Greg, I’m good with that change.
-
So I propose that we make the 5milb cut deadline the same date as the Otto cut deadline; Jan 31, and then we’ll start the 5miob draft on Feb 15. That work for everyone? Happy to answer any questions that thw new owners may have.
-
Alright, it looks like we have a full league. Welcome to all the new owners! As I’ve mentioned to each of you, this league has 5miob rosters. Over the last several years we’ve been setting a 5milb cut deadline of January 1 and then draft on Jan 15 (it’s a slow draft, 24 hours to make a pick). However, since everyone just came on I think we should postpone it a month to give the new owners time to get comfortable with their rosters and do their draft prep.
-
Ok, I've switched the league to a $100 league, so all payments will go through the Ottoneu site and be due every Jan 31, just like the former $20 fee. We'll sunset the LeagueSafe buy-in. Thanks for everyone's input. Also, don't forget the arb is due in 3 days. I'll work on getting some arb proxies for our 3 empty slots.
-
If we are going to maintain the status quo on top 3 payouts, then I think we move toward standardizing the league and move the payouts to Ottoneu. I've heard from most of the league, and the majority are either for the switch or indifferent to it.
-
Sorry to let this convo lag for a while. WAR, I know you've proposed some alternate payout structures several times, but I haven't seen much traction on it from the rest of the league. I don't remember all of your proposal, but I do remember the monthly payouts and I'm not a fan of that. If you want to propose something, happy to let the league discuss. If there's some consensus on changing to an alternate payout structure, then it makes sense to keep LeagueSafe.
-
I am good either way. There are some positives and negatives to both cases.

Not bragging here, just saying: I've Commish'd leagues for 25+ years, & if you want to run it like a democracy you'll only ever spin your wheels-- at some point someone has to make a decision for what they want to see from the league/which direction they want the league to go. As far as I'm concerned, going back to Ottoneu payouts is a step backwards.
-
You'll never find anything that "the whole league likes"- I expressed to PTBNL at the start of the year that (if we stick with LS/Top 3 Payouts) I won't be buying-in at all, ever, b/c that's how much I hate the "Top 3" payouts; so now I'll be "forced" to buy-in again to such payouts w/ Ottoneu. I will *never* be in favor of that.
-
If the issue is "1st/2nd win less", I say that's the wrong approach- unless the only reason why u r here is for the $$ (then I refer to the 'gaming' issue). But even if that's why u r here, is it better for two people to win more $$ or for 3-4+ of the league's most active/competitive owners to win something instead of nothing? Do you decrease or increase the chance of teams lower in the standings returning if they're compensated just for being active all year?
-
If you instead incentivize the standings so even someone in last place has a carrott to keep playing and try to get a few more bucks back in his account by working his way up a couple spots, then the people who join the league are more likely to remain competitive all season and stick with the league year after year.
-
RE: "Gaming" - joining the same league under different ID's/usernames/e-mails as a way to corner the market.
If the issue is to make everyone buy-in, then the only people you care about joining are the ones who'll pay-up instead of the ones who'll play all year. Inevitably the majority of those who pay and are elbowed out of competition in the first-third of the season will probably leave the league in a year or two.
-
Leaguesafe has fees too, though. There are fees to buy-in and to get paid out. If we moved to a different payout structure, then I'd say we keep it. You are welcome to propose alternative league payouts, but I haven't seen a lot of league-wide interest in doing that yet. In general, I think if we get away from the standard payout it's going to be hard to find a payout structure that the whole league likes. Everyone is going to be interested in rewarding different things.
-
I’m neutral and good with either direction.
-
I guess we're saving a little on the fees but it's not much if it's an inconvenience for commish (83% payout LS vs. 75% Ottoneu). And it's even closer when everyone doesn't opt in to the $100 side pot like I believe has been the case the past couple years. Unless we decide to change to a unique payout structure (which I'm not crazy about if it lowers the payout for 1st/2nd), then I don't see the reason for not switching.
Just curious though, WAR, what do you mean by gaming to Otton
-
We switched when Niv added fees to these leagues, and I say we've been missing a golden opportunity to make this league unique in that manner. I've also always been skeptical of people 'gaming' the Ottoneu payouts and LeagueSafe allows for more transparency.
-
Absolutely against it-- as I mentioned when we switched to LeagueSafe & again in a league e-mail a couple years ago, LeagueSafe allows us to be more creative with end of season rewards and make for a league where everyone is invested with rewards available to everyone. A "Top 3 payout" structure makes for a less competitive league as it becomes rather apparent rather quick which teams have no shot at a reward.
-
That’s fine with me. Do you know the reason for using leaguesafe in the first place?
-
No objection - moving to a $100 league makes sense to me.
-
I don't want to make the move without input from the league. Could everyone either post on here or DM me if they are for or against the idea? Thanks! And happy opening arb day.
-
As the offseason gets started and we look to fill the vacant teams, what does everyone think about ditching the leaguesafe and switching this to a $100 league? Leaguesafe is a pain and it just seems to me like it'd be easier for everyone if we just moved all the buy-in to Otto. I also think it might make it easier to get new managers, right now no one knows this is a prize league unless they ask.
-
I guess the league is not password protected. I apparently turned it off. I'll just reach out to new owners and let them know about the custom rules (5milb and side-pot). We might have some join and leave again if they aren't aware of the custom rules.
-
I just sent payouts. Thanks to all the owners that have played in the league and are leaving. You've all made this a great league.
-
Congrats to the winners this season. It's been great playing with you all, but I just took a new job and I have to take a big step back from Ottoneu. Best of luck, and please mark my team abandoned!
-
Hello All - I just claimed the Mauddibs team. I have been playing Ottoneu for a few years, but have not played Fangraphs Points before. Looking forward to the off season.

