My team is getting absolutely shredded by lineup decisions. Guys like Marwin Gonzalez and Jesus Aguilar being held out all the time is brutal.
-
Ivan's just mad that I'm beating him by believing relievers can be good. :P
In all seriousness, I noticed the same issue. I feel that the only necessary fix is to increase the innings cap beyond 1500. You can maybe get 4-500 reliever innings if you're really crafty about it, and that's a high enough percentage that you'd be nuts to actually use your 5 starters at every opportunity. If they made it 1700 innings, you would need to put in starters more and then the comparison would matter less.
-
Green numbers = guy's lineup spot in today's game. Re: relievers -- they should just leverage-weight their K/BB/HBP/HR. It's a better solution and I do think they should be downscaled. I like that a lot of this format reflects player value but reliever value is super-skewed relative to real life. The lack of park effects is also kind of exploitable, i.e., certain pitchers are just better and certain hitters are just worse.
-
I'm liking Ottoneu so far, but I may be weird that I'm really looking forward to the dynasty portion that will happen later this year. The roster management during the year is meh compared to playing GM. I'm hoping to making a run for 1st place if/when my team gets fully healthy. I do have one random question - what is with the green numbers before a players name? Is that some type of rating for that day's game?
-
Like there probably needs to be a way to make sure that guys like Josh Hader and Craig Stammen aren't so close to each other points-wise, which might be the case if saves and holds weren't credited. There still needs to be a way to properly value relievers in line with how they actually impact games while still having a way to separate the best relievers from the middle of the pack. Generally, the best relievers are the ones getting save and hold opportunities.
-
My guess is that they needed a way to kind of balance out the SP vs. RP scoring to some degree. Without saves and holds, the best relievers would probably only be worth like 300-400 points, which may kind of understate their importance. So I think the saves/holds thing was more a means to an end rather than an effort to say "These things actually matter." SPs rack up points mainly by staying in the game and not giving up dingers. So there had to be a way for RPs to pick up the slack.
-
Regarding RP scoring; so a RP can score points with a Save or a Hold, but if he comes in and is attributed a Win (instead of a Hold, for example) then that player gets kind of shafted on the extra categorical points since Wins don't get points. I'm not advocating for "Wins should net points", but if you're going to throw Wins out the window then shouldn't they throw Saves and Holds out with it?
-
But yeah, homers can definitely make or break a given day. The other league I'm in is the Fangraphs Points format, which tends to have slightly higher scoring, which makes homers a liiiiiittle less important. In this format, a pitcher can have a beautiful line but give up one homer and it turns a good start into a meh start.
-
I tried to tell you guys that relievers are generally undervalued in Ottoneu! I made the mistake in my other league of just tossing them to the side, so I kinda went wild with relievers in this league and holy moly are they good.
-
My main thoughts are: 1) I seriously misjudged how much homers matter to the exclusion of other things. Daily scores kind of just feel like who did/didn't homer or allow them. 2) I think reliever scoring is kinda weird. It seems like a good strategy is to identify good relievers and not start so many starters, but identifying good relievers is really tough so it makes the pitching side feel kind of random. (It would be better if the starters and relievers had their own innings caps.)
-
So how's everyone feeling about Ottoneu a couple weeks in? Like it? Dislike it? Want to like it but injuries suck? Questions?
-
I've had 6 guys on the IL all season, 7 currently. One of them might not play again this season despite being healthy when I drafted him for a bunch of money. I feel like I'm still in a good position, though.
-
No kidding, my team name in my other league is DL All Stars, which I changed it to about 3 years ago and it has unfortunately remained accurate the entire time since. I guess I should change it to IL instead of DL at some point...
-
I'm going to rename my team to the "IL All Stars" :(

Especially for pitchers. Homers absolutely murder what might otherwise be a pretty good outing.

