I have been in three ottoneau leagues and we have always finished our initial draft.

I think we need to give everyone a chance to fill out a 40 man roster during a live draft. The free agents r a blind auction. Having to do that for a lot of players would suck.

Remaining players can then be bid on as normal free agents over a 48 hour auction (you will have to nominate the player you are interested in bidding on).
Regarding Rule 1A - I am expecting we all maintain 22 players *during the regular season* to fill each starting slot (C,1B, 2B,3B, SS, MI, 5 OF, 5 SP, 5 RP).
We can finish the auction Sunday night at midnight and bid on any remaining spots to be filled later.
Let me know if anyone has issues with this.

Regarding Rule 1A , below:
a. Each team should maintain at all times a roster of 22 major-league players that can fill out a starting lineup. The remaining 18 roster spots can be used for reserves, consisting of both major and minor leaguers.
We can apparently start the league whenever. I think it makes sense, after this auction draft, that I mark everyone as "done with draft".

I think I’m the reason we aren’t doing the 11th, so if we run over I’ll draft from my phone for the 3rd weekend.
-
I’m flexible and want to keep fair to all members.
Main concern this week is we’d need a 3rd session if we don’t finish rosters ( we have no consensus on 3rd so I’m concerned the league wouldn’t start on time).
It is possible but it’d be hard on an iPhone.
Attached a doodle poll : https://doodle.com/poll/f3pngvmgtxad6hew
Please vote on availability.
If folks think we can finish rosters starting at say 7, we could limit your time in phone too if no consensus is gathered

Any chance we can push back to 8pm ET like last weekend? I have a family commitment I can't wriggle out of. Otherwise I'll likely be drafting from an iPhone (is that even possible)?
-
Reminder, we’re planning to start at 6PM ET this Sunday. The goal is to get everyone enough players to roster a team to end the auction draft.

I completely understand moving the time back to 8, and I hope everything is o.k. With that said, It would be a lot to ask everyone to go after midnight. 5 Am alarm comes quickly.

Hi,
One of the league members had a significant family item , so draft will be delayed two hours to 8pm.
We will still plan on drafting 4-6 hours starting at 8.

Reminder - the draft starts this Sunday at 6PM Eastern.
We are planning to go 4-6 hours depending on fatigue and time availability.
We need to draft at least 22 players for each team between both drafts (if we do more, that's great).
**Please note the salary cap rules and roster requirements prior to draft, so we don't run into issues **

I recommend a doodle pool to arrange draft dates. Sure would be easier to coordinate than message board banter.

Still at SABR on the 11th.

Sorry about that, yes I meant 4th and 11th

Both the 4th and the 11th (the Sundays) would work for me. I'm in Pacific Time Zone. Assuming a 7pm EST start the only days in March I CANNOT attend would be: 2nd-3rd, 14th, 22nd-25th.
-
I cannot do the 10th as I’ll be at the SABR conference
-
The categories are fixed.
Can folks confirm if March 3rd and 10th work as draft dates? Both Sundays, start at 7 eastern (not sure what time zone everyone is on)?

Define "sophisticated"? Sounds like someone thinks they're the smartest man in the room.

All jokes aside, he says. Immediately followed by a joke. Well done.

All jokes aside, can we change the categories or are they fixed ? If they’re fixed I gotta go buy some 80s styles clothes so I can stay colloquial.
-
By joining a 5x5 league there is a premise the categories will be traditional 5x5 categories unless it is stated otherwise. Any changes to be made are up to members of the league.
-
I personally joined because it was a 5x5 and I knew what the categories were. There was no mystery. Trout, if you wanted different, why didn't you join a 4x4 league?

Fundamentally, I joined the ottoneu league under the premise - more quantitative/sophisticated fantasy baseball. If you want to use a Ferrari to be a Honda driver, we can do that; but to me, at least, there’s an implication when using ottoneu system that some sophistication should be involved. Now, if we want to stick to 5x5 from the 80s, that’s cool; it just means my level of engagement will be lower for this league than my other ottoneu leagues.
-
I’m not disagreeing that there are not categories that better measure a players talent/value.
I tried to be straightforward about what type of league was being created in the title “5x5 ottoneu league”.
The stuff we voted on wasn’t explicitly mentioned , so it was pretty open to change.
Personally the old school 5x5 is my most enjoyable format - I hope most folks in the league are in agreement with this.

I second clogging the bases categories
-
Regarding cats, I agree we should do 5x5 but do we have the option to change the categories themselves? Subject to league vote I'd be interested in the following changes: AVG -> OBP, Wins -> Quality Starts, Saves -> Goose Eggs. That last one is probably not possible but there's a great write-up on the Goose Egg linked here, and it seems to do a great job of being a simple stat that fairly values MR and closers: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/goose-egg-new-save-stat-r
-
I’ll be voting with the majority, so it will be early March draft, allocation , roto, and no playoffs (up to 7 votes). Options are already changed.
We’ll select dates at end of February (at least 2).
5x5 is the only option I wasn’t planning taking votes on, since the league was marketed as 5x5.

Early March, allocation, H2H, no playoff if Roto... if we’re doing Roto can we do something about pitching cats? It’s 2018, I can’t really justify saves as a category.
-
1) early March 2)allocation
3)roto
4)no playoff
I agree this should be a multiple night draft.

The draft takes a significant amount of time.
It would make sense to pause and spread it across 2 or 3 sessions.
Let me know if there are any concerns with this as well.

1.) Early March but also flexible 2.) Allocation 3.) H2H. H2H seems more fun but Rode's does make a solid argument to keep it Roto. 4.) Playoff! None of these options are a deal breaker for me.

Preferences below, but I'm flexible on pretty much everything.
1 - Early March
2 - Allocation
3 - Roto, I'm already in a bunch of H2H leagues and was looking for something different
4 - No playoffs (assuming we stay Roto, I'd prefer a playoff in H2H)
-
I'm also with the consensus here: early March, Allocation, Roto, no playoff. Thanks!
-
1.) Early March but high flexibility on this. 2.) Allocation 3.) Roto 4.) No playoff
-
1. early March. 2. Allocation. 3. Roto. 4. No playoff.
-
1). early March
2). Allocation
3). Roto (I don't really like that this could change. The format, at least for me, was the largest factor when deciding what league to join. Hopefully most joined the league assuming it was a roto league and this will not change.)
4). No playoff
-
Hi,
We need to vote on a few items:
1) Draft Date - early Feb, late Feb, early March, late March. Please select one and we can go for a second date afterwards.
2) Arbitration system- vote off or allocation , please read rules and take a vote.
3) H2H or Roto format - H2H is new this year , please read and vote.
4) Playoffs - No , 6 teams , 4 teams.
Will go by majority voting , if there is no clear cut consensus (tie), will lean towards options selected when league was created.
