Draft day!

The end of that was meant to say: Good luck!

Alright folks, I think the best way to go about the draft is to have a three strikes policy re: missed nominations. I will enable the "require nomination" option in the draft, and this will automatically lock out a GM for missing a nomination. I can manually unlock GMs, and will do so up to three times. Some discretion will be exercised because I know life can happen at draft time or not, though it shouldn't be a very long process, and I hope y'all can put aside some time for it. Good

Yeah, maybe you don't have a strict count. If nominations are required, it doesn't seem too onerous for the commish to use his judgement to identify missed nominations as recurring and strategic. Missed nominations should be pretty infrequent if everyone is operating in good faith.
-
Have a great draft folks. I won’t be able to join you on the 4th, but thanks for doing me solid and policing the process
-
I prefer Commish pauses actually. But I don't think an owner should be able miss...not draconian...just something to keep it fair/consistent for all owners. Owners can go in draft room and set up watchlist right now if they would like. At the end of the draft as you mention, that watchlist should be used and it will help out with having a player to nominate.
-
I've had more than a few good-faith missed nominations over the years. The draft room setup is somewhat clunky, and things always move more quickly than you'd expect. Especially in the late rounds when there are only a couple teams nominating, it can be tricky to track while you're bidding. That's the challenge of the format to some extent, but to instate Dees' "miss nomination, your done" system seems a little draconian...