Next year I'm making a model that values HR/FB suppression for this because holy lawd the HR/FB variance driving point totals is ridiculous

Yeah, it's a rough guideline. I reckon the onus is on us to have a thorough enough understanding of the pitching dynamics at play in order to make the best decisions. It makes those spot starter/longer relievers a bit of a riskier play if you aren't on top of daily news which is tough to do. I reckon "openers" are treated as starters and their partner "true starter" as relievers... I'm not sure though. Wouldn't it be easier to just have a general "Pitcher" category?
-
Oh you are very correct. Interesting that they even have the SP/RP designation for players then
-
I think you are able to slot any pitcher into either category regardless of what their listed SP/RP designation is. So technically you could have started him as RP.
-
So because Quintana came out of the bullpen for the Cubs and he only has SP eligibility in Ottoneu, there's no way I could've earned points for him today right?
-
Well, I'm going to fail miserably at that then. Would've been nice if Snell didn't decide to turn into garbage today.
-
Also just to give you guys an idea, a "good" Ottoneu day tends to be something right around 100 points. At least when there's a full slate of games.
-
Have to say, I don't think any amount of choosing bad players could account for 5 HRs given up in 13 innings. Definitely could not have managed that if I tried.
-
Also in case anyone hadn't figured it out yet (because it's kinda weird), to see how your current players are doing, click on 'today's stats' at the top left of the dashboard.

I've found that the check marks do a pretty damn good job. If they don't have a check or an X next to their name yet, it's because the lineups haven't been publicly shared yet. I used to go back and forth between the dailypress.com lineups and Ottoneu, and Ottoneu updates them really fast.
-
Is there a good website I'm not aware of that posts full lineups in a consumable one-screen format? Realizing I'm scrambling to confirm that the guys I want are, in fact, playing. Or does the Ottoneu system do a pretty good job confirming this with its checkmarks?

Choo typically sits against lefties, and the Cards have been somewhat hesitant to give Martinez tons of playing time because he sucks at defense, and now they have Goldy manning 1B. I had him last season in my other Ottoneu league and was always infuriated by how little they got his bat in the lineup. They played him more once Matheny left, so hopefully for you that carries over to this season.
-
Ouch. Choo and Martinez are also out of their lineups? What is going on?

With Lowrie out and LeMahieu not in the lineup (for Tulo...) I have no 2B for Opening Day. :(

Losing Severino really hurts me! Hopefully that's the worst injury blow I'll sustain. Good luck all and GO BRAVES!!!
-
Agreed! Best of luck all! I'm over the injury bug too. Got hit with 4 this week. Also, who in their right mind sends down Winkler!? Come on AA!
-
I got hit hard with injuries before the season. Hopefully we got it all out of our system now. I have a deep roster, but sustaining 10 injuries at once would be a bit much.
-
It's almost here, guys! Best of luck to everyone this season!

And I can confirm that Ottoneu basically shuts your team down when you're illegal. For the ten minutes or so that I was in an illegal state I played around seeing what the site would or wouldn't let me do. It basically just forces you to stay on your roster page with a giant banner telling you that you dun goofed and to fix it. You can't even access your line up page.
-
I knew when I put McMahon up for auction that if I won him it would put me over the limit; but I had a contingency plan to drop Seager if I got him for more than $1; If I had got him for $1 I could have dropped any of my $1 players to get back to legal.
-
Without looking through all the transactions, I'd assume they won some auctions and just haven't checked since then. If you have an illegal roster, Ottoneu basically won't let you do anything until you fix it. So I'm sure it'll be sorted soon enough.
-
They basically just can't earn any points until they resolve it, which probably doesn't make a huge difference for now unless they have a bunch of A's/Mariners players they want to use. Looks like each of them just need to cut a player to get their rosters to a "legal" state. I imagine that will happen before the season *actually* gets going.
-
You know, so many injuries have happened, I'm barely capable of fielding a full team.
-
When are these hooligans going to get smacked down for fielding illegal rosters?

All good with me, Venmo works great
-
I'm good with holding funds, let's try to get an idea of head count. Figure Venmo would be easiest.

I'll be one of those that won't want to join in. Having come on board post draft and picking a large chunk of my team off of waivers I'm not interested in throwing money in this time around.
-
I'm good with a little extra skin in the game as well. Just let me know when and where to send.
-
I'm good with that as well. I know there are probably a few that won't want to do it, but we may be able to get some sort of side pot cooking at least.