I’d also be happy to add a new co-commish, if anyone wants to volunteer.
-
Housekeeping item. Mauddibs hasn’t been active for several months and didn’t return messages, so I abandoned his team. Columbus also told me he won’t return. So we’ll need to find a couple of new owners. The league currently is password protected, so just let me know if you know anyone that wants to join and I’ll get them added. Thanks!
-
Thanks! It was very tight. You both made up a ton of ground. If there’d been another week, I think you would have overtaken me. A fun race all the way to the end.
-
Congrats PTBNL and Points Taken. Great competitive race all the way to the end.

Too little, too late, unfortunately. Congratulations, Greg, on back to back championships! It was fun that it got closer there at the end.

Oh, it didn’t even dawn on me that you guys were adding guys that play in the doubleheader tomorrow. Whoops, missed the boat on that one
-
In case anyone didn't notice, the Ottoneu season has been extended through Monday because of the planned DH between the Mets and Braves on Monday. If played, those games will count. It also means players can be added for one more day. Such a tight race for all top 3 spots and we get an extra day of it.
-
The Flusterclucks will call up Rhett Lowder from the 5milb roster.
-
I'd like to drop Edwin Arroyo, SS CIN from my MiLB roster
-
I'm not sure if the spirit of the 5milb should be 'how good can you pick through prospect depth' as opposed to channeling cost-controlled top prospect talent to the bottom-performing teams... Not sure if anyone else here agrees but I would fully support a change here (and FWIW, I'm raising this at a time when I hopefully won't be in line for another top MiLB pick after this year).
-
Or to hold them thru the MiLB draft & likely release them before the Auction Draft so someone else might spend resources on a lotto ticket. Either way it seems to limit our strategies over players who (generally) are still unlikely to fulfill their potential anytime soon, and even if they do they're not affordable for long-- Skenes will probably be $20+ after arbitration before he even logs 150 career IP...
-
I always thought the 5milb was to allow rostering prospects w/out having using an Active spot more than it was to have 'more total prospects' rostered in the league as a whole(?).. Seems like the only strategy then for those of us at the bottom/no shot at competing is to price enforce these auctions just to have the option of either dropping the player on the last day of the season so that they could be available as a top pick in the MiLB Draft...
-
Appreciate the reply RE: MiLB/MLB Draft; not sure I see how a change would "move us quite a bit further from Standard Otto leagues" when the 5milb system does that already(?) If the issue is holding the MiLB Draft mid-year I'd be all for it; we're already gathered here playing- as opposed to in the mid-offseason when nothing is happening/coming out about the players we're drafting- & we'd have about 2/3's of the year to call-up/evaluate players already on our MiLB rosters..
-
Please promote Jacob Wilson from 5MiLB roster to my main roster (Love, Indubitably). Thanks!
-
The 5milb rules are actually set up so that all teams have to have a chance to roster a prospect on their Otto roster before he’s eligible To be drafted in the 5milb draft. I do agree that it isn’t ideal for draftees to be eligible to be auctioned midseason, but restricting them would move us quite a bit further from standard Otto leagues and would put a wrench in the 5milb schedule, we’d have to have the 5milb draft after the mlb draft
-
Sorry I didn’t respond sooner, taken a break from Otto for the last few days. My interpretation of the milb rules is that it is designed to ‘deepen’ the prospect pool that can be rostered, not necessarily to hold the top prospects. It allows us to more feasibly uncover/stash prospects that are too far away or too much of a long shot to be worth putting on Otto rosters.
-
Allowing these players to be auctioned before the MiLB Draft can throw a wrench into the mid-season market, when teams are more clearly established in the standings and are randomly re-auctioning previously cut players to clear salaries, and seems to go against the spirit of the MiLB Draft as a way to distribute top young talent to teams that finish toward the bottom. Any thoughts?
-
With the recent MLB Draft and Paul Skenes, who is owned for $8 in our league one year after being drafted, making headlines tonight by starting the ASG, I'm wondering if anyone else would like to see MLB Draft picks be restricted from being Auctioned until after they've been exposed to the MiLB Draft (except for rare occasions where players are called-up to the MLB after being drafted)... ?
-
I'm calling up Brooks Lee for Columbus

That would be great - please cut Blake Dunn for me. Thanks fellas, I’m on my phone so I appreciate you pulling the language.

Yes, Seth is right. So do you want me to just cut Dunn?

"...eligible for cut (with
cap penalty) or trade, plus off‐season salary increases and arbitration allocations."
-
Here's the text: "Prior to September 1st each season, 5MiLB players must be added to an owner’s standard
40‐man Ottoneu roster within 48 hours after the 5MiLB player incurs his first MLB PA (hitters) or .1 IP (pitchers). If the 5MiLB player is not cut or traded during this 48-hour window, the player
will automatically (via Commissioner) be added to the owner’s standard 40‐man roster at a
salary of $1, at which point the player becomes a standard “rostered” player..."
-
I think you can also directly cut him from your 5MiLB roster within the 48 hours window to avoid the cap penalty.
