You can read about it here under "Maximizing Salary Cap Space":

Not sure if this helps or not, but I thought I'd throw this strategy out there for any other fellow Ottonoob's who don't know because it's not super obvious (and kind of related). In this case, if you are just trying to get rid of Severino and get back some cap relief, you can cut him, get back $13, then if he is still out there in 30 days you can put him up for auction. If nobody snags him, you then own him again for $13. Cut him. Voila you whittled that $13 in half to $7 (it rounds up)
-
Hi guys. Sorry late response been busy at work. I have asked Streakers to cancel the trade so we can do this correctly.

Understood, just have to agree to disagree on this one. I'm with Arthurian, think vetoes should only be used for collusion, got no problems with unbalanced trades. Also very much agree it's great folks are clarifying rules and having these discussions, just don't see the need for the league to step in here.
-
My concern is that we would all like to assume that an owner looking to trade a valuable asset (again, perhaps long-term in this case) would explore options before landing on the decision to cut the player or essentially give them away for less than that. And yes, perhaps forcing one team to take Severino on at a higher price than the market would bear can be viewed by some as a "return". I just think it is a very difficult to justify trade that provides little to negative value for on

For the record, I think vetoes should be for clear collusion only. I'm just glad to be a league where a discussion like this can take place! My one I joined last year has 1 trade a year and usually it's not very intereactive!
-
Appreciate it, and like I said I'm totally with you that it doesn't make much sense for Streakers. Just don't think there's some sort of dangerous precedent for the non-involved managers to be worried about here, and wanted to point out depending on your opinion about Severino's health this season and his future outlook, this could be preferable to him getting straight up cut. But this is a democracy, so veto away!
-
Just wanted to make sure everyone is on the same page. :)
-
No, but I wasn't sure since you said $13.
-
Yes I know the rules, and I would expect him to clear waivers, and then go in an auction for something considerably less than $26. Do you disagree?
-
He goes into waivers for 24 hours. To claim him would be full $26. Once he goes through, he is "$13" but that's just a starting auction price. He can be bid up to whatever people think his value should be. (again, I'm fine trade or no trade...just saying)
-
You're worried about Severino getting given away for nothing in return, but saying he should be cut instead. To Danimal's earlier point, I think we are overlooking the fact he is still on a $26 salary. $13 would be a great bargain, one I wouldn't want anyone else to have. Keeping him on this salary is worth something - maybe not $10 in cap space, but you can't say it is "nothing". As you have said, this is a dynasty league. Just my two cents though, sounds like I'm in the minority, so
-
I don't even intend to veto necessarily. I just figured something seemed off (in this case, a pretty clear simple misunderstanding of the rules).
-
It was definitely a mistake on my part. My bad for not understanding the rules. If Diamond Girl is okay with me revoking it, I will. Otherwise, it's up to the league to veto. I'm the idiot, so I'll suffer the consequences. In order for the league veto to work, there need to be 7 votes to veto.
-
This is not about wanting Severino. It is about not wanting to approve a trade where a top 10 pitcher (when healthy, admittedly) is given away for nothing in return - even less than they are likely to receive by dropping the player. It's a dangerous precedent, and worth of a veto IMO.

So I agree with everyone that the trade doesn't make much sense for Streakers, but I've got to ask, why are we complaining? Diamond Girl is getting a hobbled Severino for $26, Streakers is getting less cap space than he would otherwise. I'd prefer that to Streakers getting the full cap space and someone getting a $13 Severino. I guess the people complaining might want the $13 Severino for themselves, but that isn't a good reason to veto a trade IMO.
-
This is my first ottoneu league, but I'm pretty sure that's the summary.
-
Dang! That sounds way better! So the only risk I have is if no one claims him for the remainder of the season. . . then I'll never get more than the $13.
-
Relevant text from rules: "f. If a player passes through waivers, 50% of his salary, rounding up, counts against his previous team's salary cap as a cap penalty, until he is claimed by another team"
-
Correct
The deGrims on

-
Okay, so I cut Severino and get the $13 penalty. He goes through waivers, no one claims him. Then someone starts an auction for him and gets him for $15 (let's say). Once that other team picks him up off free agency my penalty is gone?
-
I'd be shocked if anyone ends up with him at $13. haha. But maybe!
-
Yeah. You automatically get $13. You get the other $13 (penalty clears) the second he's put up for auction, right? So I mean it's just giving away money and a player. As for Severino for $13, that's a possibility, but if no one bids higher, then I guess that's his accurate value, right?
-
If Severino gets claimed during waivers, or if someone starts a new bidding process after he clears waivers, you would have no penalty for cutting him. There is no point in giving him away unless you are going to gain cap space above his current value. And even then, it's questionable.

If someone picks up his half salary after waivers, your cap penalty clears as well.
Diamond Girl on

-
Alright, so I'm confused. If I cut Severino, I get a $13 penalty for the rest of the year (unless someone picks up his full salary during waivers), correct?
-
It's worth pointing out that this trade ensures that Severino's salary remains at $26, rather than potentially giving someone Severino at $13, which is a huge bargain.

To be clear, my comment was a response to 7th inning streakers, not to you Arthurian. We are in agreement on this, I think. In any case, I have vetoed this trade (which I very rarely do).

Not true. This is a dynasty league, so it is essentially a given that some other team would have put in a claim, or started a new bidding process once he cleared waivers. In other words, you would have received $26 in cap space for cutting him vs. $16 for essentially handing him to another team. And regardless, the point is if you had shopped around for a better offer you could received cap space and at least one player of value in return. As it is, this just looks and smells like collusion.

Well my point was the opposite. You're gaining $3 in the 24 hour short term. But you're going to get full $27 relief within a day. There's no way he doesn't get reauctioned for $13 (that's if no one outright claims him in the 24 hours). So why give him away to one team for (essentially) nothing instead of putting him into the pool for a fair fight sort of thing.
-
I get it looks like I'm not getting anything in return for Severino, but Arthurian is exactly right. I get more for Severino if I trade him like this than if I just cut him.
-
Yes, that's exactly what I did! I offered the same trade to people who had money to spare. I wasn't sure anyone would take it so I was willing to give it to whoever accepted first. Once I sent the trade, I sent a message to let you know it was out there. I guess I could have added that I was giving the same offer to others and that it was first come first serve. Sorry about that part.
-
I thought it was a little confusing that the trade was offered up to me (maybe the trade was offered up league wide?) and then ten minutes later the same trade was accepted by Diamond Girl. Was this a first come first served kind of thing?
-
Certainly stands out. I mean this trade gets $16 in cap relief. Straight cutting him gets $13 right away and almost certainly the other $13 quickly.
-
So, there aren’t many trades that warrant a veto in my opinion, but Luis Severino for nothing in return is definitely one of them.

I have been a Marquez fan since last year and good to see a W for the Rockies along with the fact that he made my grand-daughters first baseball game even more memorable.

Remember this moment all. It's the first time I haven't been in 12th all season. By the time you read this, I may be back there. But for now...11th baby!

Danimal I am reviewing this trade proposal to make sure I did it correctly. I want $6 and because you only have $3 I was willing to do a $3 loan for you. Commish is telling me I screwed it up.

I wondered about that myself and my brother-in-law pointed me to the Otto rules for some clarity: "x. The lineups page and roster organizer for non-head-to-head leagues allows for 2 catchers for platooning purposes; Ottoneu is not a 2-catcher game."

Only 162 Games allowed for Catcher Slot? We have two slots, one is useless.
