Thanks for the advice Otto...as a "first-timer" it's extremely helpful
-
If you're not in a position to win, evaluate your guys closely now. If you have a guy that you don't believe you'll keep for next year, try and get value for them now. Remember at year end, every major leaguer gets a $2 raise, minor leaguers get $1. So for most rosters that's a $70 to $80 bump, then there's arbitration. That adds between $11 and $33 to every payroll as well. Start narrowing down who you want to build around and who you want to ditch.

And the biggest gamble of all is that the semi-final round in this league is only 1 week instead of 2. In one week, you could have a couple of rainouts change the whole matchup. Assemble a great squad and squander your future only to have them barely even participate in the playoff. There's a fine line between all in and kamikaze.

I would say if you have a shot at winning the league, go all in. I have gone all in, and traded the future for the present. Coming into today my payroll was $430. The Freeman trade will ad $5. The Betts/Urias trade adds another $55. 40 guys adds $80 at year end, and arbitration will likely add another $33 bringing my offseason total to $603. I'll have to cut $203 worth of players just to be at $0 for the draft. It's a hell of a gamble, because the future is not bright.

the salary you get back is probably meaningless unless you can spend it this year. i think otto or bats can better describe the post-season team management than i can--i forget the nuances and that is what is important
-
trade your high price players for cheap players that you can keep next year. in a perfect world you would unload all the players you dont want for cheap players you do and then build a team on that

Woah woah what is Razzball? I've been wondering what to do with these high priced players. Is it better to wait for the end of the year and just not resign them? Or release them now to get back half their salary.

sorry--he is $1 this year and $3 next--i am bad at math
-
i have a $4 bassitt--no vision problems and he is a top 20 pitcher--just horribly underrated--i could use OF. according to razzball he is worth $18 or $19--obviously i wont get that value back--he will be $6 next year--but will listen to offers
-
I'm sure I could have gotten more for Freeman but I'm quite happy with the trade. The only thing I don't love is Grisham's salary. I'll have to think on that one a bit. Besides that, the trade accomplished some of my goals for the next auction and paired with the trade deadline approaching, I pulled the trigger.
-
thought about it.....and if there was a shortage of 1b amongst the bidders......
-
Very interesting trades. Thought Freeman would bring in a bit more.

yeah, me either.......
-
Also, not trying to tank, and trying to put up a good fight in the playoffs...I just don't think I have the squad to really go up against the top two teams currently (props to you all!).
-
Yeah I'm trying to just position myself well for next season. I learned a lot this season and am trying to free up some cap space, and try to obtain some pieces that I believe will work for me next season as well. I also think I over-valued a lot of players, so pretty much trying to move any player over $35 or so. Granted, this might make it hard for me to bring on a few A-tier players if they are all kept into next season....Only time will tell for me :)
-
Is it fire sale time then? What is the strategy if we are not going to win this year but moving into next year?
-
Moose Tacos is avail........

Lindor is on the block if anyone has interest.

wow laureano.....crap
crap crap
-
sorry--that was obviously obvious.....been a long day
-
go to $1 and then release--at least its just a $1 cap penalty
-
Yeah I know you can edit your auctions that someone else started. But if you create the auction I think you're right, I'm stuck.

i do not know how--i always thought u were stuck....

Hey guys is there a way to remove an auction bid? Say you bid on a guy and he gets hurt can I remove my bid before the auction completes?

Thought this article from June was a pretty interesting way to think about it:
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/which-mlb-teams-should-be-making-midseason-deals/
But there's always randomness too in who is WS champ. In 1960, Pirates were outscored 55-27 by NYY but won the series and a glove first 2B clinched the win with a HR in one of the best WS games ever:

That’s very true he drafted Mike, pippen, grant, etc and hired Phil good point and he broke it up

Bulls wouldn't have had that dynasty without Krause.

I thought I was bad at fantasy basball then I watched and studied the moves of Jerry Dipoto with the Mariners and now I think i'm not that bad. Wow what a terrible egomaniac destroyer
reminds me of Jerry Krause
-
Leave it to the Mariners to make a deal while in the playoff hunt that not a sinle fantasy owner in the world would make. Commitment to Mediocrity!
-
wowser--Soler finally coming around--has alot of ground to make up
-
jensen is on the block if there is any interest. I understand the clouds and the problems. if he keeps his role could be a nice buy low. obviously the price isn't high. older/tired SPs on the "buy low" are acceptable fodder.
-
Glad people are enjoying this format and league! Official decision is NO scoring changes for next season. Only thing that I would be open to changing is the playoff format. Again, only with a unanimous vote to change.
-
This is my first category based league and I'm a big fan so far.. still learning the ropes but its fun

Cool, I was only going to change it only with a strong league-wide sentiment to do so. Based on slack + this, I think we will stay the course :)
-
TBH i didnt draft based on pts, so i am not for it
-
Hey all. I wanted to get the conversation going before the trade deadline since it might impact strategy. How do we all feel about moving to a points-based scoring system NEXT season?
-
best of luck to all for an injury free H2!
-
Yes indeed couple days to look at my squad bbq and make decisions. Really like doing the league with you guys
-
Happy halfway break everyone! Enjoy some time off and let's get ready for what will hopefully be an exciting second half!
-
halt & catch fiers--good luck w/soler i struggled with holding him--now i know he will club homers in h2
-
I’m looking to trade dirty boy Bauer. Let me know if interested?

Wander Samuel Franco. Rostered

Wander Franco? Is he listed?
-
Roselle--if you have no innings pitched there is no change to your stats--W, SV, K, WHIP or ERA
w/out any innings pitched then nothing happens--others can move above or below you (bad ERA/WHIP) and you can ground and would lose ground on counting stats......
-
I need some clarification on scoring. Say i don't have any pitchers going today. Do i receive a 0 ERA and 0 WHIP for the day? Which in turn would be number 1 in that category? I just don't understand this category scoring.
