I would agree that the rule is a little vague, but I think the intention is for every team to have a roster that enables them to fill every lineup spot with a valid player to accumulate points. With that being said, I have a couple of points.
1. It's not fair to force this into effect after the draft (since I assume they would have drafted differently), it would need to be stated as a league rule that everyone abides by going into next year's draft.
-
I agree with Domos. If that's what they want to do, then go for it.
-
I don't see a problem as log as they pay the league fee. If they feel they can put the best team on the field next year by accruing minor league talent I think that's their decision

I don't think anyone's trying to portray you as the bad guys. It's simply my opinion that this rule is clearly aimed at requiring a minimum level of competitiveness that your strategy intentionally skirts. I'll also admit there is room for interpretation and there are other Ottoneu players who share your opinion. Many of the other arguments for and against are fleshed out in the links I shared. Each owner can decide for themselves and it certainly doesn't have to be anything personal.
-
I feel as if this is being portrayed as myself and my co-owner explicitly violating a rule. This area is very gray, and I think it unfair to imply that it is not.
-
We will go with whatever the league decides however I think it's important to note that we strongly disagree with tendonomics saying it would be enforcing the rule. We believe this is interpretation and not the league okaying an explicit violation.
-
I think it's wiser to enforce the rule, but I'm happy the league is discussing and good with whatever a majority decides.
-
As commissioner, I think it is 100% up for our league to determine interpretation of the rules. Personally, I utilized the same strategy in a different league last year and it was allowed. At the same time, I was in a separate league which did not allow it. If seven people believe he needs to have 5 relief pitchers on his roster, I will enforce the rule. Please leave your thoughts on the matter - Steve
-
We take this to mean that having 10 pitchers fills out a lineup. The SP/RP designation only deals with points accrual, and 1.a says nothing about point accrual. We have 25 MLB players and can fill out a starting lineup. We don't see this as a violation, however, if the league sees differently we will adjust. Currently we are spending of $257/$331 on MLB players.
-
However, 1.e.ii states, "ii. All pitchers will have both SP and RP eligibility. However they will only accrue statistics if you use them in the same manner as their MLB team, meaning SP spots must be taken by starters and RP spots must be taken relievers."
-
1.e states, "A team's starting lineup consists of one slot at each infield position (catcher, first base, second base, third base, and shortstop), five outfielder slot, one additional middle infielder (second base or shortstop) slot, one additional hitter from any position (utility slot), five starting pitcher slots, and five relief pitcher slots."
-
We have been discussing this via message with Tendonomics for a couple of days, and we do not believe that our roster is in violation of the rules. 1.a states: Each team should maintain at all times a roster of 22 major-league players that can fill out a starting lineup. The remaining 18 roster spots can be used for reserves, consisting of both major and minor leaguers.
-
I don't have a problem with that strategy. If they want to pay $99.99 to lose this year in order to gain younger talent for 2018, that's fine with me. Just as long as they follow the rule of having 22 Major Leaguers to fill out a lineup.
-
Here is more discussion of the rule on the Ottoneu community page. From what I can tell, Usual Suspects' position is a novel one, but it might be helpful to look at the debate in considering the best approach. http://community.ottoneu.com/t/debating-rule-1a-in-ottoneu-baseball/126
-
Although I disagree with that position, it doesn't matter too much to me which way the league decides. I just wanted to raise the issue so that everyone could decide in advance how we want to approach this rule in our league. Especially since there's money on the line, it seems better to decide the issue preseason so that everyone's clear.
-
I think it's relevant for the league because we currently have a team who is only carrying one major league reliever. They can state their own position, but my understanding is that their position is that it's cool to play starting pitchers in relief slots, even if those starters cannot accrue any points because they are not currently pitching in a relief role.
-
The enforcement of this rule has largely been left up to the leagues. You can read about it here: http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/the-joy-of-ambiguous-fantasy-rules/

Hey guys, just wanted to have a discussion about Rule 1a before the season starts because I've seen it become a big issue in season in a couple of other leagues I've been in. And in the middle of the season it usually gets a lot more heated than in the pre-season. Basically this rule requires you to have 22 major leaguers sufficient to fill out a starting lineup. This is to create a balance btw requiring a team to maintain some level of competitiveness and also allowing flexibility to rebuild

Brendan Rodgers will in all likelihood move today. Seeking SP or OF + cap space. Get your offers in, or he may go pretty cheaply.
