What are the chances we could do a normal draft on a weeknight? I would vote for that.
-
I'm on the find a date and draft normally team. Had my first draft in another league last night. No need to wait far as I'm concerned.

Did I miss something? I didn’t think the discussion of a slow draft had anything to do with working around the lockout. It was just a preference of slow draft vs regular draft, and scheduling.
-
For what it's worth, my vote is that we pick a date now (and stick to it, per Section 42's comment). There's a limited number of time slots available for each date, and the longer we wait, the more people's work/social calendars will be filled and time slots will be claimed by other leagues. Better to choose a date now to ensure it works for everyone than wait and risk someone having a conflict and not being able to attend.

As I expressed to the Commish, I don't see the purpose of a slow draft. Either we decide to set a draft date regardless of if there's a labor agreement, or we wait. If we set a date, I'd rather us not cancel it and reschedule because there still isn't an agreement before the draft. If we set a date, I'd prefer to see us keep it regardless of the lockout. The only purpose for a slow draft is if we can't agree on a date, not to 'work-around' the lockout.
-
No poll to date. I used the views on the message board plus messages to those who did not express opinions to draw those conclusions. If the league wants a formal poll, no problem.

There was a poll?

Time to decide about auction format, followed by date. I've polled the league; here's vote: 6-regular format, 4-slow format, 2-either. I'll give us a few days to discuss and re-vote, then we'll go with the majority. If no discussion after a day or so, we may just jump to dates.

Just a reminder to everyone that the deadline to make your offseason cuts and get your rosters legal is 11:59PM EST tomorrow, Feb 15th. As a reminder, no transactions are allowed afterwards until the draft concludes. Note, if a trade is accepted prior to that deadline it will still go through even if the processing time is after the deadline (but you will have to keep everyone involved through the draft). If anyone has any questions, let myself or Hell and Back know!

I can’t remember what the distinction between the two sections is, but currently there isn’t anything under “Expired” and I seem to remember all of our openings go into the “Available” section

Thank you, Redlegs! I only ask because the Claim a Team tab on the dashboard has separate sections for "Available" and "Expired" teams, but I've never understood the difference.

Jeff, as for as I understand, there is no difference in replacing owners before or after the renewal deadline. I emailed Chaos the day after the renewal date, waited 5+ days with no response, so we have a team for someone to pick up. Abandoned teams go on the appropriately named "abandoned teams" list for prospective owners to peruse. Curlin has also posted a description of the team/league on this list. If you're a part of the Slack Ottoneu community, I invite you to talk it up! T

More like what happens when you have to drive through Chicago to get to Wisconsin.

If we choose a date now, we can always change it later if Opening Day is pushed back, provided of course we give Title 42 plenty of notice.

Though I would say that's a mild preference and I am curious to try a slow draft one of these days. I just lean toward going with the system I know since I'll be sleep-deprived. But, I say that just as one vote of twelve, not as commish, so whatever the league prefers overall is fine.

Like Title 42, I also work odd hours. My schedule is set in stone for Feb and March, but it gets cloudier beyond that. So in my case, I can give you plenty of specific dates for a March draft right now if you wanted, but I can't say with any certainty what my April availability will look like (at least not yet). But I recognise I am just one voice among 12, so I will go with whatever league consensus is.

Just to answer Fair Dinkum's question, the couch managers slow draft takes place over multiple days. You don't need to be logged in and checking all the time. That's what made it so convenient for me. But I also enjoy the excitement of the live auction, so I'm up for either.
-
Just my two cents, I've found in my experience commissioning my other league that varying time zones and work/family commitments make it very difficult to find dates that work for all, even when scheduling 2 months in advance. I vote that we choose a placeholder date for late March, as close as possible to Opening Day. If the lockout persists, we can reconsider in late Feb/early March. My fear is that if we wait to choose a date, people will fill openings in their calendar with new commitments.

I would prefer a regular auction as well. The Otto draft is one of my favourite days of the year. But the lockout is obviously something we have to reckon with, so I'm open to alternatives.

I like the discussion. As commissioner, I'll bow to the consensus on dates and formats. I want to avoid the problems Title has outlined, and find times that also work for El Ocho, Fair Dinkum, and others. Let me know any other work/life situations that we can try to work around. While I've never done a slow draft, it's always a good time to learn, so no problems there.

Thanks, Redlegs. I figure I will need to add about 20 players at auction. Is it possible to do a slow draft over multiple days? If we're only auctioning a maximum of 36 players at a time and I can't start till 3 PM, it seems unlikely we would be able to wrap it up within the 24 hour time frame.
Fair Dinkum on
February 1, 2022 4:48 PM

Regarding Couch Managers, each auction takes place over the span of time, usually 24 hours. Most people have 2 or 3 nominations per owner, so there are 24 to 36 players being auctioned at a time. If there is a new high bidder, an auction can be extended by a set period of time, usually 4 to 8 hours. This prevents last minute sniping.

For reference, it's about 830 AM Wednesday for me now.

Can anyone explain how Couch Manager slow drafts work? I understand the concept, but my time zone is EST+16, so my availability starts from 3 PM EST. Anything starting earlier than that would make it difficult for me to participate.

I would be good with a couch managers slow draft. It would at least eliminate some potential scheduling issues. I did my first one last year and I liked the convenience of it. I could go either way. Also, if we did set a tentative date and people's work scheduling permits, we could reevaluate X number of days/weeks before the date and push it out; we don't have to wait until the day before.
-
Redlegs, I've been intrigued by slow drafts but would prefer a single day as close to the season as is feasible. That way we all have better information. In response to Title, until we try and identify dates and times, how would anyone know what sort of arrangements need to be made? The season is slated for March 31, so shouldn't we target the current best date for the league now? As more time passes, life will just keep happening for all of us, limiting what availability people may have.
-
We could do a slow draft on couch managers?
-
So we set a date, people keep it open (I work nights & weekends & may have take the day off as those times are better for everyone else), the season gets delayed, we cancel it, I'm out a day of income.. then what? We set a new "tentative date"? Whenever the lockout ends there'll certainly be at least 2 but prob 3-4+ weeks for teams to assemble & have a short 'spring training'. Unless you mean finding a day/time of the week when we could draft regardless of which
-
In response to Title's comment, I would suggest planning at least a tentative date so that people keep a hopeful date open. I worry that if we wait until we know when Opening Day is, we won't have enough time to find a day that will work for everyone. If the tentative date arrives and the season start still isn't known, we can always try to push back.
-
Congrats Curlin!!! I'll try to be flexible for the draft.

FWIW my preference is to NOT schedule a draft until we know when the season will actually start, if that is at all possible. Drafting ahead of a truncated season two out of the past three years in a $100 keeper league is a tough pill to swallow.
