Congrats Hitless on the back to back. Thanks again for all that played. Next year I will be doing a private Venmo/Zelle pool for $50 for whoever wants to join (not mandatory). Money will go to whoever makes it the farthest for those who play, tiebreaker will be most points scored in playoff round if necessary.

Hey All, bushwackers reminded me because of the dodgers/padres the season is starting early on the the 20th-21st. If we can draft before that would be great but also open to the idea of just eating those two games and not allowing auctions to start until after our draft. Open to thoughts.

Last response from me and I’ll rest my case. I think encouraging use of the trade block and message board would help a great deal in solving our problem without additional restrictions on gameplay. If you know a guy is out there potentially going for undervalue you can jump in on negotiations. It takes some initiative from the manager though. At the end of the day I’ll have fun regardless of the rules. Excited for the season to get here. College baseball 7 days away.

For me the idea isn't to prevent a high dollar team from "breezing" through the playoffs. Just want to make sure that if they do decide to push in the chips they actually pay adequate future value.
Walker Buehler's Day off on February 9, 2024 12:14 PM

My respectful disagreement was for hitless FYI haha I like the blood pumping on message board, means we care and I like that!
bushwhackers on February 9, 2024 12:01 PM
-
Well I just respectfully disagree. $500+ rosters breeze thru playoffs like it’s nothing haha it’s much more fun to me to have a competitively balanced league that still allows you to expand a playoff push within reality but hey that’s what the voting poll is for! Make sure to vote everyday me and thanks for handling that Buehler , hope we can get a draft date with minimal juggling act this year that works for everyone.

The idea is still to allow for that kind of buying and selling transaction but force the selling team to more closely loan the value of what they are shipping out.
Again, this was an idea and im not sure it will be better in practice, I thought it was worth experimenting. I love the otto economy as much as anybody but I don't want to take it as gospel that the built in rules are absolutely perfect and have no flaws. I love the discussion though and we'll definitely vote on it!Walker Buehler's Day off on February 9, 2024 11:57 AM
-
I see your point. If the hard cap was $400 I would agree more but $500 still leaves a lot of room for the most obvious championship strategy of "pushing in the chips". The idea was to prevent a "selling" team sending off a $25 true value piece with an outsized loan of $75 just to get back a marginal prospect that the selling team may or may not keep because why not take a chance on a marginal prospect when you know you're not competing this year.
Walker Buehler's Day off on February 9, 2024 11:57 AM
-
I am not opposed to it because it gives a new flavor to the league, but I just don’t completely agree with the argument for it. No one can really “buy” a championship. There are no small market/big market teams. We all have the same resources of $400. A hard cap eliminates an entire strategy for winning. If no one else is willing to take on high loans that’s a market inefficiency, an idea this site was basically built around. I think a hard cap rewards people for not trying different strategies.
Scared Hitless on February 9, 2024 11:43 AM

I'll include it when I send out the poll for scheduling the draft.
Walker Buehler's Day off on February 9, 2024 11:29 AM

I see good points on both sides of the coin, I'm not entirely sure its a better league with the 125% hard cap but I thought it was something worth experimenting! There is still room to give loans but as bushwackers said, it prevents the $600 and in theory forces teams to shop the market a bit more for their prospects. I didn't think there would be much push back to giving it a shot, we can definitely throw it to a vote. Don't want to implement anything that most of the league isn't for.
Walker Buehler's Day off on February 9, 2024 11:29 AM

For the record I’m not saying the championships of dragonflies or hitless last year are BS or anything because of high $ rosters, you simply operated within the rules and won the league nothing wrong with that. I just personally think $500 is plenty for playoff push and have seen teams in other leagues get into the 600’s which is absurd to me and I would like to prevent that from happening one of these years.
bushwhackers on February 9, 2024 11:23 AM
-
I think it’s to prevent teams from buying championships which is easy to do when you can cut guys with no penalty in the offseason back into the draft pool. If you are feeling out of contention why keep an overpaid aging star into the offseason who you know you are going to cut when you can trade him at the deadline with a to contender with fatty loan attached for a cheap piece even if that cheap piece doesn’t work out? does $500 not give you space to expand roster and go all in?
bushwhackers on February 9, 2024 11:18 AM

looks like we need 2 vote? I don’t think losing 1B Jared Walsh (who is stuck in the minors now) & 1B Vinnie Pasquantino (was in minors at time and was a free agent to the everyone in league 3 weeks before that trade) was the reason he didn’t win back to back. I think the reason he won that year was because he had a over a $500 roster and traded for one of the best players ever for basically nothing to him to add to his already stacked squad that could have won probably won the league nat
bushwhackers on February 9, 2024 11:15 AM

Continued…Ran out of characters…what I think is going to happen with this league is teams will be stingier with their prospects and bottom teams will stay at the bottom with old vets and the good teams will remain at the top with their good rosters and prospect pipeline.
Scared Hitless on February 9, 2024 6:38 AM

I have an issue with both the concept and the way it’s being implemented. My understanding is this is meant to prevent wildly one sided trades between contenders and bottom ranked teams, but I haven’t really seen that myself. Some took issue with the Trout trade a few seasons ago, but in retrospect that trade was pretty balanced. Not to mention, the team that received the “one sided deal” may have won but they suffered for it in 2023. I also think this is a topic worthy of a vote by the league.
Scared Hitless on February 9, 2024 6:34 AM

I don't think so, its not an actual custom setting just something that might be enforced (and probably won't need to be). It does prevent a team from going way overboard in our league in attempts to win OPL though.
