I don't want to stir the pot, but maybe we could amend the rule? It's kind of tough to make a roster adjustment if you don't know if you're the winning bidder. Maybe we could give owners 24 hours after the completion of an auction to make any necessary moves?
-
Adjusting rules to deal with owner issues vs saying goodbye to the owner (s) with the issues...there's a debate in there somewhere. Regardless, I've voiced my opinion and appreciate the discussion that we've had. Maybe this rule can be revisited in the future. Moving on now.

My two cents, though this instance is resolved: the rule mostly serves to guard against less active managers who don’t make a corresponding move and abuse the ability to bid on players they don’t have funds or a spot to roster. You can get by without setting a roster for a few days and prevent the competition from rostering and using that player over the same period. Gator is a more active manager who quickly made a corresponding move which is great but that wasn’t always the case in the p

That's a problem, I didn't account for that. In that case I'll put both Sano and Lopez on your team, since you were the highest bidder in the first place.

and now that you have taken the players off my roster I am unable to bid on them for 30 days because they were on my roster for a few hours. and removed for a rule interpretation I was unaware of.

We allow solo bidders because they're not actively getting in the way of other owners. If you want to be sure that your bid is legal, just bid using money you actually have and reserve a single roster spot.

Sure, that can be done. But it also would have put Sanchez in the pool and available for $25 or more. Which could have benefited other teams building. And most of the strong prospects should already be rostered in this format. Ultimately the dollars balance everything out. Each team has to choose where to commit their money.

Additionally, when we implemented this we felt that part of being a good manager is to plan based on the available data. The alternative you're suggesting severely limits that while allowing you to manage after knowing the results. Example: last season I had Gary Sanchez on my roster for 50 around bucks. I could've easily bid silly amounts on hot September callups and just cut Sanchez afterwards in case I couldn't make it work with small cuts, knowing I'd cut Sanchez in the offseason anyway.

Another question - explain to me why it's ok to bid without an open roster spot if you are the only bidder. But not otherwise. How would you know until the bid was over...you wouldn't. It's an inconsistency. And Ottoneu supports corresponding moves just fine. You can't adjust your roster in any way until you drop a player (s) to bring your roster back in regulation. That enforces it right there. It's apples to apples. And your interpretation just doesn't make sense to me.

I get where you're coming from, but Ottoneu doesn't support corresponding moves so in the end that's apples to oranges. Other leagues are free to handle it differently, but that's irrelevant to the discussion to be honest. The main reason why we chose to enforce the official rules in this manner is that it takes away the option to gain the system by bidding with money and offering roster spots you don't have, which becomes more annoying as the season nears its climax.

In MLB if a team wants to add a player to their 25 or 40 man roster they usually make a corresponding move such as a DFA. If they put a waiver claim in on a player they do not drop a player off their 25 or 40 man in hopes of getting the claim through. Why would fantasy baseball approach this any differently. I really hope this league will reconsider it's position on this. As an added benefit, it removes the need for someone to police something that is really already covered.

This is an interpretation I have never seen. Or even heard of. This includes 5 other Ottoneu leagues I am in as well as 30 years across more formats and league services than I can count. Drilling down a bit, I wonder if two teams trade in this league and it's a 3 for 2 trade and the team receiving the 3 players was at 40 players prior to the trade you will void the trade?

The official rules state the following in Chapter I: "c. At no time should a team willingly go over roster and salary cap limits. If a team knowingly does this, they will face penalties at the discretion of their league's commissioner." You see, rRequiring a free roster spot before winning a bid isn't handling matters in reverse, it's the way it's meant to be.

I am in other Ottoneu leagues and all handle auctions as Ottoneu has them set up. I would really like to encourage the league to reconsider this position. I

You are correct, I did not know this. This league rule is outside of the Ottoneu rules and really makes no sense to me. The system is built to force a drop if you exceed your roster limit. Why then require teams to do it in reverse, running the risk of dropping a player without knowing if they won the auction?

A couple of weeks ago I sent out a reminder that bidding with sufficient funds is required, since the game doesn't apply a hard penalty when that rule isn't met. However, I forgot to mention that you should also have a free roster spot for the player you're bidding on (unless you're the only bidder). Gator Balls won the last two auctions without a free spot, but since he did that unknowingly we'll restore the rosters so that the players can be re-auctioned. My apologies for the inconvenience!

Here is your yearly reminder that the Ottoneu game doesn't apply a hard penalty for bidding a larger amount than you have available, but our league does have the following rule: please make sure you have the cash to bid or the player for auction will go to the next highest legal bidder. There will be no penalties if you end up being the lone bidder, nor will there be if the commissioners don't catch it. If you think you've been wronged, let us know and we'll look into it. Good luck bidding!

Evening time EST is hard to do, because that would put the draft past midnight for the several European owners we have in the league before it's even started. Will you be able to make 2 PM, @Gator Balls?
