While we're airing grievances, anyone else feel the negatives points for HRs that pitchers give up is too high? Never understood the extra punishment for HRs. Like why is it so much worse for a pitcher to give up a solo HR than if he gives up a double and then 2 ground outs? Both pitchers allowed an extra base hit & 1 run. why not just have negative points for ERA?
-
In terms of the IL, I've been reasonably lucky. Even so, BB/9 and HR/9 increases have rendered some of my guys nearby unplayable.
-
Baztones is definitely onto something regarding travel ball. I was a "self-taught" pitcher in the late 80's/early 90's, constantly experimenting with arm angle and motion (overhand, side arm, and submarine), in tandem with the highest velocity that my 14 year-old self could generate. It didn't end well, as I successfully shredded my right labrum to bits before I graduated from high school.
-
Historically, more injuries happen in first month of season. I was certainly sad to see Springs head for TJS after his amazing start to the season, but I appreciate that Ottoneu does not count 60-day IL towards roster limit, and the injuries have made for some fun auctions.
I keep getting some false sense of hope that maybe I can climb these standings, it's such a tight year. I really need to do something to break the cycle of mid-pack every year though.

I think we are all in trouble. I have 3 on 60 day / 2 on 15 day / 1 on 10 day and that's only because I dropped a few OTHER guys on the 60 day hahahahah
-
PJ……Thanks for info and correlation. Any info you can share on me getting my IL guys back would be appreciated! 😉. (Though two are on 60 IL because of TJS so they won’t be back for a while…..)

So Sky Riders as far as averages the estimate is in 1980 pitchers across the league were throwing 88-89 mph, but as far as hard facts we do know that for instance the average fastball has risen from 90.8 to 92.2 from 2008 to 2014. It’s trackable data at this point. If you do a Google search for increased fastball velocity correlation to elbow injuries you will see page after page of medical and college research. As far as age I am 57 and saw Gibson Ryan Carlton Seaver but didn’t see Koufax. 🥲
-
Few teams pitch to contact? Ah, yes……Ryan, Koufax, Gibby, Seaver, etc. all pitched to contact…..uh, wait, uh…..but those K totals? Whatever the reason, I got too many guys on the IL. Damn!

I forgot to mention the popularity of travel ball and the legions of parents who feel there has to play ball year around.
-
There’s definitely a strong correlation between higher velocities and arm injuries. It’s just a different game today and few teams pitch to contact anymore.

I must be much older than you guys. There were plenty of outstanding pitchers, who did not suffer injuries, who could throw a ball as fast as today's pitchers. Nolan Ryan was not the exception, nor was he the rule. And who says you have to throw a ball 95 miles an hour every pitch to be successful? However, the younger pitchers may be pushed too soon, and the enormous variety of pitches today is much more than “back in the day,” how each is thrown could be a factor.

I agree w much of what PJ says. The human arm is not built to exert that max effort force repeatedly, and that’s exactly what pitchers do. Science and Research has all led the “experts” or at least many of them to push players for max effort, max velocity output.
-
I have all the prospects and my team is nothing but 70 potential with 50 performances

Yeah, throwing 95+ consistently seems to be beyond human capabilities

my take is that the athletes are much more finely tuned, leaner, less body fat, much more training, specific muscle work etc. but in the case of pitchers it is obvious that velocity is way up from 70's and 80's etc. arm rebuilds are almost standard. TJS etc. more torque. yes they throw less innings but in a way that means they are pushing themselves to higher levels on ever pitch. pushing their arms and bodies.

Seriously I feel like the modern game is so demanding - these guys are pushing limits of their body and really having a hard time staying on the field. especially pitchers obviously.

It’s because they’re smarter here. :)
Because almost no starting catcher ever plays 162 games or all that close to hitting 162, they have 2 slots so you can reach the limit without stressing.

Hard to argue with Kelly's recent results, but I don't trust his stuff holding up. We will see! My pitching start decisions have been absolutely terrible this season. SP are 4.28 IP when in my lineup, and pitchers overall are 4.96 P/IP on bench (wish that split out to just starters). Anybody have a worse negative gap?

With all the people clamoring for outfielders, I'm surprised to see Wade Jr. go uncontested for $1 to Rob. Small sample size and all, but he has clearly changed his approach this year, is taking walks, keeping ball down and hitting it to opposite field, and on the strong side of a platoon with a .405 xwOBA!