I'm in favor of requiring nominations. Maybe each gm is reinstated after one or two missed nominations but 3rd strike is locked out for the remainder of the draft.
-
It seems like you guys hashed this out pretty well. I agree that we should have no missed nominations (with perhaps one in case of draft issues) and the draft should go as long as it goes.
-
Once it's established everyone is okay and no issues, then begin the no missed nominations thing.
-
You might give everyone a free miss early on if they seem to be having legit computer issues. Missed nominations become an advantage later in the draft anyway. There are teams that have issues early every year. Maybe give a pardon early on. Early on owners would rather be there as most big guns come out early on.
-
Yeah, it's good to get this clarified now, and the discussion is certainly helpful. In the end I think we agree that it basically comes down to requiring nominations (if you don't nominate, you're done). That's the simplest thing.
-
I believe your right there. Simple fix is if you miss nomination, your done. I was actually in the draft room last year until draft had ended. Not sure what you saw, but on my end the draft was shown as finished. I think we actually prefer the same thing here. I just want to get it clarified beforehand. There is no unfairness for any team if you set draft as no missed/skipped allowed and draft is over after all owners have left.
-
Sure, and I had 40 minutes because we did not require nominations, so I was not penalized (locked out) for not nominating even though it continually cycling through my turn. So, either we A) require nominations which makes a deadline unnecessary, or B) we don't require nominations and me (or any GM) can wait as long until everyone is done and take as long as we want to pick up players. The latter is a legit strategy IMO, though the former seems more fair.
-
And the fact that there are 3 teams with 24-28 spots to fill will likely take care of the problem you are concerned with--that one team is left with no bidding competition.
-
That should actually be 30 seconds. You had about 40 minutes to select six players. Go back and read the old messages and it will make sense. No problem whatsoever with you drafting players last. But it must be while draft is running and within those 30 second nomination timeframe for each player drafted.
-
At the risk of belaboring the point, though I believe requiring nominations solves this potential issue, since it'll lock out a GM who doesn't nominate. I'm not actually sure if you can choose to voluntarily skip a turn as I don't see an option in the draft UI.
-
I agree with the points made by Dee. I'm sure the goal is fairness, but the drafting situation is different for different teams. Two teams have 3 and 6 spots to fill respectively, while three other teams have 24, 27, and 28 spots to fill. Closing the draft after six teams have finished would be no problem for the teams needing only 3 and 6, bur seems quite unfair to the three with the most spots to fill.
-
What I did was pick up players while the draft room was still live, so the draft was not done. All other GMs selected that they were done, and I did not. If you are the only GM left in the room, there is no "draft clock".
-
No sir! You selected your players after the draft ended. I am saying that an owner should be able to keep bidding players even if they are the last team, but continue under that 10 second nomination period while the draft is running. You selected your players after the draft ended and not under the 10 second clock. That should not be allowed. Must draft while draft is running.
-
I’m OK keeping the draft room open until the last person leaves. Everyone has equal opportunity to remain in the draft room and bid, so if one person believes there is value remaining and keeps drafting without competition, so be it. Once all players have left, the draft room should close.
-
The fair process is there for all teams to stay in the draft room and fill the roster by bidding at the auction draft. We need to stay with what Ottoneu rules actually state. See Under Section II Auction Draft e. Each owner can leave the auction at any time. Once all 12 owners have left the auction, the auction is complete. If they miss their bid turn, then they are finished and can't complain about an owner staying and finishing the roster at the draft.
-
I actually also like the strategy personally Dee. Looking back at the old messages now, you raised a contention with me doing exactly that (picking up players in the draft after all other GMs voluntarily declared they were done). I dropped my end-of-draft pickups after the discussion, and did not have access to the auctions as a result.
-
The draft room should not be closed until all owners have left. I'm not down with a deadline. If I choose to wait until the end to fill my team, I should have that option. Other teams have the same option. Should not be penalized for waiting on potential bargains. Getting bargains is a key part of this type of league format.
-
Let me put it this way to simplify things: If anyone has a compelling case against requiring nominations each turn (which solves most of draft problems and essentially makes the self-imposed deadline a non-issue) -- please let me know!
-
I think the best course of action to is to require nominations so that the draft moves briskly, though the deadline idea will stick. If all goes well, the deadline won't really come up. In any case, this is an open call to all GMs to chime in if y'all have any thoughts. Just want to make sure the draft moves well.
-
Normally someone knows early on if they are having technical difficulties. Kinda odd when someone is drafting fine until towards the end and computer issues all of the sudden start up.
-
Closing the draft room opens all players to an auction process that still allows teams to fill out their remaining spots as they like through a fair process where everyone has the same shot at the players. Without a deadline, a single team can wait until the very end of the draft, after everyone else declared they are done, to pick up players without anyone to bid against.
-
I think all should be required to nominate. Maybe one free skip. There is an advantage to skipping nomination. I don't think it should be allowed or encouraged. Keep everyone on same rule.
-
With setting a deadline to closing the draft room, that is something I determined was necessary after last season. where I picked up players after all other GMs had voluntarily left the room and declared they were done. A contention was raised that I thought was legitimate, and the solution that fit best was a deadline to end the draft.
-
Yeah the draft room isn't the best in otto, though teams can pause/skip their turn if they need a break (or if there are technical issues), so there should be reason for skipped nominations. I may actually require nominations this time around -- if you miss one, you get locked out. Still have a couple of weeks to gather some thoughts there, so if anyone else wants to chime in, feel free.
-
I do think we should pause draft and require all owners must nominate a player. Seems like every year, in at least one of my leagues, someone conveniently starts having computer issues right before their bid comes up. I prefer we set some clarification regarding missed nominations beforehand. Maybe even allow one per team, after that your out. I do recognize that Ottoneu draft room kinda sucks. Maybe with the price increase, it will be improved. We can hope.
-
Maybe I am misunderstanding something but the draft should not shut down if an owner wants to continue drafting until the roster is filled. Some owners plan as a strategy to have spots open until the end of the draft and bid accordingly. The draft should shut down either when all owners have completed, left room, or declared they are finished. See Under Section II Auction Draft e. Each owner can leave the auction at any time. Once all 12 owners have left the auction, the auction is complete.
-
This is to ensure that teams have the opportunity to fill out at least the starting roster, while making sure that the draft doesn't drag on. Please let me know if you have any questions. Lastly, good luck everyone! See y'all on draft night.
-
Also, as we ran into an issue last year re: players auctioned after most teams left the draft, it's best that we establish a clear guideline for this year. As you don't have to fill your entire roster in the draft, I will keep the room open until A) all teams have at least 24 players (this is mostly everyone already), and B) half the league (6 teams) have left. At that point, we will shut it down and all teams will be able to to pick up players via the regular FA auction.

Welcome to the league, losing Nimmo! We're all set to go owner-wise, so the draft date is set for Monday, March 4 at 9pm ET (8pm CT, 6pm PT). The draft usually takes a couple of hours so it shouldn't run too late. The backup date is Monday, March 11 at the same time (if okayed by majority). Please add the date to yr calendars -- thank you!
-
I'd prefer the Sunday nights, out of those dates, but should be able to make them all
