here is one scenario I know many here are keeping an eye on. I have Kyle Bradish and he is not looking like he is going to be back till mid season but who knows. He definitely starts on the 60day or whatever. I assume you get that roster spot back opening day? Hell, I don’t even know how he will be designated yet? Could they send him to the minors?
-
Sorry, that was to chophouse
-
Answering Uggla, You are correct that in season your roster must be valid during the season to be able to do trades. Apologies if I inferred that. To clarify, I am only talking about the period before opening day.
-
To get the roster spot back, the player has to not just be on the injured list but on the 60 day. Carrying way more than 40 past the keeper deadline would not be wise. I can't count the number of times when a player that I thought I'd get back from the 60 or a prospect I expected to be called up was either much later than expected being active in MLB or was less effective than expected. Carrying 20 of those types through the keeper deadline and draft would be very wasteful.
-
Unfortunately you cannot propose or accept trades during the season when your roster is invalid. I think the rules allow what you're proposing, but the Cons heavily outweigh the Pros here.
-
It won’t be hard to make cuts before opening day. What about all the hurt veterans you picked up that won’t be ready till midseason? I would assume if they are IR to start you get that roster spot back. You can also make trades after the auction to lower the amount players you have and if what your cutting wasn’t worth anything to someone else, the penalty would be negligible
-
I don’t know. There is no bending the rules here at all and I wasn’t using you as an example and my humble apologies if you felt that way. I’m just curious about strategy and options. What if you started a new team and picked up every injured payer cut and prospect throughout the year. You end up at the keeper deadline with like say 60 players and a $300 payroll. I could make the argument that you just the owner skip the draft entirely
-
As someone with 60 players currently on my team... If I just let the keeper deadline pass, then I will not be able to participate in the Auction Draft, trade, or set any lineups until I am under both the player and salary limits, and that will be much harder to accomplish if I, when I cut players after the keeper deadline, I am penalized with half of their salary. I expect to be punished/harassed if I were to try to bend the rules by having the commissioner remove players after the deadline.
-
So say you had 60 players on your team and you just let the deadline pass and don’t do the auction. Also, it sounded like the commissioner taking players off the team was making the draft mandatory but I could be wrong. Also if a commissioner does take players of a team it doesn’t say if the player still gets hit with the 50% penalty
-
It’s all just based on timing. From now until the keeper deadline, roster limits and salary cap don’t apply. On the day of the keeper deadline, rosters have to become “legal” by meeting the roster and salary cap limits by cutting players (penalty free). Post keeper deadline, all cuts include a penalty of half the dropped salary and you won’t be able to make any roster moves other than cuts or participate in the draft until you have a legal roster.
-
I found the rule but reading them brought a few like the situation below
-
The auction process in each later year is the same as in year 1.
Teams that are not under roster limits as defined in I. b. are not allowed to participate in the Auction Draft
Commissioners have the right to remove players from teams that are over limits after the keeper deadline in order to allow them to paricipate in the Auction Draft. Commissioners should work with the other managers in the league and use their best discretion in making these types of roster moves.
Teams may

Thank you very much for the clarification fellows. I will take a look at the rules page that was suggested because I had other questions maybe as well. Let me take a look and I’ll see if I can’t answer them myself.
-
@Colleen's Husband - I think the specific rule you're asking about is called out in the rules page, in the last line of Section VIII. OFFSEASON, subsection 'e': "Teams must always be able to field a 40 man roster for $400; therefore following the keeper deadline, a team salary must never exceed $360 + the number of players on the roster. However, there is no salary cap from the end of the MLB season until the keeper deadline."
-
You can’t include loans in a trade until after the keeper deadline
-
Well, we are able to trade without limits right now apparently but what was wondering about salary cap space. Is that allowed right now? Thanks
-
Thanks man for confirming for me and yes it looks like roster spots don’t need to be adhered to either. Well, in that spirit I would like to say I can’t keep 46 players, so everyone is available
-
My understanding would be yes, roster and salary limits do not matter until the keeper deadline at the end of January, at which point you have to be at or under both salary and the 40 man roster.
-
I see this is trade season but I have a question if someone could help. So are we allowed to just trade right now without regard to the salary cap. Thank you in advance
-
It is almost "trade season" (my funniest part). I am always looking to tweak my lineup, so if you see someone you like take a swing, because I know I will be taking a lot of swings. I don't mind striking out.
-
Excited to join in the fun. I’ve played ESPN/yahoo fantasy for ~10 years but this is my first foray into Ottoneu. Feels like going from automatic to manual transmission, more moving parts to keep track of! Now just need to channel my inner anthopoulos on the path to victory!!
Glad to hear things are improving for you Colleen’s Husband.

Just to make sure I have done it right. I have put all my arbs in, but please tell me if I’m wrong. I have been very busy lately but look forward to the new season. I do plan to renew my subscription, which I do in January. I’ve been going through a tough divorce but now everything is great. The crazy thing is she wants to get back together. It was all bad timing, who knew?
-
And now it’s all done! Thanks everyone! I’m looking forward to the rest of the offseason
-
We’re down to three days left to complete arbitration and only one team left.
-
Thanks WOBA, everything looks good now. Nice team name Murphy's Slow! For everyone else: 8 days left in arbitration, hopefully the last 3 teams can participate.
-
I removed the commissioner role from that team, I think Ottoneu is just taking time to register the change.
-
Welcome new manager (justmanager)! Is the new guy a de facto commissioner because Smoltzy93 was? Also: Happy November, I hope everyone can participate in Arbitration as we're about halfway though, you have 2 weeks left to allocate arb money.
-
We have a new manager for Murphy’s Law, welcome!
-
I have confirmation that everyone is in other than Murphy’s Law. Does anyone know someone that would want to join? If not, I’ll try the Battery Power board and then the Ottoneu board.
-
I emailed Probably going to finish last and he said he plans to continue.
-
Probably going to finish last hasn't had any activity since May.
-
The only two teams I don’t think I have clarity on status are Marg Sabol and Probably Going to Finish Last. I think everyone else is in other than Murphy’s Law, please correct me if I’m wrong.
-
Happy Arbitration all! I hope WOBA is able to find replacement owners for any not coming back next year so they can participate in the full offseason experience, including arb.
-
No, I think the trading option is closed until after arbitration, I was just still in baseball mode (football team is terrible) and decided to start the conversations after others had updated.
